China (中国, Chūgoku) is a main character in the series Hetalia: Axis Powers. He is part of the Allied Forces. Between 2007 and early 2008, Himaruya gave human names to some of the characters and he received the name Wang Yao (王耀, Wanyao or Ouyou, 王耀, Wáng Yào).

Appearance
China has dark hair tied back into a ponytail and is often shown wearing a green Chinese military uniform with a red armband with a white star on it. The shade of green varies, however it's generally deep green, though it was once colored tan. In other instances, he wears a green mandarin jacket with yellow pants, or a red one with white pants as shown in the Hetalia trading card game. Seeing him "will make you say he's an old man or a hermit or something" though he looks young.

He has a scar on his back, having been attacked by Japan when they were younger, and a panda-shaped birthmark above his buttocks.

Over time, Himaruya said that China's design changed the least, though his bangs may have changed in volume a little. Himaruya's said that he's easier to draw than other characters, with a different easiness than England. He's also added that his expressions are easy to change.

Personality and Interests
Apparently one of the oldest nations, China lives through a tough life surrounded by mysterious things. He happens to be extremely superstitious, but not at all religious. He loves good luck and fortune. China tries to act as an older brother to the other Asian nations, but fails to be treated as one. He's also said to have many disciples, said to be his provinces, but no authority over them, either. When they begin to fight and refuse to work together, he doesn't appear to even try to reconcile them. Somewhat like America, he likes to be in charge or have what he wants. He tends to end his sentences with the sound "-aru" (a Japanese stereotype of Chinese accents), though sometimes he ends them with "-ahen" (opium) when conversing with England. He has a companion named "Shinatty-chan", an old man in a Hello Kitty knockoff costume.

China is shown to be a lover of cuisine, even being part of the Gourmet Food Club with France and Turkey in the Gakuen Hetalia strips, and is said to nag if food has a certain pattern of tastes. On one occasion in the WWII-set strips, he winds up arriving late to a meeting and explains that he always puts food as his first priority.

He's said to hate losing and be patronizing, and he's only recently completely changed his halfhearted ways and begun to put serious effort into everything. He has a lot of mysterious, "secret" medicines at his house, though he's not sure of what their ingredients are, and tries to sell them to nations he feels are in need of them. Even in Hetalia Fantasia he's shown to be a decent businessman, though he doesn't have any problem with taking advantage of customers such as Prussia when he sold him a panda that he claimed would make him happy as a prank on April Fools.

China appears to have a love of cute things, particularly cartoon characters, Hello Kitty, and pandas, and he is frequently seen carrying one. He is also very artistic, as he is skilled at not only painting beautiful human beings full-scale, but also on something as small as a strand of hair (as seen in a strip in the web-comic); his artistic abilities don't, however, apply across the board, as his anime art is quite poor compared to Japan's and Korea's.

Overall he appears to be a cheerful character, though he can occasionally slip into moments of melancholy when reflecting on how much the world has changed in all the years he's been around. He's also been shown to be easily annoyed and prone to snapping, particularly when it comes to Korea.

In the Hetalia Fantasia CD he said that he, like all Chinese people, isn't one to waste a second of time. According to Russia, however, he often takes naps in the sun in his garden, does "some weird dance" (which China later clarified to have been tai chi) in the morning, and he himself said that he would sleep and eat all day on a holiday. In addition, he said that his specialty was online games. He also seems fairly gullible, as he said that, with the money he was earning, he would buy some products off of one of America's "promotional things".

Relationships
Hong Kong
Main Article: Hong Kong

Little has been revealed about their relationship. Hong Kong was raised by China before he became British territory. The two were eventually reunited when England's control ceased. In The Summary of the Plot until Now, China is seen telling Hong Kong to stop drawing explicit art, saying that he will have to mosaic it all out. Hong Kong replies, "I'm kinda sorry. And I won't do it again. Maybe." Also, Hong Kong refers China as teacher (sensei).

