The second season of Hetalia: Axis Powers, based on the webmanga of the same name by Hidekaz Himaruya, premiered on July 24, 2009 and concluded on March 5, 2010 on the website Animate.TV. It follows the adventures of anthropomorphic countries as they live through historical events and interact with focus on differences in culture and positive and negative Japanese stereotypes of other countries.
Recurring storylines this season include the continued bonding of the Axis Powers prior to the outbreak of World War II, the complicated cultural and historical history surrounding the Allied Forces of World War II, Russia's life before and after the end of the Soviet Union, The cultural and historical interactions that Japan has with America and Europe, Early colonization of America, The close relations between Switzerland and Liechtenstein that began after World War I, and fictional stories referencing the similarities Canada shares with America.
Four DVD Volumes containing episodes from the second season were released in Japan between October 23, 2009 and March 25, 2010. Each volume was originally released as a limited edition package containing a special CD with two alternate versions of the Marukaite Chikyuu theme song sung by a different character.[1] The entire second season was released in one box set on October 24, 2012.[1] Two compilation episodes collecting segments from season one were included on the Axis Powers Fandisc, which was released in Japan on May 25, 2010,[1], and were later included on the English release of the fourth season. The Volume releases were distributed by Muse in Taiwan[2] and later repackaged into one box set,[3] released first in Hong Kong where it was distributed by Kam & Ronson.[4]
In the United States and Canada, Funimation Entertainment announced on January 8, 2010 that they had licensed the first two season of Hetalia[5], despite rumors that they had reportedly passed on the titled in 2009. The complete second season was released on October 26, 2010[6], and was later repackaged with the first season as a single release on March 6, 2012[7]. The first release was distributed by Manga Entertainment in the United Kingdom[8] and by Madman Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand.[9]
