List of minor Asian Hetalia characters
- Due to technical restrictions, this has been separated from the main list of minor Hetalia characters.
This is a list of the minor characters who are personifications of Asian countries, regions, and other national representations that appear in the series Hetalia, created by Hidekaz Himaruya. These characters often do not appear within the manga or anime, but are drawn in official artwork or sketches, or are referenced in official materials.
Countries
In response to a fan's story that they had heard of how the flag of Hungary came to be, Himaruya remarked that Turkey and Kyrgyzstan had similar origin stories to their flags to the one the fan told.[1]
An Asian character who has only appeared in a sketch at the end of The Story Of China And Teensy Japan[2] and a chibi sketch of the Asian Nations group.[3] Mongolia is said to have bullied Hungary in his youth, along with the Ottoman Empire (Turkey).[4] As a result, it is mentioned on a character profile for Hungary that she loathes them, as well as Romania.[5] It is specified in a 2007 blog post that Mongolia attacked her in the 13th Century and that the inside of her country took much damage.[6] It seems that he may also have bullied China, as Himaruya said in a 2006 blog post that he thought the story of China being bullied by Mongolia "might be cute".[7] Mongolia has also been mentioned as having dominated Russia and made China cringe, and also having had a personality change described as "surprising", but it is unknown as to whether this personality change was a change in the character's personality over the course of his life or Himaruya changing his mind about the character's personality.[8] It is possible that it was the latter that he meant, however, as despite stating in a blog post in May of 2008 that he had decided on a character for Mongolia,[9] he stated later the same year in another blog post that while initially he had envisioned a "very wild" character for Mongolia, he had grown to envision him as being more "nonchalant".[10] Mongolia was also noted to have occupied Hungary in a time period that gave off a feeling of, in Himaruya's words, "hang in there, Hungary!"[11]
A character seen only by name on a list Sealand was keeping of countries who did not have the mark the Parallel Nations were looking for in the 2010 Christmas event.[12]
North Korea was first mentioned in blog posts by Himaruya in 2006. When a fan asked if the character would be male and Korea's twin brother, Himaruya replied that he tentatively thought of North Korea as being South Korea's younger twin brother, with an aloof personality. The character also was described as being timid but not a "crybaby", similar to Italy, as well as being quiet and having a fondness for playing musical instruments.[13]
Pakistan was first mentioned on a list kept by Sealand in the 2010 Christmas event of countries who did not have the mark that the Parallel Nations were searching for.[12] The character was later mentioned again in response to a fan question following the 2011 Halloween Event. Himaruya was asked if Pakistan was at the 2011 Halloween Event and said that he or she was probably dancing somewhere in the back having thoughts like "That bastard..." in regards to India's dance routine. He goes on to state that "Once you study the history of India, you would be amazed by great interactions between them."[14]
When asked about personifications of Arabic nations, Himaruya states that he finds the United Arab Emirates interesting, and envisions him as a charming old man living in the hot weather.[15]
Regions
The characters in this section are personifications of regions and cities, as well as other administrative areas that are not considered independent countries.
Chinese Provinces
- Fujian (福建 Fukken )
The first mention of Fujian was China reading a message from him after the events of the 2010 Christmas Event. His message stated that he had laughed upon seeing the pictures of China crossdressing.[16] He later appeared in a scene in the 2011 Halloween Event, in which he is sleeping through the brawl in China to decide on the year's costume theme.[17]
- Guangdong (広東 Kanton )
Guangdong was mentioned in Hetalia Fantasia 2 by China, who claimed that Guangdong could make anything out of the game's items.
- Hebei (河北 Kahoku )
Hebei was mentioned following the events of the 2010 Christmas Event in a scene with China reading a message from the character. Hebei's message to China asked "What exactly happened..." in response to seeing the pictures of China crossdressing.[16]
- Henan (河南 Kanan )
Henan was mentioned following the events of the 2010 Christmas Event in a scene with China reading a message from the character. Henan's message to China told him he looked "surprisingly cute" in the clothes he was wearing in the crossdressing pictures.[16]
- Jiangsu (江蘇 Kōso )
Jiangsu was mentioned following the events of the 2010 Christmas Event in a scene with China reading a message from the character. Jiangsu's message to China suggested he "definitely come to the Lunar New Year party dressed like that!" in response to the pictures the character had seen of China crossdressing.[16]
- Liaoning (遼寧 Ryōnei )
Liaoning was mentioned in Hetalia Fantasia 2 by China, who claimed that Liaoning could make anything out of the game's items.