Japan
Main Article: Japan

After discovering the new nation (who appeared to be a child all on his own), China took him in and raised him as a younger brother, though Japan denied being related to him when asked about it. Japan eventually wound up betraying China when he decided to initiate a war, and attacked him with a katana (leaving a scar on his back). Since that war, the two remained on opposing sides as enemies, and China became distressed as to how war changed his "brother".

Korea
Main Article: Korea

China is constantly annoyed by Korea's claims that he invented others' work, and his claim that both him and Japan should consider him to be their older brother. Korea also happens to have an obsession with China, wanting to be acknowledged by him. He also once showed the belief that China's breasts belonged to him like Japan's.

Russia
Main Article: Russia

Despite the close relationship the two have had throughout their history, China is very suspicious and fearful of his northern neighbor, especially after the Sino-Soviet Split. In return, Russia has been shown to stalk China, especially when disguised in a panda suit, and takes a special interest in him.

Taiwan
Main Article: Taiwan

Little has been revealed about their relationship. In Asian and Western Festivals, Taiwan, like Hong Kong, refers to China as 'teacher.' However, she also talks back to him frequently and does not mind his bossiness.

Appearances
Anime
China first appears in Episode 01, at the world meeting. As the others argue, he attempts to break up the fight by offering them snacks (that they refuse).

China's raising of Japan is spotlighted in Episode 16, which details their past history, though the betrayal aspect was left out of the anime adaptation.

Though his hair tends to be colored black in most artwork for the manga, China's character design in the anime gives him ash brown hair, as well as adding haircurls to his ponytail.

Trivia
*In his earliest webcomic profile, China was represented by the Guomindang flag of China. In his profiles from 2007 and on, Hidekaz Himaruya quickly switched the flag out for the People's Republic Of China one. However, the historically accurate flag for the WWII-set strips would be the flag for the Republic Of China (later used for Taiwan).
*His original birthday (October 10th) corresponded with the date of formation of the Republic Of China. However, in later profiles, his birthday was stated as "Unknown". In a Chinese printing of volume 2, his birthday is given as October 1st (the formation of the People's Republic Of China), though the same printing is controversial for changing Taiwan's profile to state that she is a "part of China" (the stance that both Republics of China take).
*He is immortal, which explains his great age of 4000 years. Some Chinese fans will modify his age to 5000, as it is considered to be a more accurate age for "China".
*A rejected design for China showed that Himaruya originally considered having him wear glasses. One version of this early design appears in a scan of a notebook page featuring it along with an early male Korea and a Thailand. In the design, China also wears his hair down. A second doodle of the rejected concept would later appear in the special edition booklet for volume 3, where he was depicted with short hair and the glasses. In notes, Himaruya wrote that the character was originally supposed to be calmer and cruel, as well as appearing to be older, however he decided to make him cuter after meeting many Chinese people in his school and neighborhood, though he noted that many mistake him for a girl now.
*In volume 4 it was revealed that he is a member of the Academy Gourmet Food Club along with France and Turkey. In the same scene of this colored chapter, a graphic hue edit or lighting error used to accentuate the punchline of this scene accidentally discolored these three characters' uniform pants to an odd shade of green, opening a door for some fan confusion.
*At the request of a fan("why doesn't China cut his hair" in a suggesting manner,) Himaruya once drew China with short hair. In the drawing, he was given a small ahoge like America's, and also appeared to wear his bomber jacket. China appeared to be somewhat uncomfortable.

Attributes
Appearance
France has shoulder-length blond hair and blue eyes, and has a slight amount of facial hair which he believes makes him look like a "big brother" (it is said to represent the Gorges du Tarn, or Tarn Gorges) that he'd been growing since the late 18th century. At times his eyes are violet and, in more recent art, he's often depicted as a brunette. He wears a long blue coat and matching capelet, with red pants and brown boots. He is often depicted with a rose, which is also used to censor his genitals in his nude scenes.

When France initially appeared in the webcomic, his hair was drawn shorter and less wavy, but was drawn longer over time as the art style changed and evolved. Initially his hair was parted in the middle and fell at the sides of his face, however Himaruya changed his bangs in Volume 5, so that his hair is now parted on the left with his right bang falling into his face somewhat.. He also originally wore white spats over his boots, a detail that was dropped in later artwork.

