He is also referred to as Italy Veneziano (イタリア・ヴェネチアーノ Itaria Venechiāno). Between 2007 and 2008, Himaruya gave human names to some of the characters and he received the name Feliciano Vargas (フェリシアーノ・ヴァルガス Ferishiāno Varugasu).
Appearance
He has short brown hair and brown eyes, with a curl on the left side of his head, which acts as his erogenous zone when stroked or pulled. He wears a blue WWII military uniform, a black shirt and tie, and black boots. In the Volume 5 Special Booklet, Himaruya notes that he's changed the way Italy's hair falls, and it now appears shorter and more spread out as opposed to longer and falling to the sides of his head.

In his first appearance in both versions of the manga, and the first two episodes of the anime, he wore a tan uniform that looked similar to his brother's, aside from being drawn as a jumpsuit in the manga (though it was shown as a two-piece suit in the anime).

As a child, he wore dresses, and was often mistaken for a girl by Holy Roman Empire (and many others). When not in uniform, he can often be seen dressed in a white sailor suit-style top (with blue collar, necktie, and sleeve bands) and blue shorts.

Personality and Interests
Italy is a cheerful, energetic man, who although being the kin of Ancient Rome, is an irresponsible crybaby. He loves pasta, pizza, gelato, and cheese. Although he relies on Germany a lot, Italy doesn't really listen to what he says and instead daydreams or wanders off. His hobbies include cooking, designing clothes, siestas, painting, and singing. He was noted as being able to use both hands skillfully, though it may have been a joke as it was cited that it he could hold a paintbrush in one hand and a slice of pizza in another.

In the webcomic and the first drama CD, it is noted that he frequently gets stomach pains due to overindulging on gelato. Italy is shown to have a compulsion of stripping off all of his clothes for his daily 3PM "siestas," and usually forgets to put his pants back on after he wakes back up (causing Germany to have to lend him a pair of his own). His public nudity has become notorious enough that Switzerland will fire upon him if he catches him streaking throughout his homeland.

He also has the verbal tic of making a "Ve" sound (really said by Italians, above all in Emilia-Romagna, whereas you could hear a "Be" in other Italian regions, which is an abbreviation of "bene", "good", and it has the same function of the English interjection "well" at the beginning of a sentence), though in the anime adaptation, he makes other onomatopoeic sounds as well, a more notable one being a chant of "herahera" (a Japanese onomatopoeia which means "acting foolishly" or "frivolous") .

Though he was relatively weak and timid as a child, he was able to take on Turkey single-handedly at one point. It's also possible that he's a skilled fencer, as Himaruya entitled one of his blog entries "Italy's Fencing Strength Is Abnormal." According to Germany, when his hands and legs are bound, he dies.

Relationships
Ancient Rome
Main Article: Ancient Rome

The heir apparent to Rome's fortune, the young Italy spent an indeterminate amount of time living and traveling with his grandfather until Rome eventually grew weak and died due to his empire crumbling.

Due to what happened to his grandfather, Italy refused to become a new Roman Empire when Holy Roman Empire offered him the chance to do so. Though he didn't emulate Rome's military success, he did pursue the same instinctive talent for art.

Austria
Main Article: Austria

As a child, after Rome fell, Italy(Chibitalia) lived in Austria's house and spent the majority of his time there, acting as a maid due to becoming part of the Holy Roman Empire. He was raised there with Hungary's help. He believed Italy to be a girl until his voice broke sometime after he'd grown into a preteen, with Austria thinking he "had a feeling this would happen for some reason." It's assumed that, from then on, Austria bought him clothes of the proper gender and no longer made him wear maid's dresses. Because of Italy's behavior and being rather useless, Austria often pushed him around and punished him. Italy often asked if they would have pasta for dinner and the answer was always no. However, Italy was a glutton and went looking for pasta anyway. When Holy Roman Empire snuck him food Austria, believing he'd stolen it, locked him in a dark room as punishment.

During the Spanish-Austrian war, Italy had the opportunity to be reunited with his brother and live with Spain however he ran straight to Austria after being untied, despite that, according to Spain, he often complained about Austria's rule, seemingly because Spain scared him with his leering and dreaming of being with the Italy brother's all the time. He also was against Germany's annexation of Austria along with Hungary. Italy doesn't hold a grudge to Austria for his mistreatment as a child or from any wars they'd had, and is generally happy to see him, rushing to him and hugging him and rubbing their cheeks together.

France
Main Article: France

Italy (still a child) grew up with a teenage France. The two got along well until Italy was taken to spend time with Ancient Rome. When he returned, France only wanted to gain control of him. They are still on rather good terms, as Italy still refers to France as his big brother and has visited him a number of times. France is also unwilling to harm Italy despite being enemies.

Germany
Main article: Germany

After being found in a tomato crate, Italy became his prisoner, then ally. With Japan, they formed the Axis Powers. Italy is openly affectionate towards Germany, always trying his best for him and the Axis Trio as a whole; though failing most of the time. It is shown repeatedly that Italy has no problem sleeping in Germany's bed or publicly asking how Germany feels about him. Despite their many differences, Italy and Germany are rather close.

In the incomplete strip Buon San Valentino, it is hinted, though not outright confirmed, that Germany may be Italy's long-lost childhood love, Holy Roman Empire, when he appears to have a flashback of Chibitalia.

Holy Roman Empire
Main Article: Holy Roman Empire

As a child, Holy Roman Empire would frequently chase Italy about, demanding that he become a part of the Holy Roman Empire. After Austria gained control of Italy, they resided in Holy Roman Empire's house. Holy Roman Empire was excited, but had a hard time interacting with Italy as he had a crush on him (believing him to be a girl). As a result of HRE's quiet and intense gazes, Italy became very afraid of him at times.

Italy later revealed that the reason he refused HRE's offer to join him in becoming a new Roman Empire was because he saw the effects a long life of war had on his grandfather. Heartbroken, HRE leaves his home to go to war after other members of the Holy Roman Empire begin turning against him and Austria. As he leaves, he runs into Italy, and the two say their goodbyes as Italy gives HRE a token of his affection (his underwear in the webcomic version and his broom in the anime). The two share a goodbye kiss and HRE promises that he will return.

HRE's eventual fate has yet to be confirmed in the series, though in a discarded or unfinished comic, France goes to Italy and tells him that Holy Rome is 'no more', hinting that he may have been killed. However, as the strip was never aired, Holy Roman Empire's fate continues to go without address.

Hungary
Main Article: Hungary

When they were both under Austria's rule, she and Italy were very close and she became his older sister figure. She was one of the few characters who knew his true gender at that time, and didn't mind bathing with him despite that. Hungary then embraced him out of her love for cute boys. It's strongly hinted that they still remain close. Each December she dress herself as a monster from the Alps, the Krampus, and scares Italy. She was unable to contain herself and hugged him, telling him how cute he was, "capturing" him in the process, only serving to scare him more. He falls for this trick every year.

Japan
Main article: Japan

Japan is shown to often be unnerved by Italy's "shameless" and unusual behavior, even going as far as to order him to "take responsibility" and marry him after having been hugged and kissed by Italy as a greeting. When Italy once drove Japan to his house, his erratic driving skills inspired Japan to invent safer cars. The two have been shown to have a mutual respect of each others' history and artwork, and seem to be friends.

