The tallest of the Allies, as well as the tallest of all the nations (together with [[Sweden]],) Russia wears a long, heavy tan coat, green pants, brown gloves, and a long tan or pink scarf. When not wearing his scarf, he is shown to wear bandages around his neck. He is often shown carrying around a bottle of vodka, a sunflower, or a faucet pipe. It's said that he'll pull the pipe out and put things that don't belong in it, such as food, only to pull them out and eat them later.<ref name="Vol2prof"/> He is very pale, and has a round, childish face with a prominent and distinctive nose. His hair is slightly wavy and a pale ashen blond, and his eyes are violet, though they were initially colored blue in early color artwork. Compared to the first drawings Russia's bangs fall to the left as Himaruya found that they looked better that way from the front. His expression is a calm and gentle smile almost all the time. Behind his constant smile, it's said no one knows what he's thinking.<ref name="Vol5SE"/>

When Russia greets people, he does so with a kiss on the lips. When Germany denied him the greeting also pushing his hand on his face to ensure he didn't kiss him, Russia immediately became very sad and pouted, beginning to walk away, before Germany insisted that he greet him any way but with a kiss to the mouth. He has been tormented since his childhood, having seen many tragedies and wars, which have cracked his mentality. General Winter haunts and attacks him every year, which has caused him to hate the snow. When Russia is upset, he begins to chant "[[wikipedia:Kolkhoz|KolKolKol]]" to threaten and frighten others into submission. However, there has been speculation that there are other possible meanings for 'kol' than those involving ''kolkhoz'':
* Tzar [[wikipedia:Ivan_IV_of_Russia|Ivan The Terrible]]'s favorite way to deal with disobedience was impaling. 'To impale', pronounced in Russian as сажать на кол (sazhat' na kol), or just на кол 'na kol' is easily understood. So, Russia is possibly trying to intimidate people by the threat of impalement, although he is saying the noun 'kol' (which means 'stake', in this context being thrust towards a person).
* There is also the possibility that Russia could be issuing a warning to others. 'Kolokol' means 'bell' in Russian, and 'kol' is often used as an onomatopoeia in Russian for the tolling of a bell, a centuries-old designation of approaching danger.
*Another interpretation offered by the Japanese fandom is that "kolkolkol" is "korukorukoru", which sounds similar to "korosu", the Japanese word referring to killing.
However, in the Comic Birz serialization featuring Russia, instead of the usual kolkolkol, the normal sound effect for an intimidating aura was used, and Russia stayed silent, making it possible that this was retconned recently.

His heart seems to sometimes fall out of his chest. In the first strip depicting the meeting of the allies, America tells the other allies that their role is to back him up. Russia then asks what America's role will be, and America declares that he will be the hero.

For the most part, America and Russia are shown to dislike each other. In '''Reducing Your Opponent's Willpower American Style''', America tries to break Russia's spirit during the Cold War by ordering 25 cm condoms from him. Russia makes and sends the condoms, but labels them "extra small". This was called back on America's birthday, where Russia gives America a huge box of "extra small" condoms as a present. America replies by boasting the box will last him a month, which Russia comments is lewd, and then they laugh while an intimidating aura emits from both of them. <ref>http://www.geocities.jp/himaruya/indy.htm</ref> In '''Lithuania's Out-Sourcing''', Russia is upset that Lithuania is living with America, and meets with America to tell him to take good care of his "ex". In the 7th episode of the Birz serialization, America says that Russia is the "bad guy" of the Allies, because he was once friends with Germany and kisses everybody as a greeting. Russia replies by offering to make America's gums bleed, which America calmly declines. Later, England complains about America's provocative attitude, but Russia tells England that he finds it one of America's positive points, and also that the provocative ones are more fun to snap in half.

However, it is shown that America and Russia can get along well in modern day. It is shown that on Halloween, they will meet up together to plan to scare England.

