Belgium (ベルギー, Berugī) is a minor character in the series Hetalia: Axis Powers.

Attributes
Appearance
She is a taller girl who has short and wavy blonde hair, held back with a ribbon headband (alternatively green or red, but also sometimes seen as being black) and almond eyes. In her profile sketch by Hidekaz Himaruya, she is shown wearing a military uniform like most of the other characters, but it has varied in appearances in the various illustrations that exist of it: In an early-full body picture, she was shown to wear gloves, her boots were high-heeled with visible laces, and her tie had an elaborate black design. In a super-deformed character sketch, her boots were simplified (with the heels and laces removed), and her tie was changed to a neckbow. However, in a later chibi design, the neckbow was changed back to a tie (with a somewhat different design than before) and her pants became breeches. The uniform's color remained unknown for some time as well, until an illustration in Comic Birz revealed it to be khaki.

When dressed for the "Meeting Of The World" in both the published manga and anime, she wears an aqua dress and lavender bolero (with a matching lavender headband).

In earlier-drawn sketches, Belgium was shown in a traditional European dress and wore a slightly different headband (with longer ribbon "tails"). Though her official hair color is blonde, a 2009 "chibi" headshot sketch depicted her with pale brown hair. In a 2010 chibi drawing of country's imports and exports, Belgium wears a green headband and has darkly colored hair.

Personality and Interests
It was revealed in Christmas Rampage '07 that she has two siblings, Netherlands and Luxembourg.

It is said that although she is mature and has a cheerful personality, she doesn't stand out much due to the people she is surrounded by. A note in a later character chart by Himaruya indicates that she speaks in a Shiga dialect. Earlier notes on the character describe her as a tsukkomi ("straight man") type, and state that she is often pushed around by her siblings.

In her profile in the third manga volume, she is described as being "a diligent, kind, meddlesome and friendly older sister! Although her features stand out, her clothes are simple and not very conspicuous!". And that she "Loves Gourmet and tasty snacks!" Also in a separate translation it is stated that she is "a cheerful, good-natured, but slightly nosy older sister. And scary when she's mad!"

In the Christmas 2010 event it was shown she has quite the tolerance for nudity (possibly a reference to that France and Germany are her neighbors, as well as that she, herself, is partially French). When attacked by the shadow at her house, she gave him her own scarf as a gift and out of concern for him in the cold, disregarding the strange aura he was radiating.

Relationships
Netherlands
Main article: Netherlands

The two siblings are said to be on difficult terms with each other and find it hard to get along. When both were under the control of Spain, Netherlands fought to become independent and went to war with his sister, as she remained with Spain.

He later attempted to reconcile with her to form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but their differences were too great and she decided to declare her independence from him.

South Italy (Romano)
Main article: South Italy

As a child, South Italy had a crush on the older Belgium though he found himself unable to kiss her or tell her how he actually felt (though Belgium revealed she was only teasing him and felt bad for it). In Boss CD, when they make churros, Romano says that he will get 80% of them, while Spain and Belgium get 10% each. He also gets incredibly flustered and tongue-tied when Belgium praises him for his hard work, even getting flustered to the point of meekness and admitting he hadn't worked much at all. It is currently unknown what their adult relations are like.

Spain
Main article: Spain

Although Netherlands does not get along well with Spain at all, Belgium seems to. In the Boss CD, Spain helps Belgium with laundry and with Romano. They enjoyed friendly meals together, as well, including the churros that he and Romano made together. When her brother left to become independent, she not only stayed with Spain, but ended up having to fight her brother. Their current adult relations are unknown.

Appearances
Manga
Despite an early appearance at the World Meeting during volume 1, Belgium was not formally introduced to the published manga until volume 3. Prior to this, she appeared rarely in strips and sketches on Himaruya's blog.
Drama CD
To date, Belgium has only appeared in one drama CD: Hetalia Drama CD Interval Vol. 2: Boss CD.
Anime
Belgium is shown in a brief non-speaking cameo in the "Meeting Of The World" segment of Episode 01.

Belgium also appeared in a special unaired episode The Diary of the Awesome Me, part 2, where she had a non-speaking cameo when Hungary explains the history of Belgium's cat festival.

In December 2010 Nakamura Eriko was announced as her seiyuu for Episode 94 of Hetalia: World Series. (Nakamura is the same seiyuu for Belgium in the Boss CD.) The Episode adapts segments from the version of Boss Spain and Chibiromano seen in the third published volume.