Poland
Main Article: Poland

Italy and Poland are shown to be good friends in a few of the "Extra Stories" and Comic Diary strips, and have known each other since they were small children. It was Poland who gave Italy the idea to make an ejectable seat in Germany's Kübelwagen, as he had previously designed an airplane with one (which backfired on him).

Prussia
Main Article: Prussia

Prussia is shown to be very fond of Italy and often refers to him as "Ita-chan" in the original Japanese text. According to Himaruya, worrying about Italy is "a tradition from Prussia's time".Upon being asked by a fan, Himaruya said that Prussia grew attached to him some time ago when they fought together. Prussia considers him 'cute' and is attracted to his and his brother's climate and topography and even asks him out on a date in the drama adaptation of his blog event, only for Italy to be oblivious to his question, being fixated on his bird. In the same CD, Germany says that Prussia is very good with Italy. In Osōji Prussia (Cleaning Prussia), if he chooses to go to Italy's house to clean, he states that he has clear ulterior motives to be praised by Italy. Upon arrival Prussia finds Italy asleep in his bed, and begins to stroke Italy's head. As he strokes Italy, he is reminded of the Risorgimento as he did so, and happily daydreams about him and Italy on a gondola in Venice.

Italy has also praised Prussia for his hard work and was eager to join him and India in dancing during America's Halloween party.

In an older series of drawings, Prussia was shown blushing and breathing harshly while approaching a teenaged Italy, before embracing him, to his distress.

South Italy (Romano)
Main article: South Italy

The two brothers grew up knowing of each other, but they never actually met face to face. Italy eventually went off to live with their grandfather for some time, while South Italy stayed behind. After Grandpa Rome had died and Italy came back, South Italy and the other boys became bullies to him. The two were separated again at the end of the Italian War, when Italy was claimed by the Holy Roman Empire and Austria, while South Italy was sent to live with Spain because he was too difficult to deal with.

In the present day, the two brothers do not get along very well; South Italy occasionally refuses to acknowledge his brother's existence, though Italy is more than eager to be around his older brother. As a child, South Italy often felt jealous and inferior to Italy, due to the younger brother inheriting their grandfather's talent for art and cleaning, while he could do neither well. He also felt that his brother took after their grandfather in appearance more. Despite this though, he is shown to have at least a subconscious care for him, becoming upset when his brother implies he does not admire him, and sharing a bed with him. Usually, when it is hinted that he cares about Italy, something happens that angers him and he instantly reverts back.

Although South Italy seems tougher than Italy, both are actually cowardly and ineffectual. South Italy refers to Italy as Veneziano, and Italy and others refer to South Italy as Romano, in order to avoid confusion.

Spain
Main Article: Spain

Italy affectionately refers to Spain as his older brother while, in the original Japanese text, Spain refers to Italy as Ita-chan. Spain's greatest desire is for the Italy brothers to live with him, and he's also expressed interest in marrying them, however, in 2005 when he returned to him saying that it was legal for men to marry now, Italy merely congratulated him despite having said it would be okay to get married as a child. When Romano and Veneziano were still young, Spain wished Romano could be as cute as his brother was and even wanted Austria to trade with him because North Italy was better behaved and a harder worker. During the War of Austrian Succession, Spain promised Veneziano that they could be together forever when the fight was over, however his thoughts and possibly his expression scared Italy into running back to Austria in tears.
Manga
Italy is first introduced in the first chapter of the webcomic and the beginning of the published manga. During World War I, Germany crosses the border into northern Italy with just a stick. Expecting a great opponent reminiscent of the Roman Empire, he instead encounters Italy hiding in a tomato crate in the woods. Italy immediately surrenders and begs Germany not to kill him, though Germany is still in shock and initially believes Italy is putting on an act. Italy shows no resistance to capture, and leaves when Germany leaves the cell door open only to return after briefly flirting with some girls. After writing a song about Germany, he is ultimately kicked out. After the war is over, Italy appears at Germany's house begging for a job as he has fallen into poverty just as Germany has. Grateful, Italy later declares himself an ally of Germany as the stage for World War II begins to form.

Italy proves to be a "useless" ally, with his battle tools being various forms of Pasta and white flags. He is frequently retreating, captured, and overtaken whenever he tries to mount a strategy on his own. (Such as getting attacked by Egypt with a stick, provoking a defeated France into attacking him, and immediately surrendering to England while Germany is away on another front). When Germany meets with Japan to formalize their alliance, Italy flirts with the local girls then falls asleep underneath a heated kotatsu table. When the three begin to train, Italy shows regular incompetence despite Germany's threats and confuses Japan in the process. Italy also has a habit of abandoning training, in one case to play with a stray cat, though he is always dragged back by Germany.

When Germany begins to put in place an alliance with Russia, Italy begins to worry that his friends will abandon him in favor of a stronger ally. He asks France for advice on how to keep his friends, and he tells Italy simply to talk to them (and write down what he wants to say in case he gets nervous). Germany finds the letter and reassures Italy, and the two form the Pact of Steel. On the day Russia arrives to meet with Germany, Italy plans to lurk outside to see what kind of guy Russia is, though he ends up stripping and taking a siesta when the clock strikes 3. When Italy wakes up, he immediately rushes inside and forgets to put in his pants, flashing Russia and the other visiting nations. Germany yells at him for his behavior and gives him his pants to wear, though Russia seems to take delight in the chaos. Italy later shows up as Germany, Austria and Russia prepare to mobilize and invade Poland. He gives Germany food to eat later and tells them both to be careful and not to get hurt, in addition to not doing any of the bad behaviors he himself had been doing previously.

In a supplemental storyline showcasing Italy's childhood (known as "Chibitalia"), he is a frequent victim of bullying - especially at the hands of France and the Holy Roman Empire. While he was initially raised by his grandfather Rome, he is later conquered by Austria and forced to work as a servant in the house of the Holy Roman Empire. Italy is regularly scolded for creating problems by Austria, though he soon becomes the object of affection for Holy Rome, who believes Chibitalia to be a girl. However, Chibitalia is alternatively afraid and reverent around Holy Rome, and their interactions are often awkward or chaotic much to the amusement of fellow servant Hungary. The Holy Roman Empire begins to become unstable, and Holy Rome is forced to leave for war, though he asks Italy to join him and create the most powerful country in the world. Italy refuses, citing his grandfather's painful battle scars, as he does not want to see Holy Rome attacked in such a way. Chibitalia later encounters Holy Rome as he prepares to leave, and he becomes upset and gives Holy Rome his underwear (often at the center of their mishaps) to remember him by. Moved, they share a kiss and Holy Rome leaves for war, promising to return when the war is over.

The title character, Italy has appeared in all five chapters of the main webcomic storyline and all five volumes of the published manga.

