A little background info on the account name:

The ''San Juan'' was a named narrow guage passenger train in the United States that ran between Alamosa, Colorado and Durango, Colorado, via Antonito, CO, and Chama, New Mexico. The train operated between 1937 and 1951, and at one point was the only running daily narrow gauge passenger train running on a daily schedule, the railroad that owned this train was the Denver and Rio Grande Western. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denver_and_Rio_Grande_Western_Railroad]

I chose the name because I am into trains (don't judge), and because my Great-grandfather was a conductor for this train.

For some reason it bothers me that Matthew's info page shows only a picture of him while he is in his teens. Isn't it more appropriate to show him like he is normaly, as an adult? [[User:HotNeonFuzz|HotNeonFuzz]] 23:24, December 22, 2009 (UTC)
* If you have a Himaruya drawing of him that's well-detailed and proper size, you can try uploading it here. That's the beauty of the wiki: anyone can edit it. [[User:The Spie|The Spie]] 23:29, December 22, 2009 (UTC)

==Question on Matthew's Rant==

In what strip does Matthew yell at Alfred for all the trouble he's caused him? This is for my own personal reference. Thanks! [[User:CathyFer|CathyFer]] 03:38, January 9, 2010 (UTC)
:It's in one of the "Fly, Canada-san, Fly!" strips. == Age ==

So we don't know how old mattie is but if we go by country ages than mattie is 143 ((I think)) and Alfred is 243((Not good with age correct me if I'm wrong)) So that would mean Alfred is the older brother Right

Not so much. Those "country ages" are ages of independence, not of birth. [[Special:Contributions/69.166.47.143|69.166.47.143]] 10:06, September 11, 2010 (UTC)

'''Canada '''(カナダ, ''Kanada'')''' '''is a supporting character in the series '''Hetalia: Axis Powers'''. Between 2007 and 2008, Himaruya gave out human names to some of the characters and he received the name '''[[Human names#Canada|Matthew Williams]]''' (マシュー・ウィリアムズ, ''Mashū Wiriamuzu'').<ref name="Name"/>

==Attributes==
[[File:CanadaChibi.png|thumb|left|160px|A 'chibi' version of Canada.]]
===Appearance===
His hair is wavy, and depicted at times as being two-toned: a lighter blond on top, with more of an orange (or darker blond) shade on the bottom and tips. He has violet eyes, though they have also been colored blue in some official art. At least one figurine depicts him with completely orange hair. He also sports a curly ahoge off the top of his head.

Canada wears a heavy tan winter coat and pants as his military uniform, though when he is dressed casually, he is usually shown wearing a hoodie (sometimes depicted with the Canadian flag emblem on it), and a pair of jeans. Like his brother, Canada wears glasses, though he also sports a pair of goggles on his head at times (such as when wearing his uniform).

Although often drawn as shorter in fanart, official art makes it clear that he is either the same height/build as his brother, or very close to it.

===Personality and Interests===
In contrast to [[America|his brother]], Canada is calm, shy, sensitive, and hates fighting<ref name="Vol2Profile"/> (But, it is said that he is a very strong fighter). Despite this, he is often mistaken for his brother and has found himself in trouble for incidents that America has caused. When he is not being mistaken for his brother, other nations tend to forget that he exists.<ref name="cnd">{{Cite web|url=http://www.geocities.jp/himaruya/cnd.html|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|title=飛び越せ！カナダさん|accessdate=September 21, 2012|trans_title=Fly, Canada-san, fly!}}</ref> He is also passive aggressive and was once able to make America cry by arguing with him for over three hours and pointing out every single one of his faults.<ref name="cnd"/> It is also implied in a chapter he loves maple syrup as he is shown offering America some for his coffee. According to Himaruya, he's always been a rather good tactician, and this was displayed in a comic set during the Revolutionary War in which Canada assisted England, whose letters to America were normally not accepted, by writing on a note attached to the letter, "there are snacks inside," strongly tempting America to accept and open the letter.<ref>{{cite web|title=クリスマスの 6ページ|url=http://www.geocities.jp/himaruya/2011_12_6.html|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|date=December 2011|accessdate=December 21, 2012}}</ref> Canada also likes to play ice hockey and lacrosse, and drives a tractor on his days off.<ref>{{cite web|title=びくぶる|url=http://himaruya.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-1598.html|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|date=November 13, 2014|accessdate=November 14, 2014|trans_title=Trembling Trio}}</ref>