Trivia
*In notes included in the special booklet for Hetalia: Axis Powers volume 3, Himaruya revealed that he initially drew a Belgium without any facial features, in order to imagine what her look and personality would be like before he decided on a friendly-type of girl. She also originally had no ribbon, though Himaruya noted that the design would have been innovative as it is rare for his female characters to lack hair accessories.
*In an annotation in Netherlands and Japan’s Isolation' it is stated that Belgium was a farming nation during the time the United Kingdom of the Netherlands was established; however Belgium had started to industrialize in 1798, three years after Austria was driven away by France, while the UKN was founded in 1815. The split up of this country was initially not Belgium's intention, but Belgium wanted to see both her economical (industrial) and demographic (3,5 million Belgians vs 2 million Dutch) superiority over the Netherlands translated into political power. Holland, seeing Belgium as a territorial gain (in Hetalian terms: a maid) instead of an equal partner, refused. Thus the Belgian rebellion became the Belgian Revolution and Belgium was on her way to become the 5th industrial superpower and 4th largest trading empire of the world, a position she held until WWI.
*Belgium is also called Alice by some fans. The name was ment to resemble the popular 'Alice in Wonderland' due to the similar personalities between them. Alice is also a popular name in Belgium which adds to the meaning. (According to statbel.fgov.be in 2008 Alice ranked 45 in the top 100 with 187 Alices, remarquably better then 2007 (place 62), while Alicia has climbed from 65 in 2007 to 37 in 2008. Emma is already since 2003 the most popular female name in Belgium).
*Belgium's Cat Festival is a festival only celebrated in Ypres, its official name is Kattenstoet (Dutch for Cat Parade) and originates from the cloth trade. When Monks created the Belgian coast to gain more land, the new land was infertile and salty, only grass would grow and afterwards farmers and villagers would keep sheep on these lands to fertilize them. The large amount of wool was then woven into cloth which made the County of Flanders really prosperous. The Flemish cities built cloth halls to stock and trade the cloth, but they faced one problem- there were mice. These little creatures were attracted to the warmth of the cloth and also liked the taste of it. To solve this problem, the city put many, many cats in the Hall to protect the cloth, and when summer ended, trade came to a stop and there was hardly anyone who actually wanted to keep all the animals alive, nor was there were any means to. Since farmers had to kill almost all their cattle (which were taking up space), and there was still no food for them, the solution was to kill the cats. They also wanted to celebrate the good trading year so they decided to combine both of them. The feast would be about cats and in the end, all the cats would be thrown from the tower of the Belfry. In 1817 they made an ethical adaptation: they stopped throwing living cats down.
*Belgium has her first speaking role in Hetalia volume 3 when she meets with Spain and Romano.
*In Volume 3 both character profiles of Belgium and the Netherlands say that they are older sisters and brothers, not depicting who of them is older. However this could imply that their sibling Luxembourg is younger then them.
*In a recent blog post, Himaruya has stated fan suggested options for her name, including Laura, Emma, Anri, and Manon. No possible surname was given.

Netherlands (オランダ, Oranda; also known as Holland), is a minor character in the series Hetalia: Axis Powers. He represents the country of Netherlands (of which Holland is a region, see Trivia for explanation of the naming problem). He is the older brother of Belgium and Luxembourg.

Appearance
Netherlands has somewhat short, spiky pale brown (or blond) hair with sideburns, and eyes that have varied between being amber, green, or blue in different colored artwork. He is shown to be quite muscular and about the same height as Denmark, and has a small vertical scar on his forehead. He also wears a long, blue and white striped scarf, shown in his formal debut in the series as well as a uniform sketch.

Personality and Interests
Netherlands is said to be a strong strategist and world-dominating type of man who likes really young women (aka Lolita Complex, or lolicon) and thinks nothing of using some types of shady drugs. As mentioned in Christmas Rampage 2007, he once fought with Turkey over the title of "The Tulip Country".

In Volume 3 of the manga the character profile says that he is "The solemn, neat freak, downer, Hokuriku-dialect speaking, scheming older brother. (Hokuriku is the region west of Tokyo on the Japan Sea side of Japan.)<br />Of course he goes Dutch. Of course his kitchen and garden maintenence is flawless. By the way, he loves bunnies! The raw materials for his cooking come from Germany!". Also in a seperate translation it is stated that he also is a neurotic free older brother that hates tied things and messy gardens.

The notes in Rampage also revealed that he has another sibling, Luxembourg. Netherlands is depicted as a smoking a marijuana blunt in one sketch, further reflecting the infamy of marijuana and other drugs in Amsterdam. In his formal debut in the series, he is shown constantly smoking from a pipe.

In the Battle For America strip, he is mentioned to have beat up both Sweden and Finland after they built a villa (New Sweden) in the "new world". Finland proceeds to worry about what would happen if Netherlands found the baby America.

Netherlands also owns a pet rabbit, whose name is not yet known.

Relationships
Belgium
Main article: Belgium

Netherlands and Belgium are said to have had difficult relations, stemming from when they were both under Spain's control. When Netherlands left to become independent, he fought against both her and Spain in the Dutch Revolt and the Eighty Years' War.

He later tried to reconcile with Belgium so they could both form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but due to their irreconcilable differences (Netherlands being better with trade and influenced by the Protestant British versus Belgium being better with farming and influenced by the Catholic French), it did not work out and Belgium declared her independence.

It is said that she is often pushed around by both Netherlands and their other sibling Luxembourg.

Japan
Main article: Japan

Though Netherlands acted aggressive towards most others, he refrained from acting this way towards Japan to convince him to open trade with foreigners, due to having had a companionship with him for years before.

Also, in the Netherlands and Isolationist!Japan comic, it is shown that Netherlands is visibly bothered by the fact that Japan signed a peace treaty with America.