Anime
Italy appears in Episode 01, towards the end of the meeting. He offers to speak, but when he is called upon, he lets out a cry of "PASTA~!" instead of presenting data. He is formally introduced in Episode 02, after Germany finds him hiding in the tomato crate, and is taken captive, but eventually kicked out and sent back home after he annoys the other man with a stereotype-filled song about Germans. Italy later returns to work for Germany after becoming poor, and eventually becomes his ally in the lead-up to WWII. In an adaption loosely based off the strip Shouting S.O.S. From the Center of the World, Italy, Germany, and Japan are stranded on a tropical island though Italy doesn't seem too concerned about it. After playing in the water and on the beach, it is revealed that Italy has been buying food from a nearby Chinatown, and they decide to ask China for a ride home the next time he goes to get supplies. The other Allies are also on the island alongside China, and the two parties frequently battle with Italy surrendering immediately and begging for them not to hurt him. His cries are answered twice by the ghost of his grandfather who scares the attackers off, and once by Finland as Santa Claus delivering gifts.

In the film Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White, Italy and his citizens flee their country when the Pict arrive and drain away all the color and turn all who remain into more Pict. After putting their differences aside, the eight nations dress up in Pict costumes that Italy made to play with and enter the ship. Much to Germany's annoyance, Italy brings a stray cat inside with him to play with, which ends up attacking them while they are moving through the vents, leading to their capture by the Pict. As the others try to sway the Pict into enjoying aspects of earth's culture, Italy has to be frequently restrained from interfering and partaking in the activities himself. When the Pict are unimpressed, Italy encourages them to enjoy themselves in a very enthusiastic manner and while the Pict are bewildered by his behavior the nations take the opportunity to bail from the ship.

Italy arrives on the beach of the deserted island and immediately begins to make pasta. The other nations arrive and sit down to eat, but the peace is broken when the Pict arrive. Distressed, Italy's cat runs off into the woods and he chases after it, returning to find that the others have been turned into Pict. As Italy cries out for help, Rome's ghost arrives and distracts the Pict with a song and leaves Italy a sharpie marker. Finally understanding why the Pict were so confused by his mannerisms, Italy decides to brighten them up and uses the sharpie to draw faces on all the Pict. Pleased, the princess of the Pict promises to fix everything and apologizes for the mess they've caused, and Italy gives her the sharpie marker as a parting gift. In a cutaway inter-spliced into the movie's main plot, Chibitalia and Holy Rome are shown in the woods holding hands and staring at one another with affection.

The title character, Italy has appeared in all five seasons of the anime as well as the film. In the anime adaptation, Italy's hair is changed to auburn, while his tie is colored blue. His eyes were also changed to amber, a more "golden" shade than what they appear as in manga illustrations.

Trivia
*The birthdate given in his profile, March 17th, corresponds with the date of the formation of the "Kingdom Of Italy" (Regno d'Italia) in 1861. As Italy is shown in the strips to have existed for centuries before, it is likely that the brothers use the date of the Italian Unification to celebrate their birthdays with, as a unified Italy. The formation date of the Italian Republic (Repubblica Italiana) is actually June 2nd. South Italy is confirmed to be the elder of the two; despite this, some fans continue to mistake them for twins due to having similar hairstyles.
*Though Italy was represented with the flag for the Kingdom Of Italy in the original webcomic, the published manga and later media use the modern Italian flag.
*His full nation name, Italy Veneziano (or just "Veneziano") is derived from Venezia, the Italian name for Venice, a city in Northern Italy. In the strips, he is simply referred to by the others as Italy, with his brother and his grandfather only referring to him as Veneziano. The name North Italy is also used to differentiate him from his brother. In Italian, the word Veneziano has the meaning of "venetian", "native of Venice", but, unlike his brother's second forename, it is no existent male first name. Veneziano can also be seen as a sort of pun for the similar-sounding Japanese phrase "Venezia no", which would mean "of Venice".
*Though his name is derived after Venice, he only seems to represent the Republic itself in the strip where he fights the Ottoman troops. In footnotes to strips such as The War of Austrian Succession, it is shown that he has also been used to represent other northern areas of Italy such as Milan and Piedmont-Sardinia, before the unification of Italy.
*In the strip Let's Assist The French Economy!, his right nipple is revealed to represent Corsica and winds up claimed by France. His right pectoral area is also said to represent both Savoy and Nice.
*In Contrary To The Italian Image, it is revealed in a footnote that Italy suffers from the medical condition phimosis (which makes it difficult for the foreskin of the penis to be retracted), due to Italy ranking #2 in frequent cases of it.
*In the webcomic strip Italy's Big Brother, Germany reveals that Italy happens to share Germanic blood with him (presumably due to the German conquests of Italy after the fall of the Roman Empire). This noticeably angers South Italy, who was later said to be of Arabic blood by Himaruya.
*In a note, Himaruya stated that Italy was not entirely weak, but due to him being cowardly and scared, he does not use his strength. However, as a child, he was shown at one point to be strong enough to defeat Ottoman forces that were invading the Adriatic Sea (referencing how Italian naval troops were thought to be stronger than the ones on land). In another illustration, the female version of Italy is shown to display an incredible bout of strength when angered, much to the surprise of her male counterpart.
*In the special booklet included with the third volume of the published manga, it was revealed that Italy's curl was a last-minute addition to the design to make him look cuter. Himaruya calls the curl "important" now.

Black Hetalia is a fan video (or "MAD"), that uses animation from the anime series Black Lagoon, traced over and redrawn to feature the Hetalia characters. It uses the song "Broken Glass Syndrome" by Halifax, and in two instances, also uses sound from the Black Lagoon anime.

Summary
Prologue
Vietnam bids France farewell, hoping that they'll meet again someday in the same place with a picnic basket. France replies that it sounds wonderful.

Black Hetalia
The video opens with Hungary, asleep in her bed. She opens her eyes. Shots of the five Nordics flash by:

*Sweden, with the glare of his glasses shielding his eyes.

*Finland with guns.

*Norway taking a drink of beer.

*Denmark pulling the finger.

*Iceland surrounded by flames.

A close up of Prussia's eye is shown, as he fires a gun. The camera pans quickly down a hallway, with South Korea and North Korea standing at the end, and cuts to a shot of Lithuania, wielding two guns. Poland rides in on horseback and leaps off his horse, producing three throwing knives in his hand (which he proceeds to throw).

Belarus is shown with a knife, but as she dives down to attack, it appears to morph into a pair of spiked knuckles. Egypt and Latvia face off against each other in a gunfight, while Sealand is also shown to be wielding a gun (and grinning maniacally). Taiwan is shown next attacking with an umbrella, followed by a still shot of Australia and Austria, standing side by side. Switzerland sits in a dark corner, glaring.

The lineups of the Axis Powers and Allied Forces flash by next:

*On the Axis side (from left to right): Finland, Hungary, Austria, Japan, North and South Italy, and Germany.

*On the Allies side (L to R): Canada, America, UK, France, Russia, and China.

The next sequence is of Greece and Bulgaria, facing off in a gunfight. The female version of China darts through the air, holding a pair of cleavers. The next shot is of the two Koreas grinning evilly, followed by a shot of Netherlands and the male and female versions of Hungary (the three figures are all cloaked in shadow).

Germany breaks out a pair of guns, causing Cuba to drop his cigarette. Belgium appears next, with a clover-shaped tattoo on her face (in the Belgian flag colors) and sticking out her tongue. Seychelles leaps down from a high building.

Hong Kong and China fight a bunch of faceless goons, while China charges up to Japan, who fires off a gun. Russia appears next, with Austria and Prussia in the background. He grins evilly and swings out his pipe, as Turkey watches from afar. Lithuania is attacked first by Russia, who then beats a horrified Poland with the pipe (after crushing his hand beneath his boot), causing the screen to become filled with blood. Holy Roman Empire appears next, shown to be firing a large rifle.