He also has a pet bear named [[Creatures_of_Hetalia#Kumajirou|Kumajirou]], who, unfortunately, always forgets Canada's name. In return, Canada always forgets Kumajirou's name as well.<ref name="cnd"/>

==Relationships==
===America===
''Main Article: [[America]]''

The two brothers grew up separately as children, until [[England]] eventually took Canada on a trip to meet America, who wound up becoming bored with him and forgetting him shortly into their first meeting.<ref name="cnd"/> While they are later shown to have gotten along quite well, Canada could not match America's rapid growth and development and he was not able to mature at the same time as his brother, causing him to remain a child while America began to reach his adolescence.<ref name="world stars chapter 180">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[180話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/erFQoM4gZbIR0HEY/index.html|date=June 17, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=June 19, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 180}}</ref> A rift occurred between the two after Canada refused to join America's side during the American Revolution.<ref name="world stars chapter 181">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[181話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/gFvfcU9iKRf6LjAz/index.html|date=June 20, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=July 13, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 181}}</ref> In the years that followed their own relationships with England caused their relationship to be tense.<ref name="world stars chapter 197">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[197話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/TmPNvWfrOQUhVohD/index.html|date=August 15, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=August 23, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 197}}</ref> During the War of 1812, Canada felt conflicted fighting America, but did so to do his best for England.<ref name="world stars chapter 199"/> Although their relations improved later on, Canada thought it would be too difficult to speak to America, and used England as his "speaker," which only baffled America.<ref name="world stars chapter 182">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[182話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/jM8Rsv8Z1UbXQBAe/index.html|date=June 24, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=July 13, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 182}}</ref>

In their adulthood and in most cases of the ''Axis Powers'' series, America is the source of Canada's constant troubles, due to the fact that people get their identities mixed up; he is blamed for fights that America started or is spoken to as America.<ref name="cnd"/> However, during an argument, Canada was able to reduce him to tears when he went on a 3-hour rant about all of his flaws.<ref name="cnd"/> Despite this, the two seem to have a healthy relationship, as their arguing and America's frequent forgetting of him can merely come off as sibling rivalry. America tends to visit his house on occasion and is seen to be the one Canada spends the most time with.

In ''World☆Stars'', When America catches Canada behaving out of character, he tells him he was fine just the way he is, a statement which Canada takes offense to. While Canada envies America's image, believing him to be indifferent to his pain, America walks away believing that "he doesn't know how blessed he is" to have a rare personality to get along with everyone and not understanding why he would want to change it.<ref name="world stars chapter 177">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[177話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/iEXt3QfLnW9YuwZN/index.html|date=June 6, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=June 14, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 177}}</ref> America is also found to be taken aback that Canada knows so much about his politics and entertainment, but in truth, he knows little about Canada's.<ref name="world stars chapter 179">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[179話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/TrN9WvsPPftAcDFn/index.html|date=June 13, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=June 14, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 179}}</ref>

America is also shown to be jealous of the fact that Canada simply asked Britain for his independence, and thinks that Canada is not ready for it. When they both confront each other, America and Canada seem to be insulting one another about it, but it is revealed that was all in their head, and America congratulates Canada. <ref name="world stars chapter 214">{{cite web|title=http://www.hetarchive.net/scanlations/worldstars.php?chapter214}}</ref>

===Cuba===
''Main Article: [[Cuba]]''

Cuba initially mistook Canada for America and attacked him. He later apologized with a peace offering of ice cream and an invite to his place. When Canada arrived, however, Cuba once again mistook him for his brother.<ref name="cnd"/>

During the Christmas 2010 event, Cuba was the one to call Canada, warning him of the disappearance of countries and suggesting that they stick together. Later on Canada, instead of searching for the missing nations, decides to take pictures of himself with Cuba and Kumajirou in silly positions.<ref name="Christmas 2010 Page 8">{{cite web|title=メリークリスマス！！ Page 8|url=http://www.geocities.jp/himaruya/xmas20118.html|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=June 19, 2016}}</ref> The two get along well, though Cuba still confuses Canada with America.

