Turkey is rather tall and olive-skinned, with a slight stubble on his chin (much like [[France]]). He wears a long green (sometimes tan) coat, brown pants, knee-high boots, a tan scarf, and a red fez hat. His face is usually obscured by a white mask. Like [[Greece]], he has a double haircurl, but it rests down by his neck.

When not dressed up, he can often be seen wearing a green parka and brown pants.

Turkey is described as being a lively and excessively vigorous old man (though his exact age has never been revealed, he is one of the visibly physically older nations in the cast). He was known as the '''Ottoman Empire''' in his younger days, and was a very powerful nation with an overwhelming army force. He had the intention to conquer Europe, which was quite scared of him at the time. Now, he is thinking about being friends with them.

He is usually merry and friendly, yet it is said that he is ready to compete anytime with anyone (especially Greece) about even the smallest things due to his somewhat stubborn nature. He can also be nosy from time to time.

Turkey is too much of a show off; it is mentioned that he is always seeking for new things and fashion, and always stays in style. He loves to entertain tourists, and is quite a gourmet who enjoys eating various things every day. He favors the taste of sweet foods like [[wikipedia:Ashure|ashure]] and it is revealed that he carries a bottle of a sort of apple juice to drink during breaks. Greece remained under Ottoman control until the 19th century, when he became involved in a war to regain his independence and won. The two of them are unable to get along in the same environment without a fight of some sort, even after declaring a cease-fire. Turkey even built a shopping mall near Greece's border for his usage in spite of their rivalry.

Turkey first appears in [[Episode 55]], where he fights with Greece over who gets to be with Japan. The two wind up having to hang out with Turkey in the end. In [[Episode 75]] he makes an appearance when he attacks [[South Italy]], when he was known as the Ottoman Empire.

In the anime adaptation, his skin is lighter, and the visual gag of his eyebrows showing through his mask was elaborated in his design, showing an obvious thick dark pair of eyebrows through the white color.

He has dark hair tied back into a ponytail, and is often shown wearing a deep green Chinese military uniform with a red armband (though it was colored tan in one colorspread). He has a scar on his back, a reminder of when [[Japan]] attacked him when they were younger, and a panda-shaped birthmark above his buttocks.

One of the apparent oldest nations, he happens to be extremely superstitious, but not at all religious. He tries to act as an older brother to the other Asian nations, but fails to be treated as one. Somewhat like America, he likes to be in charge or have what he wants. He tends to end his sentences with the suffix "-aru" (a Japanese stereotype of Chinese accents), though sometimes he ends them with "-ahen" (opium) when conversing with England. He has a companion named "Shinatty-chan", an old man in a Hello Kitty knockoff costume.

He is shown to be a lover of cuisine, and is said to nag if food has a certain pattern of tastes. On one occasion in the WWII-set strips, he winds up arriving late to a meeting and explains that he always puts his food as his first priority.

China appears to have a love of cute things, particularly cartoon characters, Hello Kitty, and pandas, and he is frequently seen carrying one. He is also very artistic, as he is skilled at not only painting beautiful human beings full-scale, but also on something as small as a strand of hair (as seen in a strip in the web-comic); his artistic abilities don't, however, apply across the board, as his anime drawings are quite poor compared to Japan's and Korea's.

Overall he appears to be a cheerful character, though he can occassionally slip into moments of melancholy when reflecting on how much the world has changed in all the years he's been around. He's also been shown to be easily annoyed and prone to snapping, particularly when it comes to Korea.

In the Hetalia Fantasia CD he said that he, like all Chinese people, isn't one to waste a second of time. According to Russia, however, he often takes naps in the sun in his garden, does "some weird dance"(which China later clarified to have been tai chi) in the morning, and he himself said that he would sleep and eat all day on a holiday. In addition, he said that his specialty was online games. He also seems fairly gullible, as he said that, with the money he was earning, he would buy some products off of one of America's "promotional things".

Little has been revealed about their relationship. Hong Kong was raised by China before he became British territory. The two were eventually reunited when England's control ceased. In '''The Summary of the Plot until Now''', China is seen telling Hong Kong to stop drawing explicit art, saying that he will have to mosiac it all out. Hong Kong replies, "I'm kinda sorry. And I won't do it again. Maybe." Also, Hong Kong refers China as teacher ''(sensei)''.

After discovering the new nation (who appeared to be a child all on his own), China took him in and raised him as a younger brother, though Japan denied being related to him when asked about it. Japan eventually wound up betraying China when he decided to initiate a war, and attacked him with a katana (leaving a scar on his back). Since that war, the two remained on opposing sides as enemies, and China became distressed as to how war changed his "brother".