Two pairs of green eyes are shown next, the latter pair clearly UK's. Switzerland leaps down to the ground, as a shot of guns follows. The female versions of Spain and Romano ("Romana") are shown, followed by America, who morphs into his female self and does a fast flip through the air. Thailand is shown next, cracking a whip.

The child version of America appears in a window, as UK runs and fires a gun. The adolescent version of America appears in the window next, as America fires a gun back at UK. The window is shown again, now empty, as the two attack each other.

Liechtenstein and her male self ("Rihikun") clasp their hands together as Estonia walks by, talking on a cellphone. The two Liechtensteins proceed to make out. Turkey faces off against some other men with a gun, while Taiwan ducks and rolls. A close up shot of America's face is next, as his glasses ("Texas") appear. A bullet rolls on the ground, and a cigarette is lit.

Chibitalia appears crying on a TV screen, as the female version of UK ("Igiko") continues to smoke. Tibet is shown kneeling in what appears to be a lake of blood, the next shot featuring the female versions of the Axis (Japan, North Italy, and Germany). A portrait of the House Of Habsburg follows that shot, with Austria depicted in the center of the "family":

*On the left side: Holy Roman Empire, Bavaria, Saxony, and Württemberg.

*On the right side: Slovakia holding Czech, Hungary, and Chibitalia.

The camera pans across a group of African nations next: Zimbabwe, Botswana, Ghana, and Uganda. Prussia charges forward and kneels as an explosion goes off.

Liechtenstein and Czech face off against each other with guns, Liechtenstein managing to to fire off a shot, though Slovakia pulls out a gun and also fires. Two female African nations appear, smiling and also wielding guns (which they proceed to fire). The Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus and Sealand are shown running off together.

The five Nordics arm themselves with weapons. Germania is shown next, with his face fading into that of his offspring's (Holy Roman Empire). A sepia-toned shot of North Italy follows, with Ancient Rome's face appearing the background. The shot switches to South Italy, and Rome's face briefly comes to the foreground, before both Italy brothers appear in front of it to hold hands. South Korea and Mongolia appear next, with sinister smiles.

The younger versions of Russia and his sisters are shown, as Russia's arm sweeps off his coat and covers the foreground. The adult Ukraine loads a gun, and the camera cuts to a portrait shot of Japan's six feudal territories (Owari, Kanazawa, Sendai, Aizu, Mito, and Osaka). Japan opens his eyes, and a newspaper article about the Allied Forces' invasion of Italy appears. North Italy is shown next, followed by a shot of a gun-toting Germany. A bullet fires, and the sequence cuts to France, who stares in horror as Jeanne D'Arc is burnt at the stake. UK and Russia grin.

Greece throws on his jacket and readies his guns. China does a flip, crashing through a window. He lands on a car and dents it, as the three Baltics get out their guns (with Estonia wielding two). Cuba is also shown loading his gun, a cigarette hanging from his mouth. A swordfight in front of stained glass is shown next.

Japan rushes into battle, firing a pair of guns. North Italy follows in Japan's lead with his own pair, as Canada falls to the ground holding another pair. He gets up and mouths something to someone offscreen. Kenya appears next, holding a cigar.

South Italy (dressed in blue) fires a gun at the female version of France, who shoots back at him with her own gun. An unknown female African nation circles Rome on a map, and stares at it intently. Hong Kong stands atop a structure holding a pair of guns, while Spain is shown smiling. Switzerland spots Liechtenstein sitting alone in an alleyway in the rain and offers his hand to her, which she grasps. A fiery ship-to-ship combat scene is shown next, as Pirate UK sinks Spain's armada.

Spain enters the ship to fight UK, and brings out his axe. UK apologizes and says that it's the end for Spain, and that it is a "real shame". He continues, saying that Spain will have to apologize for his mischief, and orders for him to kneel. Spain tries to get in a word, but UK repeats for him to "kneel" and shoots him through the leg. Spain falls and stares in shock at his bloodied leg, but tries to get a hit back at UK by throwing his axe (though it misses). Spain grits his teeth in pain as he "kneels". UK watches Spain writhe on the ground in his own blood, and buries his face in his hand. He looks up at the sky, upon where he sees various images:

*Female China, holding her cleavers.
*A teenage version of France.
*Austria vs. Prussia, during the "War Of Austrian Succession".
*Russia with a sinister smile.
*France watching Jeanne's execution.
*Liechtenstein taking Switzerland's hand.
*Spain lying on the ground injured.
*What appears to be Japan, burying his face in hand.
*Poland darting through the air.
*Belarus lifting her skirt to a horrified Russia.
*The child versions of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.
*A teenage version of Hungary.
*Liechtenstein with her gun.
*Germany with his gun out.
*A teenage Switzerland, wearing a suit of armor.
*Japan staring contemplatively (and wearing his housekeeper outfit).
*The female version of Russia, smiling.

The sequence changes to show America, who spots Vietnam. Feathers float by in the sky, as Chibitalia sits in the grass, crying. The shadow of HRE appears in the grass. The younger version of Romano stands up, and is held by Spain. Shots of Germania, Rome, and France follow after.

America points out his gun and fires, as the video cuts to black and ends with his gunshot.

Trivia
*The scene with Russia beating up both Poland and Lithuania is a reference to the partitions of Poland, as is the shot preceding it with Russia, Austria, and Prussia in an alliance.

*The Czech and Slovakia characters in the MAD are based off of two of the potential designs that Hidekaz Himaruya drew for Czechoslovakia. The top two designs in the picture are used for the characters, with Slovakia being an older male and Czech being a young girl. As the actual Liechtenstein had poor relations with both countries (only recently starting relations with them in later 2009), both characters are depicted as her enemies.

*Though there has yet to be an actual North Korea character in canon (despite Himaruya once listing his ideas for one), it is popular for fan designs of one to be a "reverse" of South Korea, and have him/her wear red instead of blue. In the only visible shot of him in the video, he can be seen holding a sort of haegeum (Most likely a sohaegeum,) reflecting Himaruya's idea for North Korea to be a musician-type character.

*Australia and Austria being shown together reflects how the countries' names are often confused with one another. In Hetalia canon, Austria is shown to be very annoyed or depressed if his name gets mistaken as "Australia", as seen in some doodles and a Comic Diary strip. Australia's color scheme was not yet revealed at the time, which lead to him being given light blond hair and a gray uniform in the video (as opposed to brown hair and a tan uniform).

*Although Germany, Japan, and Italy mainly make up the Axis in the Hetalia series, Finland has been confirmed as another member. Historically, Hungary and Austria were also involved, hence their depiction in the Axis lineup.

*Canada was also one of the original historical members of the Allied Forces (and came before America and China), which explains his inclusion in the Allied lineup shot. He is also shown to be a sort of "sixth member" in the series, though his presence is unrecognized by the other five.