Himaruya has mentioned that he has a rather nice body though he's not at all macho, instead being rather lanky but with muscles "in the right places."

Personality and Interests
France was once a large nation, but after Napoleon Bonaparte had died, he was no longer good at war and instead attracted tourists to his country with his wine. A great cook who is called the nation of arts and a lover of everything beautiful, he has an intense rivalry with England and loves to argue with him over trivial topics. While he used to hate Germany, lately they've been spending a lot of time together. His hobbies are manipulation activities, agriculture, fashion design, sketching, singing, and telephones, as well as wandering around the art museums and fashion boutiques of Paris. He likes places that are a little odd or chic.

France often seems infatuated with most of the nations and is known to make blatant sexual comments at every opportunity and is very affectionate, often shown streaking or touching other nations inappropriately. However, he believes love is not something to be forced on others and, if given a firm no, will usually avoid touching or stripping, and he will stop if what he's doing isn't enjoyed. He is attracted to beautiful things, which include men and women of any age (supported by statements such as "Sure, I'll settle for boys! Boys are the best!" and "This big brother here loves pure and innocent children like you." in response to a fan not knowing the meaning of the term "tachi") and maybe even some non-human beings. He said "be gentle to the ladies and be gentle to the earth" is his motto. He's admitted to being "the dandiest among the dandies." He loves himself so much that he does not bother to remember English and considers French the "language of love." In addition, he has referred to the others as insignificant characters.

France actually seems to be rather responsible and sometimes appropriately fits his "big brother" role. In a scrapped strip, because of America's young age(or, rather, the age he appears) he didn't allow him to drink alcohol, even when he begged(in contrast to England who took him out to do so, though it was in order to get information out of him.)

He likes men who have exquisite bodies and give him a good impression, and has no preference in their personalities, so long as they are not like England. He said he would like cool but passionate women, and might latch on best to someone who is good at singing. He also mentioned, in response to that the French supposedly fall in love due to other's body odors, that a faint, flowery scent could have him curled up in pleasure. In response to another fan suggesting their lack of will to stand near him because of his overbearing scent, he stated that he only wore a little perfume.

He stated that he's afraid of computers, Germany (and that he supposedly hates Germans in general, despite that he seems to get along with both brothers as of recent), Russia, Switzerland, whenever England is angry, and possibly Turkey. He stated this through a response to a fan, thus over the computer, and that doing so was bad enough for him. It seems that gardening relaxes him, and that he isn't intimidated by other technologies, as he claimed to be playing Bokosuka, a video game, with Germany and England. However, he was seen using a laptop in a strip where he said he wanted to go sightseeing in England and asked him to recommend hotels, so it's unknown if his cyberphobia is retconned or if he simply used the computer out of necessity.

He's referenced his old age several times, saying things like how his waist is always creaking, his back hurts, and that he had to surrender to sleep early in the day. Despite this, he gets upset when said that he's a grandpa as opposed to a big brother, and claims he is still young.

According to Volume 4, he holds the belief that those who have been "toyed with by history" are always reborn, but into a normal life and get to live regular, happy lives. He felt this was confirmed when he met a girl named Lisa who had come to France for her birthday whom he believed to be the reincarnation of Joan of Arc.

Relationships
America
Main Article: America

France fought over his rival England for ownership of a baby America. Despite losing the battle, it seems that France has nothing against him, seeming to treat America like a younger brother at times.
When America went on a diet in Supersize You, he asked France for a suggestion, however, whatever was said was censored out; later in the Hetalia Fantasia 2 C.D., France feels remorse for telling America that a snack diet was a great way to lose weight. This comes after he stumbles into a dungeon area he believes America based off of the Palace of Versailles, and he becomes very emotional. After a lot of hard work on his part, France presented America with a dismembered Statue of Liberty, celebrating America's 100th year of official independence. In Independence Day, France's gift was a censored object along with champagne, to which America asked him not to show such things in public.
France has offered to feed America his food instead of England's cooking multiple times, once becoming very depressed when a young America stated that both France's and England's cooking were "sweet and tasty". In the strip America's Brewster F2A Buffalo France refuses to offer a depressed America a drink after he has a horrible day, stating that he is still a child.

