Sweden (スウェーデン Suweiden) is a supporting character in the series Hetalia: Axis Powers. In 2008, Himaruya gave human names to some of the characters and he received the name Berwald Oxenstierna (ベールヴァルド・オキセンスシェルナ Bēruvarudo Okisensusheruna).

Attributes

A 'chibi' version of Sweden. Shown in Hidekaz Himaruya's blog.

Appearance

Sweden has short, light blond hair and greenish-blue eyes.[4] He wears a long blue overcoat that appears to be the naval uniform of the 2nd commander from 1920, along with a matching hat, a black shirt and tie, black pants, gloves, boots, and a Nordic Cross necklace under his shirt[5]; he also wears glasses. He is the tallest of all five Nordics[6]; there is approximately a 12cm difference between him and Finland (the latter standing at about 170cm, which would make Sweden 182cm).[2] He is the same height as Russia. His face is said to be the same shape as Germany's and wanted the idea to make "a very stern expression" more prominent.[7] In a 2011 blog post, Himaruya mentioned Sweden was "quite muscular."[8]

Personality and Interests

Sweden was once a viking and was known by numerous titles such as "The Lion of Northern Europe"[9], "The Conqueror Of The Baltic Sea"[9], and "The Supreme Ruler of Scandinavia".[1] In Hetalia Drama CD Interval Vol. 3: Nordic Five!, Finland implied that Sweden is very strong, for he was able to defeat seven countries alone, only with Finland as his ally during the battle with Lithuania and Poland.[10] In modern times, he practices neutrality in military matters; he has calmed down and currently puts his strength into welfare.[1] He is silent and difficult to understand[1]; his taciturnity is due to the fact that he was born in a cold area.[9] Deep down, he is actually quite playful[11], but it's rarely shown because of his intimidating aura.[1] He embarrasses easily and because of this he becomes too shy to say anything.[12][13][14] His Volume 4 profile states he is often overcome with emotion but never shows it.[15] In the volume 4 omake comic, it was stated (by Estonia) he was better at coercion than Germany.[16]

His hobbies include making furniture, glass crafts and art.[9][1][11] In Comic Diary 7, he is shown to be good at sewing, as he made adjustments of his old clothing for Finland, due to their noticeable height difference.[17] It is said that his canned Surströmming can be used as a deadly weapon.[9][18] He speaks in a middle-Fukushima accent, often translated as grunts and truncated words.[19]

Despite his silence, he apparently takes interest in arguments and debates.[1] In Episode 14 published in the March 2013 edition of Comic Birz, it's hinted that Sweden may not fully be aware how scary he appears to others, as seen when he appeared shocked when a mother and son appeared terrified of him while Finland tried to reassure them that Sweden wasn't angry.[20]

Relationships

Denmark

Main Article: Denmark

Denmark once ruled over Sweden and Finland, but Sweden grew aggravated by his control and his refusal to listen. Sweden finally snapped and ran away from their home.[21]. A set of strips on Himaruya's blog suggest that Denmark challenged Sweden a number of times, though they also suggest his defeats.[22] Although their relationship hasn't been discussed much during the modern period, Denmark does show concern for him during the 2011 Christmas event when he discovers Sweden knocked to the ground by Ladonia.[23] Also during the event, Denmark thought it was cool that Sweden lived in a furniture store and said he wanted to try living in a house made of Lego.[24] In a comic published in Comic Birz, Denmark states that he and Sweden used to fight frequently but are now "best buds".[20]

Estonia

Main Article: Estonia

Sweden and Estonia meet for the first time in the strip, The Violent Sve of Northern Europe Takes a Mighty Swing! Upon their first encounter, Estonia screams in fright when seeing Sweden's face but later apologizes for being rude after Finland whispered to him that he made Sweden angry (Sweden however wasn't angry; he simply couldn't hear him) and introduces himself. Sweden later states that he wants Estonia and Latvia to come with him but Estonia nervously says that it's not possible while Latvia adds they need Poland's permission first. Determined, Poland tries to stand his ground against Sweden but later he ends up getting "stranger anxiety" and he is given partially custody of Estonia and Latvia.[25] In the volume 4 omake comic, Estonia writes that when Sweden looks down at him, he feels as if Sweden might want to kill him.[16]