*In the Habsburg "family portrait", it is assumed that the other three Germanics are meant to be Bavaria, Saxony, and Württemberg, due to the colors of their clothing matching with the flags for them (though Württemberg became Baden-Württemberg and gained a black-and-yellow flag instead of black-and-red). The designs used are those of HRE's guards from the Chibitalia storyline. Saxony and Bavaria's appearances in the video differ slightly from their canon designs, where Bavaria has short hair and Saxony's hair is longer and more reminiscent of Germania's. This is due to the artist giving Saxony a blue uniform, thus identifying him as "Bavaria" instead, while one of the unnamed Germanics was put in green (thus giving them Saxony's colors).

*The four African nations that appear in the panning shot (Zimbabwe, Botswana, Ghana, and Uganda) all originated from Gakuen Hetalia. In the video, all but Zimbabwe are depicted as being male, while the common assumption in Western fandom is that Botswana and Ghana are female too (despite their genders not being confirmed). Uganda is thought of as either a bald male or a bald female by fans, and is still a subject of debate.

*Kenya also originated from Gakuen, and is one of the few African nations to have her gender confirmed. A character similar in appearance to her appeared in a concept art sheet for the Africa Class, though it is said that all the females in it were intended as models for the uniforms and not specifically the African nations themselves. Despite this, some believed that the short-haired nation in the crop top was meant to be a full design of Zimbabwe. The Africa Class model with the straw hat and the one with glasses also originated from these concept designs.

*The teenage versions of Hungary, France, and Switzerland are based off of designs that Himaruya drew as a "Children's Day" celebration on his blog. He also drew younger versions of Austria, America, Canada, UK, Spain, Liechtenstein, Greece, Japan, Poland, Lithuania and Russia.

*The genderbent versions of certain characters (The Axis, Allies, South Italy, Spain, Hungary, and Liechtenstein) also originated from sketches done by Himaruya. However, Hungary was also originally planned to be a male character and a crossdresser with a Nagoya accent, a concept that Himaruya decided to instead use for Poland (who was originally planned to be female).

*Tibet has only appeared in one canon strip to date (The Story Of China And Teensy Japan) and a sketch of the Asian Nations. It is believed that this is due to the fact that including him in any larger role would have to reference the real-world controversy involving Tibet and the People's Republic Of China. Presumably due to this, Tibet was written out of the anime adaptation of the episode and replaced with a talking panda.

*Mongolia appeared in the aforementioned group sketch as well, though he has yet to have an actual role in the series. He also briefly appeared in the footnotes to Teensy Japan, and is said to have bullied Hungary when they were children.

*Bulgaria has only appeared briefly in one strip in the published version of the manga, as part of the Axis. His appearance was adapted for Episode 27, where he was voiced by Go Inoue.
*TRNC (The Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus) has yet to appear in any actual strips, though he appeared in the first (independent) Hetalia drama CD and was featured in the trading card game. A Cyprus character was also featured in the drama CD, however, since Himaruya has not yet released a design for them, they are not featured in this video.
*Japan's feudal clans/territories have only appeared in the strip The World At War And The Fool Of Owari so far, though the Aizu and Mito characters did make earlier cameos in the strip Black Ships Have Come!. All six of the clans are loosely based off of characters from Himaruya's other webcomic, Advance! Kitakou Broadcasting Club and Barjona Bombers.
*The original ending of the Black Lagoon MAD, which depicts Gretel's death after being shot and an ending shot of Hansel and Gretel, was not referenced for this version. A scene with Balalaika taking place between the prologue and beginning of the "Broken Glass Syndrome" sequence was also excised.

Austria/Switzerland is a slash pairing involving the characters of Austria and Switzerland. This pairing is often called AustroSwiss or Edelweiss, due to their national flower being the same.

In The Strips
When shopping for groceries with Liechtenstein, Switzerland sees Austria (to his annoyance). He notes that Austria goes for the most expensive cheese, and tells himself that he could buy as much as he wants of it with his thrift money, but ends up buying the cheaper cheese, saying it's for the taste, not the price. Austria invites the two to lunch. Though Liechtenstein says "We'd love to" immediately, Switzerland does his best to protest against the idea. He ends up agreeing when he reasons with himself that he would be saving money, to which Austria says "I know, you haven't changed a hair."

When Switzerland wipes Liechtenstein's mouth at lunch, Austria and Switzerland are suddenly reminded of their childhood, since Switzerland did the same thing for Austria. The mood suddenly becomes sullen until Prussia arrives to tell Switzerland that Austria usually "eats like a pauper." Liechtenstein tells Switzerland that that "sounds a lot like him," to which Switzerland replies "I'm not that stingy!"

Another strip shows Switzerland and Austria in their childhood, where they seem to have a much better relationship. A young Switzerland is shown carrying a battered Austria on his back, scolding him for getting beaten 51 ("52!") times. Austria laughs about his situation, to which Switzerland tells him that it isn't funny and that he needs to get a better military. It is revealed that this is a memory that Switzerland had dreamt about, and when he wakes up, he remarks "...Now that I recall... he hasn't chuckled like that in years..."

Later, Liechtenstein and Switzerland are seen relaxing by a lake, when Liechtenstein places her hand on Switzerland's. He seems to be at peace, until he suddenly remembers a similar situation from his childhood with Austria and himself (a young Austria shown to be smiling). Switzerland then puts a bucket(and that is where "my life in a bucket" came from) on his head and punches it repeatedly, exclaiming "WHY AM I THINKING ABOUT THAT GUY!?" Later, he is shown complaining about Austria appearing in his imagination "without his permission," and stating that he will have to complain about it to Austria tomorrow.

Fan Speculations
Upon first glance, Austria's aristocratic attitude and Switzerland's more violent behavior would not mesh well. However, some supporters of this pairing claim that they are tsundere towards each other. It can also be noted that the pairing has strong ties to each other. When polled in 2008 Swiss voted Austrians as their closes friends and most liked citizens (even over Liechtenstein) and Austria as well has shown to be very caring towards the neutral nation. Often saying in official statements their love of the people and the nation.
The second volume of Hetalia: Axis Powers was released in Japan by the publisher Gentosha. It contains several strips from the original webcomic series, as well as new material. The titles used below are from the Tokyopop translation of Volume 2 released in North America.
Chapters
A poem is included in front of the book about the roles of the French, British, Germans, Swiss, and Italians in heaven and hell. This was adapted into the song "Heaven And Hell On Earth", which was featured in Episode 18 of the anime and the film Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White.

Christmas at Hetalia Academy
In a Christmas-themed chapter taking place in the Gakuen Hetalia universe, Germany, Italy, and Japan interview their fellow students to learn about their Christmas traditions. After interviewing America, France, Russia, and China, the three choose to interveiw Finland and make his traditions a central part of the article. Happy with the information, Germany suggests that they all spend Christmas together. The chapter was adapted in Episode 31 of the anime.