Austria
Main Article: Austria

Not much is known about these two's relationship, although in Big Brother France And The Frying Pan! France is seen outside Austria's window, ranting about how much he desires him, and talking about how good looking and talented Austria is. The Christmas Rampage 2007 strips show France tricking Austria into stripping down in order to get Hungary a hat, yet this may have only been to make Prussia feel better. In A Kind of Aristocratic Comic, photos from France's camera revealed France had been stalking Austria (although France claimed that England had made him do espionage, this is probably a lie, as he had been taking seemingly useless photos of Austria). In The Austrian Anschluss it is explained that France's and Austria's relationship was abysmal at the time of Austria's annexation, and that Austria had been at about every anti-France alliance held.

England/UK/Britain
Main Article: England

Despite both being members of the Allied forces, England and France have a deep-rooted historical rivalry between them. While they can be seen to constantly argue with each other over the littlest things (like language and culture), they appear to have a level of respect for each other and are quick to team up with each other if a third party should enter the argument. France even tried to marry England to save his country once, though neither of them really wanted it. In strips focusing on England's childhood, he is often shown being picked on by a pre-teen France, who on one occassion, scoffs at him for not growing his hair long - and when England's long hair turns out a mess, France teases him by saying he'll cut it into a "cool" style - by cutting it back to the style he had before. In Crossing Through the Year 1000, the two younger countries are fooled into believing that the world will soon be over, and England agrees to let France pretend to have conquered him, since it is only for a little while. They later reminisce about their childhood when Japan makes the same mistake.

Germany
Main Article: Germany

The state of their relationship depends on the specified time period however, generally, like England, Germany and France have a history of being one another's enemies, and as such the two don't seem to get along. In Let's Think About The G8 members, when Germany suggested France be removed from the group, he argued that they had actually been getting along recently. In Kusogame the two and America went to a maid cafe in Japan together. Both are set in the present day. During his April Fools sitejacking, he seemed to know a fair amount about him, especially that he, like Italy, often ran around naked, thus he needed a different idea of what to do to him as he had been stripping the others (in the end he forced him into a maid cosplay and cat ears.)

Italy
Main Article: Italy

France grew up with a small Chibitalia, but after Chibitalia returned from spending time with Roman Empire, France only wanted to control him. Italy refers to France as "France nii-chan" in strips set in both the past and present. Once Italy had grown into a teenager, he visited France again, resulting in the older man suddenly becoming enthusiastically attracted to him. During the visit, Italy saw the word "intercourse" in a book and asked him what the definition was. France replied by saying that intercourse is something you do with someone you like, then proceeded to ask "So Italy, do you like me?" (This was changed in the anime to France using body language to express the meaning of intercourse.) France seems to have a soft spot for Italy, becoming frantic when England suggests they spread rumours about Italy and responding with "I know he's kind of dumb, and he's weak and useless, but he's not a bad guy..." He then proceeds to break down in tears, causing England to note that France, while always insulting Germany, never really brings himself to badmouth Italy.

Monaco
Main Article: Monaco

Monaco acts as a younger sister figure to France and is solely dependent on him for military strength, as well as intervention in other affairs. Due to this, Monaco often accepts his various requests.

Seychelles
Main Article: Seychelles

In the Gakuen Hetalia universe, it is revealed (via flashback) that he helped raise her as a child, while in the present day he carries an affection for her and attempts to undress her, much to her shock and embarrassment, apparently to see what her body has become like.

Their relationship in the mainstream Hetalia universe has not been mentioned, outside of France appearing with her in Shipwrecked and an illustration in Christmas Rampage 2007, which depicts him groping Seychelles.

