Development
The announcement, as part of a series of announcements, was first teased by Hidekaz Himaruya's newly launched Twitter account,[5] and news of the announcement subsequently leaked two days prior.[6] The leaked pages were from the December 2020 issue of Jump Square, which was subsequently published on November 4, 2020.[7] Hiroshi Watanabe, Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, and Mariko Oka were confirmed to return in their roles from previous seasons as director, series script supervisor, and character designer, respectively.[8] Further supporting cast information was announced on December 3, 2020, along with messages from the confirmed cast.[9]
At the Jump Festa 2021 event for the series,[10] a teaser trailer debuted containing new footage and announcing the casting for Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Portugal,[11] with the official Twitter account[12] and PASH publishing the information at the event's conclusion.[13] Messages from the new cast members were also posted to Twitter following the announcement.[14] Further production staff were also confirmed, including Masakazu Miyake as art director, Imari Katsuragi as color key artist, and Yuki Koike as editor, as well as the returns of Akira Shimozaki as director of photography, Takuya Hiramitsu as sound director at Dax Production, and Conisch as music composer.[11][8] On January 15, 2021, the website and twitter account for the anime confirmed that Latvia, Finland, Sweden, and Australia would appear this season,[15][16] and on January 22, it was confirmed that Romano, Canada, Bulgaria, Greece, and Estonia would also be appearing. Yuki Kaida was also confirmed to once again provide narration.[17][18] On January 28, a 60 second trailer was posted to the anime's official twitter account, which announced the name of the season's ending theme, "Chikyuu Marugoto Hug Shitainda", and included a clip of the song along with release information.[19] A new version of the trailer, which fixed some animation errors, was uploaded on February 3rd.[20] On April 1, along with information on the DVD and Blu-ray release, it was announced that Luxembourg would make his anime debut in the first OVA episode, alongside Netherlands and Belgium.[21]
Footage from the Jump Festa 2021 teaser trailer indicated that the anime would adapt Chapters 1 and 12 from Hetalia: World☆Stars Volume 1; Chapters 14, 23, 30, and 34 from Volume 2; and Chapters 60 and 67 from Volume 3.[12] Additional footage in the 60 second trailer indicated that the anime would adapt Chapter 39 from Hetalia: World☆Stars Volume 2.[20]