Grandpa Rome Pays a Visit
Germany awakes to Italy's grandfather, Ancient Rome, staring down at him. Rome has left the afterlife to pay his grandson a visit. Whilst there, he informs Germany of his history and cuisine, though is unable to clarify how he disappeared. Germany sleeps in the next day, so Italy and Japan plan to celebrate Italy waking up earlier than him. In an unrelated strip, Germania becomes annoyed by Rome's focus on women, fighting, and alcohol.
Greece and Japan's Easygoing Relationship
Greece and Japan get to know each other and explore aspects of Greek culture, Japanese language, and Greek mythology. Later, Turkey arrives, jealous over Greece's apparent friendship with Japan. In order to restore peace, Japan plays a simple trick, confusing both Greece and Turkey. In a final strip, Greece attempts to "train" Japan to become angry. He succeeds and asks to borrow Turkey's camera to take pictures.
In Japan, America reacts with enthusiasm everywhere they visit, recieves a tissue packet with an advertisement for a brothel on the packaging, and becomes distressed at a normal-sized serving of Fries. Both of them also discover commonalities, such as fondness for "Boy One, Get One Free" deals. ==Notes==
*The poem at the beginning of the book is a redrawn version of the end of chapter two of the original webcomic.
*Grandpa Rome Pays a Visit is a redrawn version of the Extra Story Together with Grandpa Rome. The ending bit, where it was revealed that Rome tied up God to escape the afterlife, was removed, along with a strip where Rome makes a nude sculpture of Germany and an omake illustration of Rome visiting Romano in his sleep. The scenes with Italy were also redrawn to further conceal his nudity.
*Liechtenstein's Doting Brother Diaries reprints the first two strips from Liechtenstein's Journal of Swiss Dopiness. It diverges from the original, where Switzerland and Liechtenstein run into Austria and they have an awkward lunch together. Instead, Switzerland spots Austria and is able to avoid him, taking Liechtenstein home to go over defense strategy. The nighttime scenes remain similar, but depict Liechtenstein's back-story as a dream sequence instead of Switzerland and Austria's past. Additionally, the strip Liechtenstein vs England is a redrawn version of a strip from Comic Diary 10.
*Battle for the New World is a direct reprint of the Extra Story The Battle for America, though the beginning with Finland and Sweden was removed.
*Don't Give Up, Canada is a direct reprint of the Extra Story Fly, Canada-san, Fly! with some omake illustrations omitted and the second G8 Meeting strip moved to the end.
*English and Japanese Monster Culture is a direct reprint of the Extra Story Ghost Culture of England and Japan with the final omake omitted.

Appearance
Austria has violet eyes and somewhat wavy brown hair, with a wild strand that represents Mariazell. He doesn't smile often and "doesn't need to". He wears glasses, a long navy blue coat with a white jabot, and black pants (colored tan in some earlier artwork). He also has a mole on his face, which acts as an erogenous zone for him. Under his clothes, he appears to wear a corset.

When he was younger (as seen in Chibitalia), he wore a deep fuchsia jacket and purple pants. In the anime version of the storyline, his jacket was changed to blue and his pants were changed to black, to match the clothing he wears as an adult.

During The War of the Austrian Succession and The Seven Years' War, he's also seen wearing a white military uniform based on that worn by Austrian soldiers in the 18th Century, although the cover of Volume 5 shows him in a uniform similar to Prussia's.

More often than not, he's often depicted as wearing suits that look outdated compared to the rest of the cast, with the jabot usually serving as the constant trait. There is even official artwork of him gardening in what appeared to be 18th Century casual-wear.

Personality and Interests
He is described as a well-spoken, young master type, who was initially aloof until he was saddled with too many burdens. He gives higher priority to his hobbies rather than his work, and is more optimistic, easygoing, and quiet in comparison to Germany who is more serious and work-oriented. His interests are art, music (the piano in particular), and cake. In the first drama CD, it is revealed he is not an outdoors person and is afraid of marine animals (such as crabs and starfish). It's been remarked that he keeps his home tidy, but not very orderly, and his underwear was scattered about his house in rather random places. He's also rather knowledgeable about underwear in general, something both Prussia and Germany acknowledged. Despite being musically talented, he has no sense of direction and frequently gets lost; this is based on a joke Himaruya heard about an Austrian salesperson getting lost in his own storehouse. According to Austria, unlike Germany, he's not very good at taking the initiative when it comes to stating his opinion. He seems to be camera shy, or at least in regards to events which are broadcast worldwide and his embarrassment was strong enough that he may have begun to sing. When Germany was going to take a picture, he immediately hid his face. He also remarked his inability to "skillfully put together a pose" as Germany was. In response to his being upset about the broadcasting of the event, Germany remarked that he hadn't read the invitation properly.

Austria is apparently out of shape, walks rather slow, and has a very indoor lifestyle which has caused this, all of which he admits to, though Hungary said that he was different when he was younger. Austria warned others to take care to avoid such a thing happening to them.

Relationships
Germany
Main Article: Germany

Austria and Germany were allied in both World Wars, and lived together for a while during that time. He gives Germany advice in his confusion over Italy in the Valentines Day strips. They appear to be very close, although he annoys Germany at times with his behavior. Austria relies on Germany quite a bit in modern times and is said to immediately get a high fever if Germany so much as catches a small cold. Whenever something goes wrong, while he'll admit to being at fault, he blames Germany for everything citing things as always being his fault, much to Germany's confusion. Germany also accompanies Austria to meetings. Because he relies on him, Austria often makes unreasonable requests of Germany, such as asking him to take the starting block position so that he could sit on his back and rest, possibly dramatizing his weariness in order to get his way.

Hungary
Main article: Hungary

The two still have a very close relationship, despite the dissolution of their alliance and marriage. The marriage was mostly a valuable war alliance, as the two promised that they would support each other in war. As children, he was often beaten up and defeated by her when it came to wars, but when they got older, she was forced into becoming his servant while they were both under the rule of Holy Roman Empire.

Throughout the anime and manga, the two share many moments that suggest that they still have feelings for one another. For example, in the Buon San Valentino strips, Hungary is given a gift from an anonymous source, but when described the man has many of the same facial features that Austria has. She also seems to enjoy watching him play the piano. When Germany was sent to forcibly annex Austria, Hungary tried to stop him, asking him "to please consider his feelings."

Italy
Main Article: Italy

Chibitalia spent a lot of time at Austria's house where he acted as a maid. Austria was one of the many people to believe Italy was a girl until one day his voice finally broke, with Austria thinking he "had a feeling this would happen for some reason."

Prussia
Main Article: Prussia

Prussia takes pleasure in annoying and humiliating him in whatever ways he can, and had fought against him in wars in the past, most notably seizing Silesia for himself in the War Of Austrian Succession.

On numerous occasions when he finds himself alone and crying, Prussia will mention that he is happy alone unlike a certain "stupid aristocrat". In the Christmas Strips, Prussia has to tell himself that he rather be alone than be with others "because clustering is for the weak. Yeah, like that stupid aristocr--". Prussia often talks about Austria in a negative tone. In the Maria Theresa arc of the anime, Prussia seems to be hell-bent on humiliating Austria, and shows, on multiple occasions throughout the episodes, a strong desire to see Austria beg for his mercy during the battles. He went so far as to hire a painter to paint Austria's face and defeat so that his failure would forever be a part of history.

In the present day while living with his brother, Prussia also freeloads off of Austria and has a habit of stalking him. Also, in Prussia's blog, it is implied that either Prussia and Austria are both living together in Germany's house, or that Austria associates with the brothers very often to sort out their messes.

Switzerland
Main Article: Switzerland

A former childhood friend of Austria's. In their youth, they were close, but Austria was weak and unable to fight as well as Switzerland expected him to, and had to be bailed out when he'd get beaten up in war.

