France (フランス, Furansu) is a main character in the series, Hetalia: Axis Powers. In 2008, Himaruya gave human names to some of the characters and he received the name Francis Bonnefoy (フランシス・ボヌフォワ, Furanshisu Bonufowa).

Attributes
Appearance
France has shoulder-length blond hair and blue eyes, and has a slight amount of facial hair which he believes makes him look like a "big brother" (it is said to represent the Gorges du Tarn, or Tarn Gorges) that he'd been growing since the late 18th century. At times his eyes are violet and, in more recent art, he's often depicted as a brunette. He wears a long blue coat and matching capelet, with red pants and brown boots. He is often depicted with a rose, which is also used to censor his genitals in his nude scenes.

When France initially appeared in the webcomic, his hair was drawn shorter and less wavy, but was drawn longer over time as the art style changed and evolved. Initially his hair was parted in the middle and fell at the sides of his face, however Himaruya changed his bangs in Volume 5, so that his hair is now parted on the left with his right bang falling into his face somewhat.. He also originally wore white spats over his boots, a detail that was dropped in later artwork.

Himaruya has mentioned that he has a rather nice body though he's not at all macho, instead of being rather lanky but with muscles "in the right places."

Personality and Interests
France was once a large nation, but after Napoleon Bonaparte had died, he was no longer good at war and instead attracted tourists to his country with his wine. A great cook who is called the nation of arts and a lover of everything beautiful, he has an intense rivalry with England, and loves to argue with him over trivial topics. While he used to hate Germany, lately they've been spending a lot of time together. His hobbies are manipulation activities, agriculture, fashion design, sketching, singing, and telephones, as well as wandering around the art museums and fashion boutiques of Paris. He likes places that are a little odd or chic.

France often seems infatuated with most of the nations and is known to make blatant sexual comments at every opportunity and is very affectionate, often shown streaking or touching other nations inappropriately. However, he believes love is not something to be forced on others and, if given a firm no, will usually avoid touching or stripping, and he will stop if what he's doing isn't enjoyed. He is attracted to beautiful things, which include men and women of any age (supported by statements such as "Sure, I'll settle for boys! Boys are the best!" and "This big brother here loves pure and innocent children like you." in response to a fan not knowing the meaning of the term "tachi") and maybe even some non-human beings. He said "be gentle to the ladies and be gentle to the earth" is his motto. He's admitted to being "the dandiest among the dandies." He loves himself so much that he does not bother to remember English and considers French the "language of love." In addition, he has referred to the others as insignificant characters.

France actually seems to be rather responsible and sometimes appropriately fits his "big brother" role. In a scrapped strip, because of America's young age(or, rather, the age he appears) he didn't allow him to drink alcohol, even when he begged(in contrast to England who took him out to do so, though it was in order to get information out of him.)

He likes men who have exquisite bodies and give him a good impression, and has no preference in their personalities, so long as they are not like England. He said he would like cool but passionate women, and might latch on best to someone who is good at singing. He also mentioned, in response to that the French supposedly fall in love due to other's body odors, that a faint, flowery scent could have him curled up in pleasure. In response to another fan suggesting their lack of will to stand near him because of his overbearing scent, he stated that he only wore a little perfume.

He stated that he's afraid of computers, Germany (and that he supposedly hates Germans in general, despite that he seems to get along with both brothers as of recent), Russia, Switzerland, whenever England is angry, and possibly Turkey. He stated this through a response to a fan, thus over the computer, and that doing so was bad enough for him. It seems that gardening relaxes him, and that he isn't intimidated by other technologies, as he claimed to be playing Bokosuka, a video game, with Germany and England. However, he was seen using a laptop in a strip where he said he wanted to go sightseeing in England and asked him to recommend hotels, so it's unknown if his cyberphobia is retconned or if he simply used the computer out of necessity.

He's referenced his old age several times, saying things like how his waist is always creaking, his back hurts, and that he had to surrender to sleep early in the day. Despite this, he gets upset when said that he's a grandpa as opposed to a big brother, and claims he is still young.

According to Volume 4, he holds the belief that those who have been "toyed with by history" are always reborn, but into a normal life and get to live regular, happy lives. He felt this was confirmed when he met a girl named Lisa who had come to France for her birthday whom he believed to be the reincarnation of Joan of Arc.