===Belarus===

Russia is Belarus' older brother. While Belarus loves her brother to the point of obsession and wishes to marry him, her feelings are not returned. Russia finds Belarus beautiful, but he sees her only as a younger sibling and is frightened by her behavior. She is shown to stalk him, as well as stick by his side to intimidate others. The ''Hetalia'' "desktop buddies" elaborated on Belarus' obsession for Russia further, with her stating her desire to get suggestive photos of her brother. According to Himaruya the dress that she wears is a gift from her brother, which is why she wears it so much even though it's rather old-fashioned and she tries to wear it as often as possible.

According to her appearance in the Sealand and Latvia mascots, she'll only tell her hobbies to her brother. Despite her creepy love for him, many of the things she imagines herself doing with him are fairly normal, such as walking through the woods, singing, "moving along smoothly," proudly smiling at each other, being in awe of nature's splendor, and "having a talk about the greatness of love." However her diary entries occasionally involve her doing things such as going through his garbage, stealing all his underwear, smelling and wearing his underwear as a nightcap, looking through pornographic pictures of him, and making a fansite for him as well. She's also expressed the desire to '''be''' his underwear, as well as his toothbrush and fantasized about having sex with him.

Although she easily becomes jealous when he shows attention to people besides her, she often tries to recruit other countries into becoming Russia's servants, implying she supports Russia's dream for everyone to "become one" with him.

Russia and China have had a close relationship throughout history, and they are usually shown to be on good terms. However, China is very suspicious and fearful of his northern neighbor, especially after the [[wikipedia:Sino-Soviet Split|Sino-Soviet Split]]. In return, Russia has been shown to stalk China, especially when disguised in a panda suit. At a G8 meeting, Russia insists that the member they are missing is China, despite China not being part of the G8. England comments that Russia just wants China to be there. In the 8th episode of the Birz serialization, China shows concern for Russia when he appears to have caught a cold, and offers him him medicine. Enjoying this attention, Russia winks at China and says, "Oh, stop it, you!"

===Lithuania===

In the past, Lithuania was Russia's subordinate and is not-too-subtly hinted to be a victim of his abuse; in a flashback, Lithuania is shown wearing a maid costume with Russia lashing him with a whip in the '''While You Were Gone''' strip. The strip later shows that Lithuania has deep scars covering his back. In the present, Russia still stalks Lithuania, and states at the world meeting that he would like to see a troubled Lithuania coming back to him in tears. When Russia visited America, who was taking care of Lithuania after WWI, he told America to be good to his 'ex,' but during the Great Depression, Lithuania returned to Russia's home. After working Lithuania so hard that he passed out on Russia, Lithuania woke up scared only for Russia to calmly ask what his dreams were. Lithuania shared his dreams of being free in the rye fields, and then Russia went so far as to share his own of dream of "living in a warm place with sunflowers"; soon after, Russia allowed Lithuania to fall asleep on his shoulder, though he replaced himself with a panda when Lithuania woke up the second time.

When they first met as children, Russia was under the Tatar yoke. He told Lithuania he would become a large, powerful country one day, and when that happened, they would be friends. Lithuania asked why they couldn't be friends right then, and Russia said he was too weak, but he would try his hardest. <ref name="Vol3-yoke">{{cite book|last=Hidekaz|first=Himaruya|year=2010|title=Axis Powers ヘタリア 3|trans_title=Axis Powers Hetalia 3|publisher=Gentosha|page=90|isbn=978-4-3448-1938-2}}</ref>

Their relationship was further soured by the years of post-war Soviet domination.

It should be noted that Poland is not afraid of Russia; he actively defends Lithuania from Russia, despite the inherent threat.