They eventually grew apart, and Switzerland denies that the two of them ever used to be friends. Although he did, Switzerland still never forgot the times when they were.

Appearances
Anime
Austria made a very brief appearance during the Chibitalia segment in Episode 02 as one of four characters kicking Chibitalia in the air. In Episode 04, he gained control over and made Chibitalia his servant. Later on, he became the parental figure for Chibitalia and some other young countries, scolding them when they did things wrong but also inviting Chibitalia in to listen to his piano skills.

In Episode 06, we see an adult Austria for the first time.

Manga
Austria made his first official appearance in Volume One of the published manga, stating that Germany was an "idiot" for allying himself with Italy. He then took to his piano to express his anger through Chopin.

Trivia
*The date given for his birthday, October 26th, is also the date of Austria's national holiday. It celebrates Austria's Declaration of Neutrality, signed in 1955.
*Austria is the only character given an outright "birth year" (976) in his profile, though Korea originally had one as well (1919). The "birth year" corresponds with the year that the East Bavarian March (Babenburg Austria) was founded, which Austria grew from.
*June 8th, his and Hungary's wedding day, corresponds with the date of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise.
*In a character note, it says he spent some time in a wheelchair.
*Also in a character note, it says he wears glasses not because he has bad eyesight, but because he thinks he would look plain without them.
** It is said ALSO in a character note, that when Austria was a baby, he would scream until his head falls off.
* It seems that Austria's natural hair is straight as seen in flashbacks of him as a child, a drawing by Himaruya of a few countries eating breakfast, and a Chibitalia strip in which he combs his hair to achieve his wavy-esque hairstyle.
Greece has brown hair, green eyes, and skin that is alternatively fair or olive depending on the artwork. He wears a brown jacket, with brown pants and a white t-shirt. He occasionally wears a brown hat. In artwork, he is shown to carry a giant cross, which represents Mount Athos.

In a color chart for the characters by Himaruya, his eyes were shown to be teal. However, in all of the actual artwork for the manga, his eyes are colored green.

Personality and Interests
He is said to have a serious personality, but he often seems carefree and casual. He is often seen with cats, a reference to Greece's stray cat population. He loves naps and is often seen sleeping, but even though it seems there is nothing in his head, he has a love for philosophy and history, and thinks about all sorts of things. It is said that if you dig in his backyard, you'll find many ancient ruins and things belonging to his mother, Ancient Greece.

It is also implied that he frequently takes part in sexual activity; this is shown in a contribution Himaruya made to a Hetalia doujinshi anthology where England and France try to place the "blame" of the creation of the condom on him, seeing as he uses it very often. He replies by saying that while he does do these "activities" often, he doesn't really use condoms.

Relationships
Japan
Main Article: Japan

The two get along pretty well, due to their countries' good relationship (see Greece–Japan relations), and also share a love of cats. It's strongly implied that they once slept together during Greece's first visit to Japan (where they discussed the results of a sex frequency poll, Greece being the highest and Japan the lowest), but Japan denies it, believing that "It was a dream!".

Turkey
Main Article: Turkey

The two of them don't get along, and often fought with each other before finally deciding on a cease-fire. Even so, they're still ready to fight over anything, and Turkey takes pleasure in whatever he's able to beat Greece at. One of the most frequent fights between them is about who Japan likes more, though as Japan proved they are very easy to distract and entertain. In the Christmas 2011 strips they seemed to enjoy each others company when Turkey began telling stories and also when Greece entered 'Philosopher Mode'.

Cyprus
Main Article: Cyprus

Cyprus is close with Greece, and it is mentioned that he was raised by Greece's mother. As a result, Greece will get into fights with Turkey over matters involving TRNC, which annoys Cyprus, who encourages Greece to try and get along with Turkey.

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
Main Article: Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

Greece openly despises TRNC, even threatening to disown Cyprus unless he stops communicating with Turkey. Comparatively, TRNC dislikes Greece's constant fights and struggles with Turkey, and aids Turkey in any conflicts with Greece.

Appearances
Anime
Greece first appeared in Episode 01, where he was shown sleeping during the world meeting. He later shows up in Episode 14 at the supermarket, handing Spain his groceries and taking his time in doing so.

He previews after the credits of Episode 34 walking behind Canada with a cat hanging off the front of his shirt, before finally having a speaking role in Episode 35, conversing with France about the Olympics.

Trivia
*Greece's birthday was originally listed as October 28th, but was retconned to February 3rd by the time the published manga was released. His first retconned birthdate corresponds to the date that Greece's independence (from the Ottoman Empire) was officially recognized in the London Protocol, on February 3rd, 1830. Greece's 2010 profile, however, changed his birthday to March 25th, corresponding to Greece's national day of independence to commemorate the Greek Revolution.
*An early draft for a Greece character shows him as a short-haired man with glasses. It first appeared on the Bamboo Thicket blog, though Himaruya left the identity of the nation for viewers to guess. The character was later outed as an early Greece in the special edition booklet that came with Hetalia: Axis Powers volume 3. Himaruya noted that the design was his perception of Greeks, but that it changed after he met a few Greek people.
*Greece is GAY! GAY! GAY! GAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are many animals that appear in Hetalia: Axis Powers. This article includes information about the characters' pets and other animals that appear in the series.

By country
America
When ordered to "go make friends" in Japan, America befriended this whale. Later, it is shown to be living in a pool in America's backyard. It has a fondness for Lithuania, much to Tony's jealousy. It's a rather strange-looking whale as Himaruya's referred to it as being "unidentifiable." A white, fluffy cat is shown as America's pet in Why Americans Love Spring. Another cat that resembles its master (down to a "Nantucket" hair) is shown in some Nekotalia sketches and in a panel in volume 3's fake summary of events. Possibly inspired by the pun on his name (usa, which looks similar to U.S.A, means "bunny" in Japanese), young America is often shown either holding or playing with a brown and white rabbit. America also takes care of a unicorn that "flew out of the forest" to meet him(though England also gave him a unicorn for his birthday, and it's unknown if it's the same one.) He actually cannot see the unicorn, but he manages to take care of it. Tony sees the unicorn as a rival.

Australia
In his introductory sketches, Australia is shown to own an angry-looking koala. It's possible this is a joking reference to Australian "drop bears".

Cameroon
Cameroon is revealed to have a pet lion cub named Kokolo in his appearance in the special edition booklet of Hetalia: Axis Powers volume 3. In the Halloween 2011 event, it is revealed that Kokolo is a University of Glasgow fine arts graduate.

Canada
Kumajirou is a small white bear who belongs to Canada. He is known for saying "who are you?" to Canada and rarely says anything else. However, it's said no one can get his name right. He's very apathetic but might be good at taking care of people. He is most likely a Polar bear, though some fans hypothesize he may be a Kermode bear instead. This has not been confirmed one way or another in the manga, although in one piece of art Germany does mistake Kumajirou for Knut (a baby polar bear from Germany), lending support to that idea and supporting peoples' difficulty to remember his name. Kumajiro is voiced by Ai Iwamura.

China
China has a panda that he often carries around with him in a bamboo basket that he slings over his back, according to a recent blog post, it is always a different one. China has also been seen with a life-sized panda that he calls Mr. Panda. But the panda was replaced by a giant kitty on Christmas.
England
In some comics, a younger version of England is shown to have had a rabbit that followed him around.