China is constantly annoyed by Korea's claims that he invented others' work, and his claim that both him and Japan should consider him to be their older brother. Korea also happens to have an obsession with China, wanting to be acknowledged by him. He also once showed the belief that China's breasts belonged to him like Japan's.

Despite the close relationship the two have had throughout their history, China is very suspicious and fearful of his northern neighbor, especially after the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-soviet_split Sino-Soviet Split]. In return, Russia has been shown to stalk China, especially when disguised in a panda suit, and takes a special interest in him.

He is a small blond child, clad in a black hat and matching cloak. Underneath his cloak, he wears a long black tunic, and tan-colored breeches. In at least one illustration, his eyes are depicted as black, though they are colored dark blue in the ''Hetalia'' trading card game. In some instances, his black clothing is also colored navy blue.

A deleted character design by [[Hidekaz Himaruya]], as well as an illustration included on ''Bamboo Thicket'', both depict an older version of Holy Roman Empire (presumably in his early teens). In his teenage design, he no longer wears his hat and has traded in his black/navy outfit for a white one.

The illustration on ''Bamboo Thicket'', which was done as a tribute for a game that a fan created, depicts HRE in an outfit reminiscent of [[Prussia]]'s Teutonic Knight uniform.

The grandson of [[Germania]], he seemed strong but had a weak constitution. His main goal was to get Chibitalia to become part of his empire. He was said to have loved "her" so much that his house crumbled and he didn't care.

He later threw himself into the [[wikipedia:Thirty Years War|Thirty Years War]], but eventually, after long periods of fighting, he was believed to have crumbled and fallen.

He loved Chibitalia (whom he thought to be a girl) and wanted to make "her" part of his empire, but the other child refused to join with him, having seen [[Ancient Rome|Grandpa Rome]]'s scars the last time they saw him alive.

When he left to go to war, Chibitalia gave him the panties "she" had worn (though it was changed to Chibitalia's deck broom in the anime) and they promised to see each other again when the war was over. He told Chibitalia that he had he loved her since the 900s, and kissed her (a scene that was edited out of the published version of the manga but retained in the anime). After that moment, they never saw each other again. [[Hidekaz Himaruya]] has promised a "happy ending" to their relationship, but this ending has not been revealed yet.

Holy Roman Empire first appears in the '''Chibitalia''' segment in [[Episode 01]], and expresses his desire to make Chibitalia become one with him. He continues to appear in the Chibitalia sub-storyline, up until [[Episode 11]], when he runs away after Chibitalia refuses to join with him. The sub-storyline was put on hiatus until [[Episode 21]], where he prepared to leave for war.

In [[Episode 22]], he bid Chibitalia farewell as he headed off to war, though Chibitalia wouldn't let him leave without "her" gift. In the anime adaptation, the scene with the panties was changed to Chibitalia giving Holy Roman Empire "her" deck brush. HRE thought of how he loved Chibitalia since the 900s, and they kissed. A post-credits teaser showed that HRE enjoyed his new deck brush very much. HRE later appears in brief cameos in episodes [[Episode 39: The Battle For America|39]] and [[Episode 40|40]], dreaming of Chibitalia (only to wake up and realize he was only dreaming).

His design was changed slightly for the anime, with his eyes becoming rounder and brighter in appearance. His breeches were also changed from tan to gray, and the navy blue coloring is used for the rest of his clothing.

The fifth volume of the anime DVD releases includes a version of [[Marukaite Chikyuu]] sung by Holy Roman Empire (along with a version sung by Chibitalia). It was released on October 23, 2009.

*In a scrapped scene by Himaruya, [[France]] breaks the news of HRE's death to an older Italy and tells him to forget about him (as he's suffered enough in the war).

*It is hinted in the ''Buon San Valentino'' strips that [[Germany]] may in fact be HRE, or have some sort of connection to him. The plot point, however, has yet to be resolved. Himaruya himself tends to avoid directly answering any questions that pertain to whether the two are connected or not.

*Though HRE is referred to as Germania's grandson in the official character profile by Himaruya, the ''Axis Powers Hetalia'' trading card game refers to HRE as his son.
*Hidekaz Himaruya has stated that HRE's clothes are based off of the clothes that philosophers wore in the time period that he (HRE) grew up in.

*When asked by a fan what HRE's height was, Himaruya answered that he and Chibitalia were both "7 apples tall", which would be approximately 3 feet in length (or nearly that).

