This is a list of the characters who appear in the series Hetalia, created by Hidekaz Himaruya. This list uses subregions designated by the United Nations statistical divisions.

Main Characters

Axis Powers

Flag of Italy.png Italy (イタリア Itaria?)
Voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in Japanese and Todd Haberkorn in English. As a child he is voiced by Aki Kanada in Japanese and Brina Palencia in English.

The title character of the series. He is an energetic and friendly yet clumsy young man, who also happens to be rather cowardly and obsessed with pasta. He is the grandson of Ancient Rome who was once the strongest nation in the world, as well the younger brother of Romano (South Italy). When in trouble, he often cries for Germany's help or insists on surrendering. Though he is bad at fighting, his creativity in art and trade is strong, and he is also a very good cook. The strange hair curl on the left side of his head acts as an erogenous zone for him when pulled.

Flag of Germany.png Germany (ドイツ Doitsu?)
Voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto in Japanese and Patrick Seitz in English.

A strict and rule-abiding soldier type, Germany was the one to discover Italy hiding in the crate of tomatoes in the middle of WWI (originally oranges in the webcomic version) when they were enemies. He later became allies with Italy, the two growing closer despite their differences. Due to his tendency to over-rely on manuals for orderliness, he finds himself running into trouble whenever there's a misunderstanding. He has a secret passion for baking cake and making sweets and is also suggested to be a closet pervert.

Flag of Japan.png Japan (日本 Nihon, Nippon?)
Voiced by Hiroki Takahashi in Japanese and Christopher Bevins in English. As a child he is voiced by Ai Iwamura in Japanese and Alexis Tipton in English.

The third and final major member of the Axis Powers, recruited by Germany. He is mysterious and quiet, as well as hard-working. Though he looks to be the youngest of the main three, he is in fact the oldest and acts accordingly with the behavior of an old man. He answers "No" in ambiguous and indirect ways, and he is rarely shown to be volatile in the series, though it is said that if enough pressure builds up, he can become very "scary" in his rage. His hobby is to read the atmosphere, assess situations, and act carefully. He has a weakness for 2D erotica and geek culture, as well as small animals.

Allied Powers

Flag of the United States.png America (アメリカ Amerika?)
Voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in Japanese and Eric Vale in English. As a child he is voiced by Ai Iwamura in Japanese and Luci Christian in English.

A loud, energetic type of man who occasionally intrudes upon other people's business. He is obsessed with superheroes and hamburgers, and thinks nothing of eating strangely-colored candies and cakes (which disturbs Japan). He has a strange phobia of ghosts, but is friends with an alien, Tony, who lives with him. He is the youngest of the Allied Forces in human and nation age, and their self-declared leader in the WWII strips that make up the main storyline. The strange crescent-shaped lock of hair on his head represents Nantucket, while his glasses are Texas.

Flag of the United Kingdom.png United Kingdom / England (イギリス Igirisu?)
Voiced by Noriaki Sugiyama in Japanese and Scott Freeman, Taliesin Jaffe, and Steven Kelly in English.

The cynical, foul-mouthed, estranged mentor figure to America. He used to be a pirate before he settled down into his "gentleman" role. His most noticeable physical features are his thick eyebrows. England is also well-versed in black magic and can see mythical creatures that others can't, which causes the other nations to think of them as his hallucinations. He has a bad relationship with France, which has stemmed as far back as their childhood years.

Though he is technically the United Kingdom (as evidenced by his flag), he is often referred to as simply England in most translations (though merchandise refers to him as UK, due to the Japanese word Igirisu being used for both terms). Himaruya has confirmed that he represents both the UK and England, he is officially known as the UK to other nations, with the exception of his brothers (identified as Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).

Flag of France.png France (フランス Furansu?)
Voiced by Masaya Onosaka in Japanese and J. Michael Tatum in English.

Proud and dangerously affectionate, France has been involved in a strong rivalry with England for the longest time. He can often be seen making inappropriate advances on others or streaking, and is said to fall in love with anything that is beautiful, even if it is not human. France is very proud of his art and culture, to the point where he is stubborn to learn languages other than his own. He considers himself to be a "big brother", and grew his beard to look more like one.

Flag of Russia.png Russia (ロシア Roshia?)
Voiced by Yasuhiro Takato in Japanese and Jerry Jewell in English.

A large, intimidating nation with a simplistic and easygoing personality, yet has the cruelty of a child deep down. Russia has mentally cracked from his history of war and bloodshed, however, he is unaware of his own aforementioned cruel tendencies. His greatest dream is apparently to eventually live in a warm place with sunflowers. During WWII, he had many other nations living under him as the Soviet Union, including the Baltics and his two sisters. He considers vodka to be his fuel, and is almost always shown wearing the scarf that his older sister Ukraine gave him.