Spain
Main Article: Spain

The two get along rather well, having grown up and fought in wars together, though Spain remains oblivious to France's more perverted tendencies and cannot see why Romano hates him. It is said in production notes by Himaruya that their relationship is actually undesirable, yet the two remain inseparable. Recently, it seems Spain is aware that France is a bad influence on him, calling him "despicable" before defeating him in The Battle of Garigliano with the help of his pet bull. France first appears at the world meeting in Episode 01, opting to disagree with both America and England in their argument.

After being left out of the second Allied Forces meeting in Episode 10, France reflects on his history of past "victories", insisting that he was successful a long time ago.

Trivia
*His birthdate (July 14th) corresponds with the date of the French national holiday known as Bastille Day, a celebration of the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille.
*In notes included in the special edition booklet for Hetalia: Axis Powers volume 3, Himaruya stated that France was originally meant to look more middle-aged, and that he was intended to have a completely suave personality. The "older", shorter-haired design could be seen in early chapters of the webcomic, but faded as the style changed.
*Because of England and America's inability to recognize and fear of him, it has been hinted that an abruptly awoken France is not a pleasant sight, and that he may be a sleepwalker.
*France shares both Japanese and English voice actors, Masaya Onosaka and J. Michael Tatum respectively, with Issac Dian, a character from the anime Baccano! He also shares J. Michael Tatum as an English voice actor with Sebastian Michealis from Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler.
*In volume 4 it was revealed that he is a member of the Academy Gourmet Food Club along with Turkey and China. In the same scene of this colored chapter, a graphic hue edit or lighting error used to accentuate the punchline of this scene accidentally discolored these three characters' uniform pants to an odd shade of green, opening a door for some fan confusion.

England (イギリス, Igirisu) is a main character in the anime and manga series Hetalia: Axis Powers. He represents both the United Kingdom and England, and is part of the Allied Forces. The English dub refers to him as Britain, a shortened and often informal way to refer to the United Kingdom, though it more accurately refers to the Island of Great Britain. Between 2007 and 2008, Himaruya gave out human names to some of the characters and he received the name Arthur Kirkland (アーサー・カークランド, Āsā Kākurando).

Attributes
Appearance
England has messy, short blond hair and lime-green eyes. According to France, he's rather slender. In World War II, he dresses in a green military uniform. Himaruya has stated that he dresses smart casual most of the time, and like a punk when he's out for fun. His eyebrows are very thick and prominent and usually dark, despite that he apparently trims them. They are a trait that is shared by his younger brother Sealand, as well as Australia, Hong Kong, and Wy. He also happens to be the same height as France.

In the original manga, his hair seemed to be golden blond, but it is bright yellow in the anime. The anime also made his eyebrows bigger. Himaruya mentions that his eyebrows were cursed by something to be like this.

Personality and Interests
England is a fanciful, blunt, obstinate former pirate who used to torment Spain. In modern times he claims to be a gentleman, however he is cynical, sharp-tongued, prone to rough speech and yearns for the golden years. He often uses British vocabulary, such as 'bloody' and 'git'. He is noted for being horrible at cooking which has caused America, his former charge, to have "bad" taste in food. England is also, apparently, the "king of losing things", and France has described him as "somehow extremely useless when it comes to matters not pertaining to himself or America". He can be described as "spacey" because of his strong belief in magic, spirits, fairies, and various other fantasy-related creatures. He has the ability to do many spells and curses, and can also summon demons and other magical creatures. He has the ability to communicate with supernatural beings, and is not limited to creatures from his homeland, being able to interact with various youkai and spirits from Japanese folklore. He also happens to have fantasy friends, such as a flying bunny, unicorns, fairies, gnomes, and Captain Hook, but oddly enough he did not believe in Santa Claus until Finland came and brought them presents. Despite this, England often ridicules America's belief in aliens and Tony. According to the author's notes, England's interests include: embroidery, craftsmanship, literature, rock music, and giving scathing criticisms to America's movies.
He appears to be sharp-witted and surprisingly creative, although he seems to have rather bad luck. According to the author, he is rarely afraid of anything, and is rather interested in ghost stories, especially if he can use them to startle America. He also seems to be very stubborn and strong-willed, and does not easily succumb to stress or pressure. He is shown to be startlingly mature at times, and is very friendly with young or cute people and magical creatures. He also has a quite strong sense of responsibility, and has been seen scolding France and America when they don't take things seriously. In some recent notes, the author has stated that England has a very rich and unlimited personality, and that he can't decide whether England is a serious person or not.