===England/UK/Britain===
''Main Article: [[England]]''

England gained Canada as his own territory after a tough battle with France, and tells him that he would be his family from now on. Excited that someone was looking at and talking to him, Canada promises to be loyal and do his best for England.<ref name="world stars chapter 192">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[192話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/s6Ao3YaarJenuBy4/index.html|date=July 29, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=August 23, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 192}}</ref> During the American Revolution, Canada was unable to be America's ally because he was unwilling to take sides and turn against England, which angered America, believing he liked him too much.<ref name="world stars chapter 181"/> When England fell gravely ill after losing to America and losing much of his support from other European countries, Canada was shown to be his caretaker, and England was extremely grateful for his presence and loyalty.<ref name="world stars chapter 195">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[195話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/Ja6Fb7uxDNLDifjS/index.html|date=August 8, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=August 23, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 195}}</ref> Canada's loyalty was so strong that it allowed him to fight on England's side against his brother with little conflict.<ref name="world stars chapter 199"/> Later on, Canada would use England as his speaker and negotiator when talking to America, due to his belief that their relations were not strong enough and he would not be able to approach America so easily.<ref name="world stars chapter 182"/>

===France===
''Main Article: [[France]]''

France was the one who originally held authority of Canada and his house before losing it to England, but the extent of their relationship during the time is not revealed. However, when England first meets Canada, he notes that his hair looked liked it was inherited from France.<ref name="world stars chapter 192"/>

In ''World☆Stars'', Seychelles is shown to remember him and his place in the G8.<ref name="world stars chapter 175">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[175話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/EoCfwSU5Vbg5MOZ9/index.html|date=May 30, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=June 14, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 175}}</ref> This makes Canada excited, and he decides to make a large and lavish "impact" to thank her and make sure she always remembers him. ===Anime===

[[File:CanadaTBW.png|200px|left|thumb|Canada in ''Gakuen Hetalia: Go Forth! Newspaper Club!! Second Half''.]]

Canada and Kumajirou appear in [[Episode 19]], at an Allied Forces meeting. But due to his "invisibility effect", the other Allies do not realize that he's there with them.

His design was slightly altered for the first four seasons of the anime, with his violet eyes changed to a blue, and the gradient effect of his hair removed. His hair is drawn slightly shorter and straighter as well. Both Canada's hair and eyes are a darker shade than his brother's. His casual hoodie, often assumed to be red (though colored light green in one official picture), is also colored teal. In ''Hetalia: The Beautiful World'', his hair is changed to be a regular blond color, while his eyes became a light violet.

He is voiced by [[Katsuyuki Konishi]], who also voices America in the anime. In an interview with ''PASH'' magazine, Konishi said that he played Canada's voice as very quiet and "barely above a whisper", in contrast to the louder brother. His English voice actor, [[Eric Vale]], also voices America and plays Canada's voice in much the same way.

==Trivia==
*His birthday, '''July 1st''', corresponds to the national holiday of [[wikipedia:Canada Day|Canada Day]], when Canada first became independent on July 1st, 1867,<ref name="Vol2Profile"/> though full independence was not gained until April 17, 1982.
*It is a source of debate among fans as to whether it is America or Canada that is the older of the two brothers (with Hidekaz Himaruya having not confirmed a set age difference between the two). A common fanon assumption is that the two are twins, due to their similarities and the fact that Canada is easily mistaken for America (due to having the same face), though the two do not share the same day of birth. Supporters of this theory point out the nations' birthdays merely refer to their date of independence or unification, and that a "nation" may not have an official birthday in the same sense as humans. However, years later in the serialization of World Stars, this is finally addressed, with England saying he did not know, and quickly decides it was whoever learned the alphabet first. This statement singles out Canada as "the oldest,"<ref name="world stars chapter 199">{{cite web|title=<nowiki>[199話]</nowiki>ヘタリア World☆Stars|url=http://www.shonenjump.com/p/sp/hetalia/erFQoM4gZbIR0HEY/index.html|date=August 22, 2016|last=Himaruya|first=Hidekaz|accessdate=August 23, 2016|transtitle=Hetalia World☆Stars Chapter 199}}</ref> but note that it is still not entirely confirmed.
*Canada was one of the Allied Forces during the second world war, which would bring the total of Allied powers in the story to six. Canada was the third strongest western power, and contributed a lot in the war, but being under so much British influence much of Canada's efforts were considered British efforts. This can be considered a contribution to Canada's invisibility. This could also explain why Canada is not often seen amongst the others when the Allies are acting together.