Finland

Main Article: Finland

The two were once under the control of Denmark, but managed to escape.[21] From that point, the two began living with each other; because of this, Sweden considers him to be his "wife" (though Finland denies such relation).[25] Finland later fell under the control of Russia for some time; he stated that he felt more "free" there, though he quickly added that it was more fun being together with Sweden.[12] Finland often refers to Sweden as "Su-san" ("Mr. Swe") for short.[26]

Several strips about their life together were made, including one that features them adopting a dog named Hanatamago[27] and one where Finland runs into a small child (which later turns out to be a very young America). After the boy flees in fright and Finland telling him about the boy, Sweden asks him if he wants kids and he responds that he thought it would be nice if they had a child following them everywhere. Sweden says he'll "do his best" but he doesn't understand what Sweden means.[28]

Although some strips show Finland appearing terrified or uneasy towards Sweden, most strips show a different picture with Finland appearing less afraid of Sweden, most noticeably during some of the Kitayume events like Christmas 2010[29] and Halloween 2011.[30] In Finland's Volume 5 profile, it is said he likes and looks up to Sweden.[11] Sweden's feelings towards Finland have been consistent throughout the series and considers him to be "a good friend".[13][31]

Ladonia

Main Article: Ladonia

Ladonia, who lives on Swedish territory, acts very spoiled towards him, to the point of knocking him down during a tantrum.[23] He also appears to address him as Sve. Sweden, however, has more than once willingly pretended to be attacked by Ladonia by reading from a script that paints Sweden as being mercilessly defeated as Ladonia tackles him, much to Ladonia's joy. In the Christmas 2011 event he appears to have done this to distract Ladonia from fears that he was on Santa's naughty list or that Santa wasn't coming.[23]

Prussia

Main Article: Prussia

Sweden is listed as one of the character options for house cleaning in Osōji Prussia. Prussia is afraid of him and begins having unpleasant flashbacks about the Great Northern War. It is also mentioned that he doesn't understand and know how to communicate with Sweden, even with his "Northern German sixth-sense." Despite this, he decides to go to his house anyway in hopes he will be sold cheap IKEA furniture in gratitude. When he arrives, he immediately faints when he sees his face through a crack in the door. When he awakes inside his home and sees Sweden's face once more, he faints again. This process is said to have repeated another twelve times and the game is labeled as a "bad end".[32]

Sealand

Main Article: Sealand

Sealand is Sweden's adoptive son, whom he bought from an auction.[33]

In the strip, The Creation of Dambolis, Sealand began ignoring his "papa" in favor of playing video games and watching TV. To get Sealand to pay more attention to him, Sweden came up with a solution: He wrote "England" on a box, placed the box over Sealand, and began shaking it (while Sealand made noises like "Please stop it!!"). Sweden called it a Dambolis.[34] Also, in the strip, Fly, Canada-san, fly!, England discovers that Sealand infiltrated the meeting disguised as Canada and pulls out his hair curl. Sealand then tells him not to pull out his hair, stating "I just got papa to swede it for me!".[35] In the strip, To Create Better Products in Northern Europe, Sealand was seen in the background watching Sweden build dolls.[36]

Appearances

Manga

Sweden in period costume from Volume 4 Special Edition.[37]