Spain
Main article: Spain

Netherlands does not get along well with Spain at all, to where it is said that he likes to punch him. He eventually left to become independent, but found that he had to fight against his sister as well (who had stayed with Spain).

In the Anime
The silhouette version of Netherlands briefly appeared in Episode 39: The Battle For America, where he was drawn slightly more "monster-like" than how he appeared in the manga strip. He is voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto in this cameo. He also makes a shilouetted appearance in Episode 64, on a war relations list.

Trivia
*Though notes on Netherlands were given as early as 2007, his actual appearance remained shrouded in mystery until Hidekaz Himaruya drew an illustration to commemorate Group E in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Before the illustration, all that was known of his appearance was that he had blond hair and green eyes (though he appeared with somewhat different colors in the FIFA group shot). His silhouetted form also briefly appeared in both The Battle For America and an illustration in the webcomic version of The War Of Austrian Succession.
*Due to both the Netherlands and Holland being referred to as Oranda in Japanese, his name is commonly translated as "Holland" rather than "Netherlands" (which would be the more technically-correct term as Holland only refers to two of its provinces). However, both names are sometimes mistakenly used interchangeably for the entire Netherlands, similar to the tendency to refer to the United Kingdom as "England". It should be noted that sometimes the Dutch people refer to their own country as Holland.
*It was believed by some fans that the scar on Netherlands' forehead was either a result of the Dutch Revolt or from one of the historical floods such as the Great Storm of 1703 or the North Sea Flood of 1953. But as Netherlands appears as a teenager with the scar in the 1500s (in volume 3), these theories have been rendered moot and it remains unknown as to how he received it. Another possibility would be the flood of 1421, which killed 10,000 people.
*An early answer to a question in 2007 described Netherlands as a tsundere type of character who loves to fight, and that was xenophobic. However, it remains to be seen if the latter is part of his characterization or if he is still a tsundere type.
*In Volume 3 both character profiles of Belgium and the Netherlands say that they are older sisters and brothers, not depicting who of them is older. However this could imply that their sibling Luxembourg is younger then them.
*In a recent blog post, Himaruya has stated possible options for his human name, including Tim, Gobert, Abel, and Mogens. No possible surname was given.

Uniform Guide: Belgium

2010-11-25T22:40:07Z

99.159.197.120: /* Military Uniform */

This is a listing of outfits worn by Belgium in Hetalia: Axis Powers. Changes made to them in other adaptations, such as the anime, are noted where applicable.

Military Uniform
Belgium wears a military uniform with 3/4-length sleeves and a high collar. The basic design of her uniform is similar to the ones worn by Spain and South Italy, along with being khaki in color. She wears a black tie and green hairband, and has tall boots. Like Spain, her belt has a shoulder strap connected to it.

In an early uncolored draft, Belgium's tie had a more elaborate design, and her boots had high heels and laced up. She also wore gloves. Another variant of the outfit (that appeared in a "chibi" sketch) showed her with a neckbow instead of a tie. Another version of the outfit shown in her volume 3 profile depicts the uniform with full sleeves.

World Meeting
In her brief cameo in Meeting Of The World, Belgium wears a long, elaborate aqua dress and a pink bolero with a matching headband, in addition to jewelry. She appears the same way in the anime version of the segment.

She also made a brief appearance in the prototype version, sitting next to Spain in the first panel. In this version, she seems to wear a sweater with a dress shirt and tie underneath, and a black headband.

Early Design
In Himaruya's first design of Belgium, she is shown wearing a dark-colored dress with long, puffed sleeves and a high collar. She wears an apron over the dress, and has tights and Mary Jane-style shoes.

Her headband is also dark, and is in a much different style, with long "tails" hanging down her back.

Belgium (ベルギー, Berugii, human name unknown) is a minor character in the series Axis Powers Hetalia/Hetalia: Axis Powers. She represents the country of Belgium.

Appearance
She has short and wavy blonde hair, held back with a green ribbon headband. In her profile sketch by Hidekaz Himaruya, she is shown wearing a military uniform like most of the other characters. However, in her "Meeting Of The World" appearance in both the manga and anime, she wears an aqua dress and light purple bolero (with a matching light purple headband) .

Her military uniform has varied in appearance in the sketches that exist of it: In an early-full body picture, she was shown to wear gloves, her boots were high-heeled with visible laces, and her tie had an elaborate black design. In a super-deformed character sketch, her boots were simplified (with the heels and laces removed), and her tie was changed to a neckbow. However, in a later design, the neckbow was changed back to a tie (with a somewhat different design than before) and her pants became breeches.

In earlier-drawn sketches, Belgium is shown in a traditional European dress and wearing a slightly different headband (with longer ribbon "tails"). A later colored "chibi" sketch shows her hair colored pale brown, rather than blonde.

Personality And Interests
Little has been revealed about Belgium at this time, though it is mentioned in Christmas Rampage '07 that she has a brother Holland (who has only been shown in a picture on Hidekaz Himaruya's blog) and another sibling, Luxembourg.

It is said that although she is mature and has a cheerful personality, she doesn't stand out much when surrounded by other people.
