Malaysia (マレーシア Marēshia) is a supporting character in the series Hetalia.

Appearance
Malaysia is depicted as a young man with a shokkaku (しょっかく) hairstyle, with the long side bangs reminiscent of a tiger's ears, and large pointed eyebrows. He is formally drawn wearing the traditional uniform of the Royal Malay Regiment. In addition, he has been shown dressing more casually in a light button-up shirt with dark pants,[3] as well as a light tank top with dark shorts.[4]
A stylized chibi design posted to Twitter indicates that he has orange colored eyes and burgundy colored brunet hair.[1]
Personality and Interests
Malaysia is shown to be enthusiastic, and is described as openhearted and affectionate. In an early appearance he gets distracted collecting sea cucumbers for everyone to eat during a meeting and ends up missing it, and is disappointed to discover that no one waited around for him to arrive. He is described as a country of "budi bahasa budaya kita" ("courtesy of our culture") who places high value on harmony, and as someone who takes honor and dignity seriously. It is also unclear whether he is actually confident in himself or not, though he refers to himself as someone all the other Southeast Asian nations love.[5][6]

Singapore

Malaysia considers himself a brother to Singapore, and even asks him to call him "big brother", but Singapore doesn't feel the same way. They used to live in the same house, but split up after a series of disagreements. In the modern day, they've been arguing over who is responsible for paying the water bill, which has made Singapore act very curt towards Malaysia,[5] to the point where Malaysia sees him as someone who likes to intimidate others and bare his teeth, though he soon realizes he's the only one Singapore acts that way around. He's initially upset by how Singapore treats him, and expresses how important their relationship is to him, and wants Singapore to treat him the way he does other nations. However, he becomes excited when he realizes that Singapore treats him in a unique way, which he believes means he's a special person in Singapore's life.[6]

Following the release of his character design on Twitter[3], he made his formal debut in the three hundred and seventy-eighth serialized chapter of World☆Stars, where he is depicted collecting sea cucumbers.[4] He later arrives late at the meeting with a horrifically large sea cucumber in tow, and is disappointed that he couldn't eat it together with everyone. He's excited when he believes Singapore waited for him, though Singapore denies this and pointedly ignores him.[5] Following this, he goes to Indonesia and Philippines and asks them for advice on how to improve his relationship with Singapore. He begins emotionally describing his feelings in detail when he discovers that he's the only one Singapore treats in a hostile way, and is initially stunned when he sees the cheerful version of Singapore others know in an advertisement. However, he's ultimately re-energized as this means Singapore treats him in a special way.[6]
Trivia
- In November of 2010, Himaruya uploaded to his blog drawings that many people initially mistook to be preliminary sketches of characters for Portugal, Luxembourg, Indonesia, and Malaysia; however, it was soon specified that these were merely sketches of people he had met from these countries. Himaruya reiterated how widely requested a Malaysia character was, going so far as to say that Malaysia was "the most requested character in Southeast Asia".[7]
- In response to a fan's 2011 question about recent new characters, Himaruya said that Malaysia was among the most widely requested characters.[8]
- The first images of the character were released as a design sheet, along with another sheet showcasing discarded draft designs. Early drafts show him with hair styled similarly to Singapore's, and with thick eyebrows similar to England's. He is also shown wearing the cap of the Royal Malay Regiment uniform, which was ultimately omitted in his final design.[3]