Ukraine is Russia's older sister, and she acted as a mother to both him and Belarus when they were younger. They have a very complicated relationship. Russia finds her kind and steady, yet weak. After the fall of the Soviet Union, she is desperate to distance herself from Russia and make friends in the European Union. This makes Russia very depressed, and he wonders why Ukraine "hates" him. However, Ukraine still cares for Russia and will try to provide resources to him, only to be blocked by her bosses or other issues between them, such as paying for oil. Russia wonders why their relationship went sour, and tries reminiscing on a time in their childhood where they got along peacefully, only to realize that they had never seen eye-to-eye. She gave Russia his most frequently worn scarf on a brutal and cold day, but then told him he had to make Kiev successful in return. <ref name="Vol2prof"/>

When he finally succeeded in going on a date with her for three minutes, it ended with her breaking all of his fingers though he continued to remain oblivious to her harsh nature and simply stated that his fingers were broken because he could bend them like that.

A strip implied that Belarus hates him because her brother favors him. It's implied that Belarus' hatred for him comes from the real-life history fact between the two countries from Lithuania's annexation of Belarus and due to this, she was separated from her brother for a long time, during the [[wikipedia:Grand Duchy of Lithuania|Grand Duchy of Lithuania]] era.

Curiously in the ''Halloween 2011'' event, she seem to be more civil with him and he is shown to be shocked to see her badmouthing Denmark.

When they managed to meet up again, Poland attempted to play a prank on Lithuania with a water gun but wound up discovering the scars on his back.

In World War II, Lithuania was hesitant to speak to Germany because Prussia had faced brutal defeats at the hands of him and Poland, but Germany did not seem to remember, to Lithuania's relief.

When Prussia is integrated with the Soviets, Lithuania admits to Prussia that he hates him, and does not like being honest with him. It is heavily implied that the deep scars covering his back were inflicted by Russia because he was the main target of his harsh treatment.

After WWI, Lithuania spent eleven years working at America's house. Russia visits at one point during Lithuania's outsourcing to tell America to take good care of him, because he is his possession. Lithuania had to return to Russia once the Great Depression started. In the epilogue of "Lithuania's Out-Sourcing", it's shown Russia was so upset about Lithuania temporarily leaving him that he overworked him to the point of passing out. Lithuania woke up on Russia's shoulder, horrified, but instead of retaliating cruelly, Russia was calm and asked Lithuania what his dreams were. Lithuania shared that his dreams were to be free in the rye fields, and then Russia smiled and confessed his dreams were to live in a warm place surrounded by sunflowers. Lithuania thought this was "strangely cute" and passed out on Russia again, and woke up to find Russia replaced by a panda bear.

In modern times, Lithuania is shown as sometimes being nervous around Russia, whose approach towards him seems rather unchanged. It is said Lithuania is "always in Russia's watch", and is shown to still be stalked by him. Russia states at the '''Meeting of the World''' that he would like to see a troubled Lithuania coming back to him in tears.

A comic from Volume 3 of the manga shows that the two of them met as small children while Russia was under the [[wikipedia:Tatars|Tatar's]] rule. Russia declared that he would be a large powerful country one day, and then they could be friends. After becoming poor from the fallout of WWI, Lithuania lived with America for a brief period of time and worked for him as his housekeeper. He proclaimed it was 'heaven' and was fond of America. He was well received by [[Creatures of Hetalia#America.27s Whale|America's whale friend]] and [[Creatures of Hetalia#Tony|Tony]], who often beamed him up into his spaceship out of jealousy when Lithuania paid attention to the whale.

After the [[wikipedia:Great Depression|Great Depression]] hit and poverty spread throughout the nations, Lithuania had to return to Russia. In a more present-day strip, Lithuania returned to America's house to celebrate his birthday.

Lithuania holds a crush on Russia's younger sister since childhood though it isn't returned, for she only has eyes for her brother and harbors hatred for Lithuania. In a discarded strip, it was said that she'd been doing things such as breaking his fingers since they were children<ref name="passu">{{cite web|title=没ったコマUP|url=http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-361.html|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|date=October 19, 2008|accessdate=November 17, 2010|trans_title=Discarded Frames UP}}</ref>, however as it was discarded and a proper one released (though, deleted later) it's likely this has been removed. Furthermore, a newer blog post referred to them as something of childhood friends. When he finally succeeded in going on a date with her for three minutes, it ended with her breaking all of his fingers though he continued to remain oblivious to her harsh nature and simply stated that his fingers were broken because he could bend them like that.