- Sichuan (四川 Shisen )
Sichuan was mentioned following the events of the 2010 Christmas Event in a scene with China reading a message from the character. Sichuan's message to China stated that Sichuan found the pictures of China crossdressing "strange, but I approve".[16]
Japanese Prefectures
These characters have appeared as chibis on Himaruya's website as updated versions of some personifications he had made for the Japanese Prefectures years earlier. Aside from Osaka, none of these characters have appeared in any comics other than "Watching the WBC Together with all the Japanese Prefectures" from Hetalia: Axis Powers Volume 4. Many characters closely resemble a character from Himaruya's earlier webcomics and some may have served as inspiration for that character.
Hokkaidō Region
Hokkaidō is depicted as a young man with dark hair, wearing a cowboy hat and a vest with a collared shirt underneath. He appears to own a pet calf. His design is similar to the character Iyuta Nibutani from the series Advance! Kitakou Broadcasting Club Pure.
Tōhoku Region
Aomori is depicted as a young man with black hair with a small ahoge and brown eyes. He is shown wearing a black shirt with matching pants, as well as a beige jacket. He also seems to own a small spotted cat. His design is similar to the character Ringo Tsugaru from the series Advance! Kitakou Broadcasting Club.
Iwate is depicted as a young woman with long, blueish-grey hair with bangs and brown eyes. She is shown wearing a beige beret and two small flowers in her hair, one above her left ear and the other in her hair on the other side. She wears a uniform with a beige jacket and a dark green skirt, and holds what appears to be a book. A creature resembling a kappa is shown clinging to her skirt.
Miyagi is depicted as a young man with light-colored hair with a long ahoge that swoops down, and brown eyes. He wears a uniform consisting of a dark grey jacket and black tie, plaid black and white pants, and a cape that has a pattern of circles near its bottom edge. In one hand, he carries a Japanese sword, and in the other, a plate of what appears to be zunda mochi (mochi with green soybean paste).
Akita is depicted as a young woman with long, dark brown hair and brown eyes. She wears a black girl's uniform with black tights and white shoes. She was drawn holding a Namahage mask.
Yamagata is depicted as a young woman with short, black hair with bangs, with the right side held back with a white hair clip. She wears what appears to be a white tenugui that has a small flower on it, what appears to be a white apron with a dark cherry symbol in the corner covering an outfit with dark sleeves, black tights and white shoes. She is shown wearing black oven mitts and carrying a pot with hot food.

Predecessor States
The characters in this section are personifications of ancient kingdoms/empires or tribes, many of which have yet to have a role in the webcomic. Their existence was mostly first revealed through information on the Bamboo Thicket blog and profiles.
Ancient Civilizations
- Byzantine Empire (ビザンツ帝国 Bizantsu teikoku ), alt. (ビザンツ, Bizantsu)
Although Ancient Greece was also referred to in Axis Powers Hetalia: The CD, an independently-produced CD scripted by Himaruya that was produced in 2007 but not released until September of 2008, as the Byzantine Empire, a May 2008 blog entry by Himaruya identified them as separate characters, listing Byzantine Empire as an enemy of Magyar.[18] In the CD, it is said that Turkey (as the Ottoman Empire) had feelings for the character before conquering and killing them. However, it has yet to be seen which route Himaruya will take with a Byzantine character.
- Pontus (ポントス Pontosu )
An ancient kingdom on the southern shore of the Black Sea. She appeared, albeit briefly, as a chibi head in a chapter of Hetalia: World☆Stars Volume 1, where Ancient Rome listed her as being a cute girl alongside Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt.[19] It is currently unknown if she has any relations to any other characters.
- Three Kingdoms
In response to a fan's question as to whether during China's Three Kingdoms Period the three kingdoms in question, Wei (魏 Gi ), Wu (呉 Go ), and Shu (蜀 Shoku ) had been living together in China's house, Himaruya replied that that would be extremely chaotic but also sounded very interesting. He went on to say that it seemed to him that Wei and the others would have "fierce personalities". [20]
Japanese Feudal Domains
These characters have appeared in The World at War and the Fool of Owari, representing the different territories or clans of feudal Japan. While Aizu and Mito made cameo appearances in a previous storyline (Black Ships Have Come!), the other three have only appeared in this unfinished story, though Owari is the only one involved in the actual story so far (with Kanazawa and Sendai appearing in footnotes). Each character is based off of a character from one of Himaruya's previous webcomics. For information on Osaka, see Osaka.
However, Himaruya later released designs for personifications of Japan's modern prefectures that do not bear any resemblance to his other characters. Due to the unfinished status of Owari, it is uncertain if Kanazawa and Sendai are still intended as canon and if other character notes still apply.
- Aizu Domain (会津藩 Aidzu-han )
A character representing the Aizu Domain (which was part of the Mutsu Province, and now the westernmost half of Fukushima Prefecture).