Relationships
America
Main Article: America

France fought over his rival England for ownership of a baby America. Despite losing the battle, it seems that France has nothing against him, seeming to treat America like a younger brother at times.
When America went on a diet in Supersize You, he asked France for a suggestion, however, whatever was said was censored out; later in the Hetalia Fantasia 2 C.D., France feels remorse for telling America that a snack diet was a great way to lose weight. This comes after he stumbles into a dungeon area he believes America based off of the Palace of Versailles, and he becomes very emotional. After a lot of hard work on his part, France presented America with a dismembered Statue of Liberty, celebrating America's 100th year of official independence. In Independence Day, France's gift was a censored object along with champagne, to which America asked him not to show such things in public.
France has offered to feed America his food instead of England's cooking multiple times, once becoming very depressed when a young America stated that both France's and England's cooking were "sweet and tasty". In the strip America's Brewster F2A Buffalo France refuses to offer a depressed America a drink after he has a horrible day, stating that he is still a child.

Austria
Main Article: Austria

Not much is known about these two's relationship, although in Big Brother France And The Frying Pan! France is seen outside Austria's window, ranting about how much he desires him, and talking about how good looking and talented Austria is. The Christmas Rampage 2007 strips show France tricking Austria into stripping down in order to get Hungary a hat, yet this may have only been to make Prussia feel better. In A Kind of Aristocratic Comic, photos from France's camera revealed France had been stalking Austria (although France claimed that England had made him do espionage, this is probably a lie, as he had been taking seemingly useless photos of Austria). In The Austrian Anschluss it is explained that France's and Austria's relationship was abysmal at the time of Austria's annexation, and that Austria had been at about every anti-France alliance held.

England/UK/Britain
Main Article: England

Despite both being members of the Allied forces, England and France have a deep-rooted historical rivalry between them. While they can be seen to constantly argue with each other over the littlest things (like language and culture), they appear to have a level of respect for each other and are quick to team up with each other if a third party should enter the argument. France even tried to marry England to save his country once, though neither of them really wanted it. In strips focusing on England's childhood, he is often shown being picked on by a pre-teen France, who on one occassion, scoffs at him for not growing his hair long - and when England's long hair turns out a mess, France teases him by saying he'll cut it into a "cool" style - by cutting it back to the style he had before. In Crossing Through the Year 1000, the two younger countries are fooled into believing that the world will soon be over, and England agrees to let France pretend to have conquered him, since it is only for a little while. They later reminisce about their childhood when Japan makes the same mistake.

Germany
Main Article: Germany

The state of their relationship depends on the specified time period however, generally, like England, Germany and France have a history of being one another's enemies, and as such the two don't seem to get along. In Let's Think About The G8 members, when Germany suggested France be removed from the group, he argued that they had actually been getting along recently. In Kusogame the two and America went to a maid cafe in Japan together. Both are set in the present day. During his April Fools sitejacking, he seemed to know a fair amount about him, especially that he, like Italy, often ran around naked, thus he needed a different idea of what to do to him as he had been stripping the others (in the end he forced him into a maid cosplay and cat ears.)

Italy
Main Article: Italy

France grew up with a small Chibitalia, but after Chibitalia returned from spending time with Roman Empire, France only wanted to control him. Italy refers to France as "France nii-chan" in strips set in both the past and present. Once Italy had grown into a teenager, he visited France again, resulting in the older man suddenly becoming enthusiastically attracted to him. During the visit, Italy saw the word "intercourse" in a book and asked him what the definition was. France replied by saying that intercourse is something you do with someone you like, then proceeded to ask "So Italy, do you like me?" (This was changed in the anime to France using body language to express the meaning of intercourse.) France seems to have a soft spot for Italy, becoming frantic when England suggests they spread rumours about Italy and responding with "I know he's kind of dumb, and he's weak and useless, but he's not a bad guy..." He then proceeds to break down in tears, causing England to note that France, while always insulting Germany, never really brings himself to badmouth Italy.

Monaco
Main Article: Monaco

Monaco acts as a younger sister figure to France and is solely dependent on him for military strength, as well as intervention in other affairs. Due to this, Monaco often accepts his various requests.

Seychelles
Main Article: Seychelles

In the Gakuen Hetalia universe, it is revealed (via flashback) that he helped raise her as a child, while in the present day he carries an affection for her and attempts to undress her, much to her shock and embarrassment, apparently to see what her body has become like.

Their relationship in the mainstream Hetalia universe has not been mentioned, outside of France appearing with her in Shipwrecked and an illustration in Christmas Rampage 2007, which depicts him groping Seychelles.

Spain
Main Article: Spain

The two get along rather well, having grown up and fought in wars together, though Spain remains oblivious to France's more perverted tendencies and cannot see why Romano hates him. It is said in production notes by Himaruya that their relationship is actually undesirable, yet the two remain inseparable. Recently, it seems Spain is aware that France is a bad influence on him, calling him "despicable" before defeating him in The Battle of Garigliano with the help of his pet bull. France's first bird named Pierre is used for communication with him.