Flag of the People's Republic of China.png China (中国 Chūgoku?)
Voiced by Yuki Kaida in Japanese and Clarine Harp in English.

A young-looking hermit that is one of the oldest apparent nations in the series (out of the main cast), and the self-proclaimed eldest "brother" to the other Asian characters, though Japan does not think of him as one in turn. He has an easy-going demeanor, and has a fondness for food and cute things, though the characters he creates are often bootlegged versions of other countries' ones (such as Hello Kitty and Disney mascots). It also appears that China is very wary of Russia.

In the original Japanese version, he has a tendency to end his sentences with the "-aru" suffix, a trait that Japanese people tend to stereotypically associate with Chinese accents.

Europe

Western Europe

Flag of Austria.png Austria (オーストリア Osutoria?)
Voiced by Akira Sasanuma in Japanese and Chuck Huber in English. As a child he is voiced by Aki Kanada in Japanese.

A young master who loves the piano. He was born to fight, yet was too weak as a child and often had to be assisted in battles by his friend Switzerland, until they had a falling-out. Despite his high class appearance, he is very frugal. His history was marked by many marriages, including one to Hungary (referencing the Austro-Hungarian Compromise) and one to Spain (referencing the union of the countries in the House of Habsburg). He helped raise the younger Italy when he became property of the Holy Roman Empire.

Flag of Belgium (civil).png Belgium (ベルギー Berugī?)
Voiced by Eriko Nakamura in Japanese and Amanda Doskocil in English.

A young woman who found success early in life, and for a time was ruled by Spain. Despite this, she maintained a positive attitude, and is occasionally shown helping Spain raise Romano after he becomes his property. After a falling out with her brother, they attempted to reconcile by joining together as the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but but their differences were too great and she decided to declare her independence from him. In the present day she appears to remain good friends with both Netherlands and Spain.

Flag of Liechtenstein.png Liechtenstein (リヒテンシュタイン Rihitenshutain?)
Voiced by Rie Kugimiya in Japanese and Cherami Leigh in English.

The adoptive younger sister of Switzerland, who once lived a difficult life after WWI ended and she was left in a crisis. She is incredibly grateful to Switzerland and often dresses like him to show her appreciation. Due to being mistaken as a boy by a civilian, she wears a purple ribbon in her hair. As she has no army of her own, she relies on her older brother to take care of those affairs, though he attempts to teach her how to defend herself.

Flag of Luxembourg.png Luxembourg (ルクセンブルク Rukusenburuku?)
Voiced by Taku Yashiro in Japanese.

The younger brother of Netherlands and Belgium who exudes elegance. He has a friendly personality, and speaks in a very polite and proper manner. He is an extremely busy person, sometimes to the point where he has to forgo social events to attend business matters. Despite this, he is shown to be close to his siblings, and once used his business connections to scare Belgium on Halloween. He owns a large dog named Pelutze due to his country's abundance of films with dogs in them.

Flag of Monaco.png Monaco (モナコ Monako?)
Voiced by Yōko Hikasa in Japanese and Colleen Clinkenbeard in English.

A small principality with close ties to France who speaks like an old man. A young honor student fond of ballet, she is quite social despite her serious appearance, and possesses a great intelligence that has protected her country for ages. She is also known for her casino, and is shown to be good at playing poker. She relies on France for diplomatic, military, and various other affairs, but dislikes it when he pats her on the head.

Flag of the Netherlands.png Netherlands (オランダ Oranda?)
Voiced by Nobuya Mine in Japanese and Michael Sinterniklaas in English. As a child he is voiced by Arisa Nishiguchi in Japanese.

The older brother of Belgium who grew up with little wealth. After seeing the way his sister lived, he becomes stingy with money and focuses on business. He came under the control of Spain, and the relationship between the two of them was difficult until he ultimately left and declared his independence. His trade and conquests are mentioned in passing throughout the series - from Finland and Sweden being driven from their settlement in North America to convincing Japan to open up his country to foreign traders.

Civil Ensign of Switzerland (Pantone).png Switzerland (スイス Suisu?)
Voiced by Romi Park in Japanese and John Burgmeier in English.

A xenophobic and reclusive former mercenary who is overprotective of his Alps, and has depended on his banking system in order to thrive. He is described as the "eternal neutral" country and is trigger-happy, shooting at those who'd dare cross his lawns. He adopted Liechtenstein after WWI when she fell into poverty, and acts as her older brother. But he is also reminded of his lapsed friendship with Austria when around her, a period which he does not like to be reminded of.

