Indonesia (インドネシア Indoneshia) is a supporting character in the series Hetalia.

Appearance
Indonesia is depicted as a young man with brown hair styled with a messy side-part, and bright eyes (appearing yellow). He is first depicted wearing a POLRI uniform (without any insignia) adorned with an anggrek bulan (moon orchid, a national flower of Indonesia), and white gloves.[2] Later appearances show him wearing a darker color glove.[3] In addition, he has been shown wearing a casual outfit consisting of a black tank top, olive green capri pants, and sunglasses.[4]
Personality and Interests
Indonesia is described in his profile as laid-back and friendly, but also bashful in odd ways.[3] In his debut, he's shown comfortably taking part in a more casual approach to meetings,[5] but expresses reluctance to take part in a group selfie[6] and comes across very stiff when he's asked to give the opening address at a meeting, claiming to be bad at formal speeches. Despite this, he's said to respond to bad situations with a "tidak apa-apa" (Indonesian phrase meaning "no worries" or "don't worry about it") attitude. In modern times he's experienced rapid economic growth which has attracted attention, which he credits to "rewarding yourself". However, it's revealed that while he spent money on a new motorbike, he still uses a smartphone with a cracked screen because it still works otherwise. His profile states that he likes to start a conversation with "Where are you going?"[3]
Additional character notes reveal that he has a sweet tooth, notable even among the other Southeast Asian countries who also love sweets. He also thinks dark places are spooky and scary.[3]

Following color illustrations published in the Comic Market 45th Anniversary Book[7][8] and posted to Twitter[4], he made his formal debut in the three hundred and seventy-first serialized chapter of World☆Stars, and was identified as Indonesia two chapters later. He voices his agreement to Philippines' assertion that the style of the ASEAN meetings aren't suited to the Southeast Asian lifestyle, and appears at the next meeting in casual clothing and lying on a patio lounge chair.[5] In the following chapters he reluctantly takes part in Philippines' group selfie,[6] and is asked by Thailand to give the opening address of the meeting. He's encouraged to share the secret of his economic growth, only to reveal that he's still using a phone with a cracked screen. While Philippines insisted to buy a new phone instead, he insisted that it is still usable so he would rather just wait and buy for a newer model.[3] He pointed out that Philippines just wanted to take selfies when he answered Thailand's question and also covered Philippines' mouth when he revealed Thailand's real image, which displeased him. [9] When Vietnam pointed out their issue of counter-productiveness, he shared that they just act like they're hanging at someone's house. When the traffic issue is raised, he shared that it's all only based on luck.[10] When Italy guested at their meeting, he asked about the most important thing in building a tourist attraction, in which Italy answered "inheritance from Grandpa (Rome)".[11] When the meeting concluded, he said that he would love to participate in an opportunity like this (casual meeting) again (Singapore then revealed that he is the one who enjoyed on the sweets among all of them).[12]

- In response to a fan's 2011 question about recent new characters, Himaruya stated that Indonesia was among the most widely requested characters.[13]
- In November of 2010, Himaruya uploaded to his blog drawings that many people initially mistook to be preliminary sketches of characters for Portugal, Luxembourg, Indonesia, and Malaysia; however, it was soon specified that these were merely sketches based on people he had met from these countries. Nonetheless, Himaruya commented again that Indonesia was very frequently requested as a character, and that Indonesia's image "felt strong at its core".[14]
- The character first appeared as part of Shimaoka Kenkoh Land's illustration for the Comic Market 45th Anniversary Book, though his appearance was censored in advertisements posted to Twitter.[8] In April 2021, a color illustration featuring the character was posted to Himaruya's Twitter, alongside an announcement that the character would make his formal debut in the three hundred and seventy-first serialized chapter of Hetalia: World☆Stars.[4]