Sweden was among the second of the Nordics to be designed and has been featured in many sketches and comics since 2007. He makes his debut in the webcomic strip, Su-san and I. Unable to deal with Denmark and his bossy and controlling ways, he rebels and leaves his house with Finland tagging along with him. The two start a new life together but Finland feels uneasy towards him; even to the point he considers running away from him. However he later comes to the conclusion that maybe Sweden isn't a bad person and he simply doesn't know how to communicate all that well.[21] Since then, many strips were made showcasing their life together such as Su-san and the Dog[27], The Battle for America[28], and Polish-Swedish Wars[13], as well as three Comic Diary strips.[17][38][39] Sweden also appears alongside Finland in a strip commemorating the fifth anniversary of Kitayume.[14] The two are seen again together in the strip, Happy 2009!, where they are celebrating the New Years' Eve watching the night sky and Sweden says he's happy to ring in the New Year.[40] In 2009, he makes brief appearances in the comics, The Wordy Nordic Comic and To Create Better Products in Northern Europe, which were later republished in Volume 3.

Most recently, Sweden has appeared in a set of strips focusing on him and Denmark. In the strip, Magic Words for Denmark, the two are at war. While Denmark and Norway are chatting, Denmark notices something walking across the ice which turns out to be Sweden and an army of ships right behind him. Though Denmark is nervous, he shows confidence so he doesn't appear "uncool" in front of Norway, despite the fact they are defenceless. The two men meet on the battlefield and Denmark gives off a speech saying he'll be back for more even if he's defeated but before he can finish, Sweden grabs him and headbutts him in the head. Denmark hopes that Norway is watching him "meet his noble death" but in reality Norway is more focused on the dirt underneath his nails.[41] In Denmark and Sweden's Friendly Relations, Denmark is expanding his inner circle by buying weapons from Netherlands and asking for the help of mercenaries from Hesse. Meanwhile, Sweden and Finland are watching from afar and says that they'll make it through somehow while Finland is not entirely sure.[42]

Sweden has appeared in all the published volumes to date. He makes his debut, but brief, appearance in the Volume 1 strip, Meeting of the World, sitting next to Finland during the world meeting.[43] In Volume 2, he appears in the first part of the strip, I Don't Like This Cafe! Although the customer was terrified of him, he later remarks that the food was delicious as Sweden waves good-bye.[44]. In Volume 3, he makes brief appearances in four republished strips, The Chatty Nordics[45], To Create Better Products in Northern Europe,[36] and The Ruler of Scandinavia and the King of Eastern Europe.[46] The fourth strip is a re-drawn comic published in Comic Diary 5 called Together with Su-san[12] and was merged within The Chatty Nordics chapter.[47] In Volume 4, he makes a brief appearance in the strip Russia and Friends with Denmark as they prepare to attack Russia.[48] In the omake comic released with the volume, he is briefly seen in the background noticing Denmark was missing from the group.[16] In Volume 5, Sweden is seen in the strip, Go Forth! Newspaper Club! Second Half as part of the "Nordic Club". In the strip, he is briefly shown holding Denmark back stating he (Denmark) was lying about Nordic furniture having the ability to turn into a giant robot.[49] In Volume 6, Sweden appears in the strip, Meeting of the Nordic partaking in Iceland's surprise birthday party.[50]

Sweden has appeared in a fair amount of the Kitayume events. He made his first appearance in the aftermath of the 2007 April Fools' Event, offering the idea of making France praise England as punishment for the things he did during the event.[51] In the 2007 Christmas Event, Sweden primarily appears in sketches requested by fans, including one that features him sleeping.[52] In the 2010 Christmas Event, Sweden assists Finland with the requests sent by fans and is later attacked by Parallel France.[29] In the 2011 Halloween Event, Sweden takes part in America's costume contest dressed as a pirate alongside with the rest of the Nordics. When Finland asks if he thought he looked scary with his mask, Sweden merely responses with the word, "Cute".[30] Later on in the event, Sweden is seen with Hantamago on his hand standing on her front legs, leaving Finland shocked and wondering what Sweden had been teaching her.[53] In the 2011 Christmas Event, he is seen a few times with Ladonia, including a strip where he knocks Sweden down during a tantrum, demanding to know if Santa was coming or not.[23]. Later on during the event, he and Ladonia await for Santa with Denmark, Norway, and Iceland.[54] In a requested strip, Sweden shows up to assist Finland with his fight against Russia and gives him planes and warfare that are in rough shape.[55] In the 2013 Halloween Event, Sweden joins the rest of the Nordics for a Halloween gathering,[56] dressed as the ghost who is said to haunt the Taftaholm Herrgard hotel.[57]