Appearances
Anime
France first appears at the world meeting in Episode 01, opting to disagree with both America and England in their argument.

After being left out of the second Allied Forces meeting in Episode 10, France reflects on his history of past "victories", insisting that he was successful a long time ago.

Trivia
*His birthdate (July 14th) corresponds with the date of the French national holiday known as Bastille Day, a celebration of the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille.
*In notes included in the special edition booklet for Hetalia: Axis Powers volume 3, Himaruya stated that France was originally meant to look more middle-aged, and that he was intended to have a completely suave personality. The "older", shorter-haired design could be seen in early chapters of the webcomic, but faded as the style changed.
*Because of England and America's inability to recognize and fear of him, it has been hinted that an abruptly awoken France is not a pleasant sight, and that he may be a sleepwalker.
*France shares both Japanese and English voice actors, Masaya Onosaka and J. Michael Tatum respectively, with Issac Dian, a character from the anime Baccano! He also shares J. Michael Tatum as an English voice actor with Sebastian Michealis from Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler.
*In volume 4 it was revealed that he is a member of the Academy Gourmet Food Club along with Turkey and China. In the same scene of this colored chapter, a graphic hue edit or lighting error used to accentuate the punchline of this scene accidentally discolored these three characters uniform pants to an odd shade of green, opening a door for some fan confusion.

Creatures of Hetalia

2012-09-17T00:33:22Z

98.15.172.95: /* Austria */

There are many animals that appear in Hetalia: Axis Powers. This article includes information about the characters' pets and other animals that appear in the series.

By country
America
When ordered to "go make friends" in Japan, America befriended this whale. Later, it is shown to be living in a pool in America's backyard. It has a fondness for Lithuania, much to Tony's jealousy. It's a rather strange-looking whale as Himaruya's referred to it as being "unidentifiable." A white, fluffy cat is shown as America's pet in Why Americans Love Spring. Another cat that resembles its master (down to a "Nantucket" hair) is shown in some Nekotalia sketches and in a panel in volume 3's fake summary of events. Possibly inspired by the pun on his name (usa, which looks similar to U.S.A, means "bunny" in Japanese), young America is often shown either holding or playing with a brown and white rabbit. America also takes care of a unicorn that "flew out of the forest" to meet him(though England also gave him a unicorn for his birthday, and it's unknown if it's the same one.) He actually cannot see the unicorn, but he manages to take care of it. Tony sees the unicorn as a rival.

When asked about carrier animals in reference to Austria's eagle and France's pierre, Himaruya said that America has an eagle of his own to send messages for him.

Australia
In his introductory sketches, Australia is shown to own an angry-looking koala. It's possible this is a joking reference to Australian "drop bears".

Austria
Austria is shown to have the Austrian eagle deliver messages for him in the War of Austrian Succession strips.

Cameroon
Cameroon is revealed to have a pet lion cub named Kokolo in his appearance in the special edition booklet of Hetalia: Axis Powers volume 3. In the Halloween 2011 event, it is revealed that Kokolo is a University of Glasgow fine arts graduate.

Canada
Kumajirou is a small white bear who belongs to Canada. He is known for saying "who are you?" to Canada and rarely says anything else. However, it's said no one can get his name right. He's very apathetic but might be good at taking care of people. He is most likely a Polar bear, though some fans hypothesize he may be a Kermode bear instead. This has not been confirmed one way or another in the manga, although in one piece of art Germany does mistake Kumajirou for Knut (a baby polar bear from Germany), lending support to that idea and supporting peoples' difficulty to remember his name. Kumajiro is voiced by Ai Iwamura.

China
China has a panda that he often carries around with him in a bamboo basket that he slings over his back. According to a blog post, it is always a different one. China has also been seen with a life-sized panda that he calls Mr. Panda. But the panda was replaced by a giant kitty on Christmas.

England
In some comics, a younger version of England is shown to have had a rabbit that followed him around.

Finland
Finland and, by extension, Sweden, own Hanatamago, a small white dog. She is able to talk in Christmas specials, where she once wished she had a normal name like 'Charlotte', and that she didn't like the things that Finland feeds her. A blog post described her as friendly, bright, calm, and fluffy.

France
France has several small birds, all named Pierre, who are used to send and receive letters and messages to Spain and other nations. Italy commented on Prussia's blog and asked if his bird could do the same. They are all voiced by Ai Orikasa.