A strip implied that Belarus hates him because her brother favors him. It's implied that Belarus' hatred for him comes from the real-life history fact between the two countries from Lithuania's annexation of Belarus and due to this, she was separated from her brother for a long time, during the [[wikipedia:Grand Duchy of Lithuania|Grand Duchy of Lithuania]] era.

Curiously in the ''Halloween 2011'' event, she seem to be more civil with him and he is shown to be shocked to see her badmouthing Denmark.

===Poland===

The two have been rather "close friends," though Poland can be self-centered (as shown in the earlier strips where their relationship seemed to be more one-sided). However, their relationship has become less one-sided than it was in initial strips. They were partners in the days of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, before Russia split them apart and took Lithuania under his control. When they managed to meet up again, Poland attempted to play a prank on Lithuania with a water gun but wound up discovering the scars on his back.

Poland refers to Lithuania as "Liet" (short for '''Lietuva''', the Lithuanian word for Lithuania), and won't stand for him being bullied by Russia, as revealed in both versions of '''Meeting Of The World''' (yet to different extents in each version). In '''The Legend of the Iron Wolf''' strip, the two share stories about the creation of their capitals, although it can be questioned whether Poland heard Lithuania's story.

===Prussia===

When they were children, Prussia (as Teutonic Knights) would bully the then-Pagan Lithuania into converting to Christianity. They are further shown as enemies in '''The Ruler of Scandinavia and The King of Eastern Europe''', at the First Battle of Battle of Tannenberg, where Lithuania defeats Prussia and saves Poland from being killed by feigning a retreat. In World War II, Lithuania was hesitant to speak to Germany because Prussia had faced brutal defeats at the hands of him and Poland, but Germany did not seem to remember, to Lithuania's relief.

When Prussia is integrated with the Soviets, Lithuania tells Prussia he hates him and does not like being honest with him. After the partitions of the [[wikipedia:Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth|Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth]], Lithuania became Russia's subordinate. It is suggested that he was Russia's "favourite" and so is often the target of Russia's bullying. It is heavily implied that the deep scars covering his back were inflicted by Russia because he was the main target of his harsh treatment.

After WWI, Lithuania spent eleven years working at America's house. Russia visits at one point during Lithuania's outsourcing to tell America to take good care of him, because he is his possession. Lithuania had to return to Russia once the Great Depression started. In the epilogue of "Lithuania's Out-Sourcing", it's shown Russia was so upset about Lithuania temporarily leaving him that he overworked him to the point of passing out. Lithuania woke up on Russia's shoulder, horrified, but instead of retaliating cruelly, Russia was calm and asked Lithuania what his dreams were. Lithuania shared that his dreams were to be free in the rye fields, and then Russia smiled and confessed his dreams were to live in a warm place surrounded by sunflowers. Lithuania thought this was "strangely cute" and passed out on Russia again, and woke up to find Russia replaced by a panda bear.

In modern times, Lithuania is shown as sometimes being nervous around Russia, whose approach towards him seems rather unchanged. It is said Lithuania is "always in Russia's watch", and is shown to still be stalked by him. Russia states at the '''Meeting of the World''' that he would like to see a troubled Lithuania coming back to him in tears.

A comic from Volume 3 of the manga shows that the two of them met as small children while Russia was under the [[wikipedia:Tatars|Tatar's]] rule. Russia declared that he would be a large powerful country one day, and then they could be friends. Lithuania first briefly appears at the meeting in [[Episode 01]], as Russia states that he only wants to see him come running back to him with a troubled face.

He shows up later on in [[Episode 17: America's Cleaning Of The Storage, Part 1]], which marks his first formal appearance in the anime and his first speaking part.

His character design was relatively unchanged in the anime adaptation, aside from his green eyes being changed to a shade of blue and his hair color lightened slightly. In ''The Beautiful World'', the colors were corrected to match the manga's scheme.