He is very serious and loyal, but too hard-headed to keep up with the changing times. Aizu tried to fight to the end in the Boshin War, but Sendai dragged him down and he was eventually defeated by his sister (Miharu) and fell into poverty.
In Black Ships Have Come!, he is the one to suggest that the Japanese find a way to get along with the Westerners, though he is chewed out for his idea by Mito.
The basis for his design is the character Homare Aizu from the series Barjona Bombers.
Kanazawa Domain
- Kanazawa Domain (金沢藩 Kanazawa-han )
A character representing the Kanazawa (Kaga) Domain (now Ishikawa Prefecture). He is usually moody and depressed due to having a lot of rain. He doesn't like to fight, and would prefer to write poetry or create art.
The basis for his design is the character Noto Kanazawa from the series Advance! Kitakou Broadcasting Club. Though the Pure version of Noto has also made cameo appearances in the Hetalia series, it appears that Kanazawa is modeled after Noto's earlier personality and appearance (dubbed "White Noto").
- Mito Domain (水戸藩 Mito-han )
A character representing the Mito Domain, Mito is a logical, spirited, and grouchy man with an enormous ego and bad temper. He has a strong sense of justice that can get out of control, which causes him to make trouble for others.
In the Black Ships strips, Mito becomes angered at the idea of making peace with Western powers and wants no part with interacting with the foreigners.
The basis for his design is the character Junsa Mito from the series Advance! Kitakou Broadcasting Club.
- Owari Domain (尾張藩 Owari-han )
A character representing the Owari Domain. A wild woman with a very "strange" personality, she is often left out due to her insistence at being non-conformist. She is very vocal about money and food, and her specialty is inventing strange types of food. It is said that she has a complicated relationship with Mikawa.
In the unfinished Owari strip, she urges Japan to stay away from Oda Nobunaga, the future ruler, as she finds him to be a disgrace.
The basis for her design is the character Miyako Owari from the series Advance! Kitakou Broadcasting Club, though Miyako's hair is long and blonde while this Owari's hair is dark and held up in a bun. Even so, she retains the red hairclips that Miyako wears as accessories in her hair.
- Sendai Domain (仙台藩 Sendai-han )
A character representing the Sendai Domain. A foolish woman that is described as the "Italy" to Japan. She is considered to be useless and cowardly, and said to have ignored battles if food didn't come. Her most notable features are her pigtails and large straw hat.
The basis for her design is the character Hagina Sendai from the series Barjona Bombers.
Other Historic States
- Bengal (ベンガル Bengaru )
In the anime adaption of China's Age of Exploration, the extended explanation mentions that China got a giraffe from "Bengal-san." Considering the time period, they are likely a personification of the Bengal Sultanate. It is unclear whether this character would also represent Bangladesh (バングラデシュ Banguradeshu ) as well.
A male character who briefly appears in Hetalia: Axis Powers Volume 3. Golden Horde is also known as Ulus of Jochi (ジョチ・ウルス Jochi Urusu ), or Tatar (タタール Tatāru ) (as Russia called his erstwhile boss). He briefly appears as a cameo when Hungary explains to Lithuania about the 'surrounding idiots' in the area and when Lithuania's boss contemplates on the potential enemies, which he noted the Golden Horde's unstoppable expansion. He also appears as a silhouette in Volume 4. For quite a while, many fans speculated that Golden Horde was the same character as Mongolia, simply with a different name; however, in a January 2015 blog entry, Himaruya stated that he was in fact "a different person, but a person from Mongolia's house."[21]
- Ternate (テルナーテ Terunāte )
Mentioned by Netherlands in his battle against Portugal in chapter 84 of Hetalia: World☆Stars, which would later be included as chapter 66 in Hetalia: World☆Stars Volume 3. During the battle, Netherlands summons his "elite Dutch armada" from Ternate. As only the name was mentioned, it is unknown whether they also represent the modern Indonesian island of Ternate in addition to the historical Sultanate of Ternate.
A character who briefly appeared in some sketches and the comic "The Story about the Early Days of China and Japan", where he is shown carrying some kind of tablet. He is depicted as a young, bald monk. In the anime adaptation of that story, he was replaced with a talking panda. He was described in a 2007 blog post as being "variously pitiful".[6]
Himaruya mentioned the Ryukyu Islands and Australia within a 2008 Bamboo Thicket post, noting he hadn't initially thought he would draw them, but that they were likely to be added. Himaruya also expressed that he thought the two would have contrasting personalities. It is possible the character representing Okinawa Prefecture also serves as a representation of Ryukyu, as it is the Kingdom's successor state.