Germany
Germany has three dogs shown and named in canon: Blackie, Berlitz, and Aster, all three of which are mentioned in his version of Hatafutte Parade. Blackie is believed to be a Dachshund, Berlitz is a male German Shepherd, and Aster appears to be a Hovawart or a Golden Retriever. All of his dogs are said to be particularly wild and enjoy running around in the hills and will often get dirty because of it. Aster appears to be friendly with Luxembourg's dog.

A fourth, unnamed dog and its puppy have been shown in the trading card set. They appear to be Dalmatians. Germany is depicted in Red Panties with a dog, as well as a black cat voiced by: Aki Kanada. He is later shown to own a deep gray cat that has a personality much like his own, identified as Germany-cat and voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto.

When asked about carrier animals such as France's Pierre and Austria's eagle, Germany was cited to have a stork which delivered messages for him.

Greece
Greece has many cats that live in his house and follow him around, parodying the large amount of stray cats found in Greece. Most of them are not named, as Japan found out while talking to Greece.

Iceland
Iceland is often drawn with a puffin-like bird, who claims to be his mascot. He follows Iceland and eats fish, however he's been shown eating licorice with Iceland, and sang with Iceland about drinking Brennivín. In the volume 3 special booklet, he is briefly mentioned in notes accompanying artwork with Iceland, where Himaruya states that his name is Mr. Puffin. He is differentiated from other puffins with his black belly and red bow tie. It is said that Mr. Puffin may look cute, but he speaks and acts like a mafioso. He is haughty and attempts to take credit for things he did not do, and prides himself on how cute he is, expecting compliments from people, especially Iceland. He gets offended whenever he's told otherwise. In a recent blog post, he was described as being devious, cute but with a foul mouth, and someone who roams around a lot. It's said his relationship with Iceland is "interesting." Mr. Puffin is voiced by Masaya Onosaka.

Japan
Pochi (or Pochi-kun), is a small brown (sometimes colored white) fluffy Shiba dog that belongs to Japan. He is often shown with his master, and has appeared in a sketch with Hanatamago and another with one of France's Pierres. It is revealed in a later strip that Pochi is as reserved as his master, becoming angered when Netherlands's pet rabbit licked him and ordering it to take responsibility. He's apparently rather manly for such a small dog. He tends to follow people around and might sometimes deliver messages from Japan to nearby towns. Pochi is voiced by Aki Kanada.

Netherlands
In one strip, Netherlands is shown to have a pet rabbit with a heart-shaped spot on its back. Character notes reveal it to be a Holland Lop. The rabbit is able to communicate with Pochi, and reveals that its master has become lonely due to the conflict with Belgium. Further character notes reveal it to be lazy and not like leaving the house much and that it sleeps a lot. It loves to have the base of it's ears scratched.

New Zealand
New Zealand has been drawn with a sheep on the Hetalia World Map from volume 3 of the manga. It parodies the fact that there are more sheep in New Zealand than there are people. In a recent design sketch of New Zealand, he is shown to be holding a kiwi, a small bird that is native to New Zealand.

Lithuania
Lithuania as a child owned a little brown dog which he said was usually quiet, but when they met Russia, it couldn't help but to bark at him. It was then calmed down by its owner.

Luxembourg
Pelze is Luxembourg's small, somewhat chubby dog that first appeared in the Halloween 2011 strip. Pelze means "furs" in German. Character notes reveal that she is soft, kind, and doesn't bark much. Unlike many other animals, she can't speak human languages, as well. She's friendly with one of Germany's dogs, presumably Aster.

Poland
Poland first reveals he has a pony to France and England when they ask him if he has made preparations for a fight against Germany. He also appears with this pony in the film, though both wind up attacked and transformed by the Pict aliens. The pony is voiced by Masaya Onosaka.

Prussia
Prussia has a small yellow bird, which often rides on his head. He didn't know about the bird until he started a blog and someone emailed him about it. The bird does not have an official name, however, it is referred to by much of the English-speaking fandom as "Gilbird," referring to Prussia's human name, Gilbert. Other sketches have shown him to have several of the birds, and even with the bird(s) wearing a hat(s). In the anime, a bird used to send a letter to Austria is shown to be this same type of bird and communicates by making angry grunts (as opposed to the peeping birds in the drama CD). Prussia's bird is voiced by Atsushi Kousaka.