In the prologue to the first volume and the first anime episode, a younger incarnation of him is shown, dressed in armor and a cape. He is deeply tanned, and both his hair and eyes are a dark brown. Like his grandsons, he has a wild curl in his hair, but two of them (one on the upper right side of his head, and one on the lower left side). In the earliest color illustration known to exist, he was depicted with green eyes.

The heir apparent to Rome's fortune, the young Feliciano spent an indeterminate amount of time living and traveling with his grandfather until Rome eventually grew weak and vulnerable due to his empire crumbling.

Due to what happened to his grandfather, Italy refused to become a new Roman Empire. Though he didn't inherit Rome's success, he did get his natural talents for art and trade.

The older of Rome's two known grandchildren, South Italy was overlooked and felt inferior, due to his brother inheriting their grandfather's talents (as well as apparently taking after Rome more in physical appearance).

Rome first appears in [[Episode 01]], in both the prologue and the '''Chibitalia''' segment. While he was portrayed as an older man in the manga version of '''Chibitalia''', he is shown younger and in his armor in the anime version.

In [[Episode 11]], a brief flashback image is shown of a weak and scarred Rome as Chibitalia tells [[Holy Roman Empire]] of his demise. As with his earlier appearance in the anime version of the storyarc, he is depicted in his younger incarnation in that scene (rather than his older, mustached appearance).

An apparition of Rome appears in [[Episode 18]], interrupting both of the Allied Forces' attacks on the Axis in order to perform a song about nations' roles in "heaven and hell" on Earth. His sudden appearances cause the Allied Forces to retreat in fear each time, though Italy is able to recognize the mysterious ghost as having been his grandfather. This is Rome's first speaking role.

In his first appearance in the '''Chibitalia''' strips in the webcomic (later reprinted in volume 1 of the published manga), he is shown as an elderly man with a mustache, and is dressed in a white beret and robe.

In the prologue to the first volume and the first anime episode, a younger incarnation of him is shown, dressed in armor and a cape. He is deeply tanned, and both his hair and eyes are a dark brown. Like his grandsons, he has a wild curl in his hair, but two of them (one on the upper right side of his head, and one on the lower left side). In the earliest color illustration known to exist, he was depicted with green eyes.

He appears once in the story '''Together with Grandpa Rome''' to [[Germany]] as the younger incarnation, and is shown to have existed that way back in the '''BC''' days of Rome (with his older appearance presumably being how he looked in AD).

He was once the great ruler of the Mediterranean Sea and the strongest nation, though none of his grandchildren inherited his success. He is said to be lively despite his old age and to have fallen in love with both [[List_of_minor_characters_in_Axis_Powers_Hetalia#Ancient_Greece|Ancient Greece]] and [[List_of_minor_characters_in_Axis_Powers_Hetalia#Ancient_Egypt|Ancient Egypt]] at first sight, and that he overflows with excitement at the sight of a strong man.

He enjoys cute girls, art, music and food.

An enemy of Rome, who was once his guard at some point in time, but soon became his enemy as their hatred ran deep to their bones. Germania was the one to deliver the killing blow to Rome, and died himself sometime after, though that period of time still remains hazy.

===North Italy===

The heir apparent to Rome's fortune, the young Feliciano spent an indeterminate amount of time living and traveling with his grandfather until Rome eventually grew weak and vulnerable due to his empire crumbling.

Due to what happened to his grandfather, Italy refused to become a new Roman Empire. Though he didn't inherit Rome's success, he did get his natural talents for art and trade.

The older of Rome's two known grandchildren, South Italy was overlooked and felt inferior, due to his brother inheriting their grandfather's talents (as well as apparently taking after Rome more in physical appearance).

Rome first appears in [[Episode 01]], in both the prologue and the '''Chibitalia''' segment. While he was portrayed as an older man in the manga version of '''Chibitalia''', he is shown younger and in his armor in the anime version.

In [[Episode 11]], a brief flashback image is shown of a weak and scarred Rome as Chibitalia tells [[Holy Roman Empire]] of his demise. As with his earlier appearance in the anime version of the storyarc, he is depicted in his younger incarnation in that scene (rather than his older, mustached appearance).

An apparition of Rome appears in [[Episode 18]], interrupting both of the Allied Forces' attacks on the Axis in order to perform a song about nations' roles in "heaven and hell" on Earth. His sudden appearances cause the Allied Forces to retreat in fear each time, though Italy is able to recognize the mysterious ghost as having been his grandfather. This is Rome's first speaking role.

In the anime, Rome's skintone is much lighter and his eyes were changed to an amber color.
