Singapore (シンガポール, Shingapōru) is a supporting character in the series Hetalia.

Appearance

Singapore is depicted as a young man with brown hair with a tuft of white in the front. He is formally depicted wearing a light-colored uniform with a darker beret, and white rubber gloves. In addition, he has been shown wearing a casual outfit consisting of a white short-sleeved button-down collared shirt, a black-and-white patterned tie, dark brown capri pants, dark brown shoes, and white rubber gloves. In another illustration this outfit is paired with covered sandals. It's later confirmed he owns gloves in both black and white. On Malaysia's design sheet, he makes an appearance dressed in a dark vest with large, light-colored sleeves.

A stylized chibi design posted to Twitter indicates that he has peach-colored eyes with blue accenting.

Personality and Interests

Singapore is described in his profile as "surprisingly tough mentally." In his debut, he voices support for taking a more casual approach to meetings, saying that the more formal procedures weighs them down. He appears happy to be a part of Philippines's group selfie, but is less enthused by the prospect of taking several more. He considers it important for nations to have their own image, and enjoys that part of his is having "cute goods". He is also shown to value cleanliness, joking that anyone who spills food during a meeting will be fined, and is shown helping Thailand clean up after.

While he normally conveys a genuine and cheerful disposition, when he's around Malaysia he becomes more standoffish and intimidating, and has been shown baring his teeth, though he is not known to act this way around any other nation. Character notes reveal that he has a specific, sparkling smile that's intended for tourists. He also owns a plush of a Merlion.

Malaysia considers himself a brother to Singapore, but Singapore doesn't feel the same way. They used to live in the same house, but split up after a series of disagreements. In the modern day, they've been arguing over who is responsible for paying the water bill, which has made Singapore act very curt towards Malaysia. This is shown as acting disinterested when Malaysia arrives at a meeting, and putting on impractical pineapple tart glasses when Malaysia asks him to call him a variation of "big brother". When it's later revealed that the way Singapore treats Malaysia, including not having smiled around him in years, is uncharacteristic, Malaysia is initially upset. However, he soon becomes excited when he realizes his relationship with Singapore is unique.

Following color a illustration posted to Twitter, he made his formal debut in the three hundred and seventy-first serialized chapter of World☆Stars, and was identified as Singapore three chapters later. He supports Philippines' motion to make meetings lest formal, and is seen at the next ASEAN meeting holding a bag of snacks. Later in the conference, a meal is served that Singapore is in charge of, and other others in attendance comment on how stylish it is. After mentioning the variety of specialties and tastes that can be found at his home, he tells everyone to be careful as there's a fine for spilling food, though he says he's kidding. Later in the meeting he brings up that it's important for nations to have their own image, and helps brainstorm what Thailand's would be. It's also revealed that, like most of the other ASEAN countries, he was stuck in heavy traffic on his way to the meeting. When Italy guested in their meeting, he asked what is the main factor of Italy's national branding, in which Italy replied that he has no idea but it's important to be buono and bravo. When the meeting concluded, he revealed that Indonesia enjoyed eating the sweets the most and that Malaysia is just catching sea cucumbers outside all along the meeting.

Trivia

• In 2008, Himaruya mentioned that Singapore had been designed; however, the character's image was ultimately not revealed, leading to speculation that it may have only been a draft that he discarded.
• The character first appeared in a color illustration posted to Himaruya's Twitter in April 2021, alongside an announcement that the character would make his formal debut in the three hundred and seventy-first serialized chapter of Hetalia: World☆Stars.