Russia
In the Nekotalia strips in volume 3, Russia is shown to own a large cat that somewhat resembles him, right down to his prominent nose. It attempts to make friends with the Italy brothers' cats, though Belarus's cat becomes very jealous. In the 2008 April 1st strip, we see Spain reporting on strange(but fake) international news. Towards the beginning, he mentions that rabbits had retreated to the mountains very suddenly. The strip includes a picture of Russia happily petting one of these rabbits.

Sealand
In a recent image profile of Sealand, he is seen with a seagull to his right wearing a sailor's cap that is a little different than Sealand's hat. In the Sealand and Latvia mascots, Sealand says he has a pet "hamster", however he said it was 130cms long, to which Latvia said it wasn't, as 130 cms is abnormally large for a hamster. Latvia claimed to wake up with a strange creature in his bed one day, which Sealand said was his pet, presumably the "hamster." Latvia said he'd never seen anything of the sort in an encyclopedia. What sort of creature it is, is currently unknown.

Spain
A small bull sometimes shows up alongside Spain to aid him. The bull charged into the Ottoman Empire's carriage after to break Romano free and was later used to carry him back home. He also attacked France from behind during The Battle of Garigliano. During the April Fool's fake news report, the bull sat next to Spain with his own name tag that reads as "cattle" or "cow". The bull is voiced by Keikou Sakai.

Switzerland
Eiger, Jungfrau ('Virgin') , and Mönch ('Monk') are the names of Switzerland's pet goats, all named after Swiss mountains. He is pictured with one on the official Hetalia calendar. They're docile but apparently have a big attitude.

Thailand
According to a recent blog entry, Thailand has a male elephant named Toto, whom he dotes on ridiculously to the point of it being overweight. The elephant also has a fluffy speech pattern, especially when compared to Iceland's puffin.

Others
England's Magical Creatures
England has various magical creatures that appear before him, such as fairies, pixies, unicorns, and a little winged rabbit. Fanon has suggested various different names for his unicorn, and the green flying fairy-rabbit suggested as being Arthur's magical familiar, or even a pooka. In the English dub, he refers to the fairy rabbit as "Flying Mint Bunny", indicating that the rabbit has no real name in either version. Himaruya has noted that England's fairies are actually rather scary and that they and his other magical friends sometimes deliver messages for him.

Japan's Magical Creatures
*Voiced by: Hozumi Gōda (Kappa), Takahiro Mizushima (Youkai/"Onion Head"), and Yuki Kaida (Zashiki-warashi)

Along with England, Japan also has a number of magical creatures, including a kappa, a youkai (in this case, a talking onion-headed creature), and a zashiki-warashi. In Episode 30, England is able to see and even talk to these creatures. They explain that back in the day, some humans feared them while others believed in them and could see them, Japan included. However, in the new era, nobody acknowledges their existence anymore and they have become mere superstition. They also mention that they used to have conversations with Japan, but, like everyone else, he has stopped believing in their existence.

Kitty
*Voiced by: Aki Kanada

Kitty is a brown cat that appeared with Italy in Episode 13, and again with Japan in Episode 19, as well as some random points in the anime and manga. It also appears in Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White. In the dub, Italy also refers to it as 'Pooky' or 'Pookie', and mentions that it is female.

Norway's Magical Creatures
Norway is shown to have creature companions from Norse mythology. He's often drawn with a troll or a chubby green pixie/fairy, but is said to also have a nisse. He, like England, has his magical creatures deliver messages for him.

Pict Aliens
*Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi

A species of aliens that appear in the film Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White. They are all white and featureless figures with an antenna protruding from their heads, with no discernible differences to tell them apart as they act as a hive mind; their princess, however, can take a more defined, human-like shape. Those exposed to the light produced by the Pict are transformed into them and become part of the hive, though the stronger a person's happiness is, the more resistance they have to being fully converted.

Tony
*Voiced by: Hiroki Yasumoto (drama CD), Ai Orikasa (anime)

An alien who came to live with America after the Roswell Incident. In that strp, he was introduced as Fucking. He seems to have hated England ever since they first met, going as far as to call him a "fucking limey" but in the dubbed version, tony said "limey bastard" ('limey' being a negative slang term for 'British'). He seems to be quite fond of Lithuania, though, trying to abduct him with a spaceship and getting jealous whenever he spends more time with America's whale. In one of the mini dramas, he ends his sentences with "bubu". He also appears to have knowledge about other planets and aliens, as shown in Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White .

Turtles
When Spain was out at a restaurant with Romano, he attempted to cheer him up by exclaiming that even the turtles were worried over him, causing Romano to discover that turtles were inside the restaurant. Spain then wondered what they should name the turtles, though a policeman ordered him to give them back.

The turtles have appeared in a short clip of Episode 92.