Because of his status as an island nation, England is pretty distant and prefers to work alone. Perhaps because of this, he does not know how to express himself, leading to others often misunderstanding him. He is also depicted as being self-deprecating or tsundere. For example, despite his generally harsh behaviour, he is definitely stated to have a softer side, and seems to genuinely care for other nations. This is illustrated by the fact that he likes giving them advice, yet specifically mentions that he "does not do it because he's worried about them". Despite all this, he highly values his country's pride, and sometimes comes over as very arrogant. Despite his cynical, realistic view on the world, he is said to be a romanticist. When drunk, he suddenly becomes very nostalgic, and the next morning, he'll pretend that nothing has happened. Also, every year when the Fourth of July comes around, his condition collapses.

According to a blog post, the island nation and former pirate may not be able to swim. This would be a reference to English people in movies, and possibly to that, historically, many pirates could not swim.

Relationships
America
Main Article: America

America was discovered as a small child by Finland and Sweden. England and France were told about his existence by Finland, and proceeded to fight over who would be the child's older brother, though America chose England after the latter began to cry because he could not offer anything that compared to France's cooking. England cared for America as his "little brother" and visited America's home whenever he found the time, though he always needed to return to Europe after his visits. Only America was capable of liking or tolerating England's terrible cooking, resulting in England being delighted and America adopting the same "tasteless-ness." He also provided America with toys and clothes and was shown to be very affectionate to him, even letting America sleep in his bed when the latter couldn't sleep after reading horror stories. One day, when England came for a visit, he was surprised to find out that America had grown from a child into a teen and had become increasingly independent, no longer needing to rely on England.

Soon after, the Revolutionary War broke out and America fought England for his freedom and right to be his own nation. Near the end of the war, England, unable to shoot America when he had the opportunity, surrendered and allowed him be independent. While England cried in front of him, America stated "You used to be so...great."

This memory always makes England upset; when drunk, he is known for cursing America for leaving him (England once stated that 'someone left him heartbroken' for centuries, and it is assumed he refers to America), especially when the Fourth of July, or America's "birthday", arrives. The Revolutionary War caused a rift between the two and they constantly bicker and have disagreements. However, they are hinted as to truly care for each other.

France
Main Article: France

Despite the fact that both are members of the Allied forces, England and France have a deep-rooted historical rivalry. While they often have petty disagreements, they appear to respect each other and are quick to team up if a third party enters their argument. France once tried to marry England to save his country, even though neither of them really wanted it. In strips focusing on England's childhood, he is often picked on by a pre-teen France. On one occasion, he scoffs at England for not growing out his hair, but when England does let his hair grow, it turns into a mess; France teases him, saying he'll cut it into a "cool" style, cutting it the same way France keeps his hair. England refuses saying that he does not want to be mistaken for him. Then, France cuts it back to its original style, saying that the only style that would suit him would be a boring one. In Crossing Through the Year 1000, the two younger countries are fooled into believing that the world will end soon, and England agrees to let France pretend to have conquered him, since it is only for a little while. They later reminisce about their childhood when Japan makes the same mistake.

Japan
Main Article: Japan

When England finally decided to look out for friends, he thought Japan as a candidate. But Japan's boss wanted an alliance with Russia instead, leaving England very upset. Before England was about to give up and isolate himself once again, Japan came and said they could have an alliance and be lonely together, instead of obeying his boss.

The two are often shown enjoying each other's company.

Prussia
Main Article: Prussia

At the end of the Seven Years' War, England sent a letter to Prussia to announce their alliance, due to wanting to fight against France.

In Prussia's blog at the April Fool's '09 event on Kitayume, Prussia tried out England's cooking as a request (much to England's delight), but found that even Prussia couldn't stomach it and he passed out for a while, leading the other nations to believe he had died. England then vowed to make Prussia and everyone else acknowledge his cooking skills the "next time".