Games

Sweden's only game appearance to date is in Osōji Prussia and shows up as one of the character options for house cleaning. Prussia is deeply upset about him being one the options and begins having unpleasant flashbacks of the Great Northern War but decides to go and visit him anyway in hopes of being sold IKEA furniture in gratitude. When he arrives at Sweden's home, his appearance at the door frightens Prussia so much that he faints. He later awakes inside Sweden's home, in bed, and as Sweden is about to put a wet cloth on his head, he faints once again. This process is said to repeat twelve times and the option is labelled as a "bad end".[32]

Drama CDs

Sweden makes his debut in Hetalia Drama CD: Volume 2. He also appears in the first two tracks of the Nordic-centered third interval CD. The first track is an expanded version of The Wordy Nordic Comic/The Chatty Nordics, in which Sweden and Finland await the arrival of the other Nordics at a restaurant and later reacts to the news of Iceland's DNA results.[58] In the second track, Sweden and Finland think back to the 17th-18th century where the two men did a lot of fighting. In a flashback, Denmark is shown sneaking up on Sweden but he ultimately loses against him. In another flashback, the two think back to some of Sweden's old bosses, one of them being Queen Christina. He tells Finland some interesting facts about her life, such as her life on the throne and her desire for travelling. When Finland asks if he was okay with her travelling around the world alone, Sweden says she looked like she was having fun so he was okay with it. Although Sweden's facial expressions didn't change much, Finland says he looked as if he was feeling nostalgic.[10]

Anime

Sweden in Episode 69.

Sweden is first seen in a brief cameo in Episode 01, sitting next to Finland in the meeting room. He later appears in Episode 14 as one of the many characters stuck in line at the supermarket, and comments that it is a peaceful day. Finland then offers to tell Sweden a joke about Russians, to pass the time in the long line. In the English dub, Sweden's line was mistakenly dubbed as one of America's, causing the role of Finland's joke-listening friend to change from Sweden to America, albeit with Sweden's SD image in a bubble still present. He does not appear again until World Series in episodes 69 and 70, adapting the Su-san and I and The Violent Sve of Northern Europe Takes a Mighty Swing! strips from the webcomic. He also appears in Extra Episode 1 which adapts from The Chatty Nordics strip from the third volume.

In The Beautiful World, Sweden makes appearances in Gakuen Hetalia: Go Forth! Newspaper Club!! Second Half, Russia and Friends, and Our Failure. He also appears in a brief scene in Finding Santa. In The World Twinkle, he makes appearances in the Nordic-centered episodes, Meeting of the Nordic and The Nordic Five +α.

His character design was altered slightly for the anime; his blond hair changed to a light brown while his eyes became a darker brown, matching the way he appeared in the Meeting of the World strip. However, in Episode 69, his appearance was changed to fit his original design, as his hair was given a "yellow hue" similar to Finland's. In The Beautiful World, his hair was changed to a light blond and his eyes were given a greenish-blue color, similar to how he appears in the manga and current artwork.

Trivia

  • His birthday corresponds with the National Day of Sweden, also known as Swedish Flag Day.[1]
  • In a 2009 blog post, Himaruya specified that he and Finland were kicked out of Delaware in The Battle for America strips.[59]
  • In the game Osōji Prussia, some shots of Gamla stan can be seen, hinting that Sweden lives within the old town. Prussia also mentions that compared to the days of being a Baltic empire, Sweden lives "pretty frugally."[32]
  • It has been said by Hidekaz Himaruya that Sweden is gay. It has also been said that he only acts that way towards Finland.[60] Sweden seems to be the only character with a confirmed sexuality.