Northern Europe

Flag of Denmark.png Denmark (デンマーク Denmāku?)
Voiced by Hiroshi Shimozaki in Japanese and Montgomery Sutton and Greg Ayres in English.

A powerful Nordic nation calling himself the "King of Scandinavia", he once had control over the other Nordics. After Sweden and Finland left his power began to wane, and he had several unsuccessful confrontations with Sweden afterwards. He considers himself to be very close to Norway, though the other feels differently. His general attitude is that of a loud, somewhat oblivious and arrogant young man that drinks heavily. In the present day, he appears to have good relations with the other Nordics, but wants a closer relationship with Germany.

Flag of Estonia alt.png Estonia (エストニア Esutonia?)
Voiced by Atsushi Kousaka in Japanese and Mike McFarland in English.

The studious one of the three Baltic states, who is really into computers and allegedly has the most luck in avoiding Russia and problems due to his wit (though this conflicts with Estonia's actual unlucky history). When something dangerous or unfortunate happens to Latvia, he can usually be heard screaming his name. He is best friends with Finland, but is frightened by Sweden, whom he spent time under the rule of. Later in the series he is shown to own several unusual pets.

Flag of Finland.png Finland (フィンランド Finrando?)
Voiced by Takahiro Mizushima in Japanese and Clint Bickham in English.

A member of the Axis Powers who shows discomfort at some of the tactics implemented by Germany's boss. He has been ruled over by several countries including Denmark, Sweden, and Russia, and it is said that he suffered the most hardships in his life. He usually is depicted as cheery and mild, but it is said that when confronted with the scene of a battle or fire, his brute strength can show. Estonia is his best friend, due to their similarities and love for planning festivals, and he maintains a close relationship with Sweden, despite being occasionally frightened by him.

Flag of Iceland.png Iceland (アイスランド Aisurando?)
Voiced by Ayumu Asakura in Japanese and Jason Liebrecht in English.

The youngest of the Nordics, he is a mysterious boy with a cool exterior, though it is said that he is hot-blooded and passionate deep down. While he originally believed he had native inhabitants, he discovers that the first settlers were from Norway. As a result he is related to him, though he refuses to acknowledge him as his brother out of pride. Flag of Latvia.png Latvia (ラトビア Ratobia?)
Voiced by Kokoro Tanaka in Japanese and Ryan Reynolds in English.

The smallest of the Baltic states, and the most sensitive. Though he wishes he had siblings, the other two do not think of themselves as his brothers. He is easily intimidated by Russia, but lacks tact and often finds himself insulting him without realizing it. His short height is said to be due to Russia pushing down on his head, and despite his youthful appearance he drinks a lot of alcohol. In the modern day strips, he is friends with Sealand and attempts to act as an "older brother" figure to him, but finds it difficult due to his own insecurities.

Flag of Lithuania.png Lithuania (リトアニア Ritoania?)
Voiced by Ken Takeuchi in Japanese and Josh Grelle in English.

The oldest of the three Baltic states and a shy, gentle type. He was once the partner of Poland during their days as a superpower, but were split apart when Russia partitioned him. In the main storyline, he is shown as an underling of Russia as part of the Soviet Union. After breaking off, he finds work at America's house and the two got along well. Flag of Norway.png Norway (ノルウェー Norūē?)
Voiced by Masami Iwasaki in Japanese and Alex Organ in English.

A mysterious and reclusive Nation, often seen with a nisse and described as being able to see other mythical creatures. He has a distinct lack of facial expressions and outward emotion, and he is both shown as painfully shy around strangers and talkative, with Iceland's Puffin calling him a "snarky guy." After an excavation (or "DNA Test"), it was revealed that Norway and Iceland were actually brothers.

Flag of Sweden.png Sweden (スウェーデン Suweiden?)
Voiced by Keikou Sakai in Japanese and Robert McCollum in English.

A tall, silent nation who appears to be intimidating and difficult to understand, but is actually very playful deep down. After leaving Denmark, he considered Finland to be his "wife", though the other denied having such a connection. He had partial custody of Estonia and Latvia in the past as his sort of "sons" (referencing Sweden's rule of Swedish Livonia), but eventually lost both them and Finland to Russia. He has had an antagonistic relationship with Denmark over the years, and raged several wars in Northern Europe, but has since become neutral in military matters.

He is exceptionally skilled with delicate objects and enjoys making silver art and carving reliefs, using fancy and cute motifs in his art. Like Rome and Germania, he has several grandchildren and adopted children.