Russia
Main Article: Russia

It appears that whenever England tries summoning demons, he always ends up summoning Russia instead. Russia seems to hold some kind of grudge towards England, so the air between them isn't pleasant, as he's said that England always gets in his way.

Sealand
Main Article: Sealand

Sealand is England's youngest brother, an abandoned naval fort who declared himself a nation at the end of WWII. The two always bicker because Sealand wants to be recognized as a full-fledged nation and often sneaks into conferences the other countries attend (such as the G8, in which Sealand pretended to be Canada). In This Kind of Sealand is OO, England has a nightmare about the earth around Sealand rising up, causing Sealand to become taller than him. Despite being called "Jerk England" and being promised that he will one day bow to him, England, though annoyed, does look out for Sealand.

Seychelles
Main Article: Seychelles

During their first meeting in the Gakuen Hetalia universe, England snaps a dog collar onto Seychelles and claims her as his colony. He uses her like a servant in the game, though they occasionally are able to get along. In one of Seychelles's appearances in the comic, she is shown to be angry at England.

Spain
Main Article: Spain

In the late-1500's, England, jealous of Spain, decided to use his pirates to dethrone Spain. Whenever Spain complained about it, England gave the false excuse that the pirates were giving him trouble as well. However, when Spain came back to protest one day, he saw England giving an award ceremony for the work of the privateers.

Spain was eventually beaten so badly he eventually had to give up his seat of power to England.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
It has been mentioned that England has brothers, one representing Scotland, and the others presumably Wales and Northern Ireland, whom hated him and used to drive him away with stones and arrows when he was a child, and even went as far as to mail him curses.

Appearances
Anime
England first appeared in Episode 01 where he disagreed with America's plan to stop global warming and later fighting with France before being stopped by Germany.

In the anime, his hair is a more vivid yellow shade of blond, rather than the paler blond used in the manga illustrations.

Trivia
*He is referred to as United Kingdom, or UK for short, in most merchandise and in his character design on the official anime website. In other instances, however, he is referred to as England, most notably in Gakuen Hetalia and the English-language preview for America's Cleaning of the Storage. The Japanese word Igirisu means Britain but is sometimes used to refer to England (normally rendered as Ingurando in katakana or eikoku in kanji) in colloquial speech. A note by Hidekaz Himaruya confirms that he would only be known as "England" to his brothers, while he would be known as "UK" to the others.
*The English dub refers to him as Britain. According to FUNimation, this was a request from the Japanese anime producers.

*Although he's always called Igirisu in the manga and anime, historically, he would be known as simply England up until the 18th century, when The Kingdom of Great Britain was formed, uniting both England and Scotland (the Act of Union of Wales and England had already taken place 1536-1543). In the early 19th century, Ireland was added, creating United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After Ireland split to declare itself independent in 1919, the Irish War of Independence waged until 1922, when it became the Irish Free State. Six of the 32 counties of Ireland (mostly from the province of Ulster where there was a great English/Scottish population) rejoined the UK while the other 26 counties formed the Republic of Ireland.
*A UK character is actually first seen at the end of Hetalia: Chapter 1, however, his design was not yet completely finalized. He appears as a short-haired man with a UK label on his shirt and with somewhat thinner eyebrows. Notes in the special booklet for the third volume of the published manga reveal that England was originally to have normal eyebrows, as well as have the appearance of a middle-aged man who dressed much younger. Himaruya decided to give him thicker eyebrows, as he liked the idea of a character having brows modeled after a Shiba Inu.
*He appears to be modeled after the character Hikone Kalom from Himaruya's other webcomic Barjona Bombers, though he is the exact opposite of Kalom in personality.
*Himaruya once stated that his eyebrows are actually trimmed, although they don't appear that way since they still remain thick in appearance. He has also stated that Ireland has thicker eyebrows, but with a "different feel" to them.
*England mentions in his version of Marukaite Chikyuu that "My tattoo really hurts, but it's a hot six-string!" (six-string meaning electric guitar). This may indicate he has a tattoo.
