Hetalia: The Beautiful World, based on the webmanga Hetalia: Axis Powers by Hidekaz Himaruya, premiered on January 25, 2013 for mobile phones and animate.TV and premiered on January 28, 2013 for streaming on NicoNico Douga.[2] It is also the fifth season overall of the anime series Hetalia. It follows the adventures of anthropomorphic countries as they live through historical events and interact with focus on differences in culture and positive and negative Japanese stereotypes of other countries.
Unlike previous seasons, the majority of the episodes adapted one chapter or story from the original source material rather than spreading them out over a number of episodes. Multi-episode storylines include a Gakuen Hetalia-set story with the Newspaper Club profiling the school's clubs for an article, the nations gathering to watch and compare the horror movies created by each country, and a misunderstanding snowballing into a date between Italy and Germany.
Four DVD Volumes containing episodes from the fifth season were released in Japan between April 24, 2013 and October 30, 2013. Each volume contained five of the originally broadcast episodes along with an additional unstreamed episode, and were originally released as limited edition packages containing a special CD with two alternate versions of the Mawaru Chikyuu Rondo theme song sung by a different character.[3] An additional unstreamed episode was included in the The Beautiful World Fandisc which was released in Japan on February 26, 2014.[4] The entire fifth season was released in one box set on July 26, 2017.[5]
In the United States and Canada, Funimation Entertainment announced on January 18, 2013 that they had secured the streaming rights to The Beautiful World and would begin to simulcast the series towards the end of the month.[6] On December 14, 2013, Funimation announced that they acquired the Home video rights for the series, and released the complete fifth season on July 22, 2014.[7] This release was distributed by Madman Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand.[8]