Finland
Finland and, by extension, Sweden, own Hanatamago, a small white dog. She is able to talk in Christmas specials, where she once wished she had a normal name like 'Charlotte', and that she didn't like the things that Finland feeds her. A recent blog post described her as friendly, bright, calm, and fluffy.

France
France has several small birds, all named Pierre, who are used to send letters and messages to Spain and other nations. Italy commented on Prussia's blog and asked if his bird could do the same. They are all voiced by Ai Orikasa.

Germany
Germany has three dogs shown and named in canon: Blackie, Berlitz, and Aster, all three of which are mentioned in his version of Hatafutte Parade. Blackie is believed to be a Dachshund, Berlitz is a male German Shepherd, and Aster appears to be a Hovawart. All of his dogs are said to be particularly wild and enjoy running around in the hills and will often get dirty because of it. Aster appears to be friendly with Luxembourg's dog.
A fourth, unnamed dog and its puppy have been shown in the trading card set. They appear to be Dalmatians. Germany is depicted in Red Panties with a dog, as well as a black cat voiced by: Aki Kanada. He is later shown to own a deep gray cat that has a personality much like his own, identified as Germany-cat and voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto.

Greece
Greece has many cats that live in his house and follow him around, parodying the large amount of stray cats found in Greece. Most of them are not named, as Japan found out while talking to Greece.

Iceland
Iceland is often drawn with a puffin-like bird, who claims to be his mascot. He follows Iceland and eats fish, however he's been shown eating licorice with Iceland, and sang with Iceland about drinking Brennivín. In the volume 3 special booklet, he is briefly mentioned in notes accompanying artwork with Iceland, where Himaruya states that his name is Mr. Puffin. He is differentiated from other puffins with his black belly and red bow tie. It is said that Mr. Puffin may look cute, but he speaks and acts like a mafioso. He is haughty and attempts to take credit for things he did not do, and prides himself on how cute he is, expecting compliments from people, especially Iceland. He gets offended whenever he's told otherwise. In a recent blog post, he was described as being devious, cute but with a foul mouth, and someone who roams around a lot. It's said his relationship with Iceland is "interesting." Mr. Puffin is voiced by Masaya Onosaka.

Japan
Pochi (or Pochi-kun), is a small brown (sometimes colored white) fluffy Shiba dog that belongs to Japan. He is often shown with his master, and has appeared in a sketch with Hanatamago and another with one of France's Pierres. It is revealed in a later strip that Pochi is as reserved as his master, becoming angered when Netherlands's pet rabbit licked him and ordering it to take responsibility. He's apparently rather manly for such a small dog. He tends to follow people around. Pochi is voiced by Aki Kanada.

Netherlands
In one strip, Netherlands is shown to have a pet rabbit with a heart-shaped spot on its back. Character notes reveal it to be a Holland Lop. The rabbit is able to communicate with Pochi, and reveals that its master has become lonely due to the conflict with Belgium. Further character notes reveal it to be lazy and not like leaving the house much and that it sleeps a lot. It loves to have the base of it's ears scratched.

New Zealand
New Zealand has been drawn with a sheep on the Hetalia World Map from volume 3 of the manga. It parodies the fact that there are more sheep in New Zealand than there are people. In a recent design sketch of New Zealand, he is shown to be holding a kiwi, a small bird that is native to New Zealand.

Lithuania
Lithuania as a child owned a little brown dog, he says it is usually quiet, but when they met Russia, it couldn't help but to bark at him. It was then calmed down by its owner.

Luxembourg
Pelze is Luxembourg's small, somewhat chubby dog that first appeared in the Halloween 2011 strip. Pelze means "furs" in German. Character notes reveal that she is soft, kind, and doesn't bark much. Unlike many other animals, she can't speak human languages, as well. She's friendly with one of Germany's dogs, presumably Aster.

Poland
Poland first reveals he has a pony to France and England when they ask him if he has made preparations for a fight against Germany. He also appears with this pony in the film, though both wind up attacked and transformed by the Pict aliens. The pony is voiced by Masaya Onosaka.

Prussia
Prussia has a small yellow bird, which often rides on his head. He didn't know about the bird until he started a blog and someone emailed him about it. The bird does not have an official name. However, it is referred to by much of the English-speaking fandom as "Gilbird," referring to Prussia's human name, Gilbert. Other sketches have shown him to have several of the birds. In the anime, a bird used to send a letter to Austria is shown to be this same type of bird and communicates by making angry grunts (as opposed to the peeping birds in the drama CD). Prussia's bird is voiced by Atsushi Kousaka.

Russia
In the Nekotalia strips in volume 3, Russia is shown to own a large cat that somewhat resembles him, right down to his prominent nose. It attempts to make friends with the Italy brothers' cats, though Belarus's cat becomes very jealous. In the 2008 April 1st strip, we see Spain reporting on strange international news. Towards the beginning, he mentions that rabbits had retreated to the mountains very suddenly. The strip includes a picture of Russia happily petting one of these rabbits.

Sealand
In a recent image profile of Sealand, he is seen with a seagull to his right wearing a sailor's cap that is a little different than Sealand's hat.

Spain
A small bull sometimes shows up alongside Spain to aid him. The bull charged into the Ottoman Empire's carriage after to break Romano free and was later used to carry him back home. He also attacked France from behind during The Battle of Garigliano. During the April Fool's fake news report, the bull sat next to Spain with his own name tag that reads as "cattle" or "cow". The bull is voiced by Keikou Sakai.

Switzerland
Eiger, Jungfrau ('Virgin') , and Mönch ('Monk') are the names of Switzerland's pet goats, all named after Swiss mountains. He is pictured with one on the official Hetalia calendar. They're docile but apparently have a big attitude.

Thailand
According to a recent blog entry, Thailand has a male elephant named Toto, whom he dotes on ridiculously to the point of it being overweight. The elephant also has a fluffy speech pattern, especially when compared to Iceland's puffin.

Others
England's Magical Creatures
England has various magical creatures that appear before him, such as fairies, pixies, unicorns, and a little winged rabbit. Fanon has suggested various different names for his unicorn, and the green flying fairy-rabbit suggested as being Arthur's magical familiar, or even a pooka. In the English dub, he refers to the fairy rabbit as "Flying Mint Bunny", indicating that the rabbit has no real name in either version (although it has been reported that Himaruya calls the rabbit Yousei-san (妖精さん), or fairy in English).

Japan's Magical Creatures
*Voiced by: Hozumi Gōda (Kappa), Takahiro Mizushima (Youkai/"Onion Head"), and Yuki Kaida (Zashiki-warashi)

Along with England, Japan also has a number of magical creatures, including a kappa, a youkai (in this case, a talking onion-headed creature), and a zashiki-warashi. In Episode 30, England is able to see and even talk to these creatures. They explain that back in the day, some humans feared them while others believed in them and could see them, Japan included. However, in the new era, nobody acknowledges their existence anymore and they have become mere superstition. They also mention that they used to have conversations with Japan, but, like everyone else, he has stopped believing in their existence.

Kitty
*Voiced by: Aki Kanada

Kitty is a brown cat that appeared with Italy in Episode 13, and again with Japan in Episode 19, as well as some random points in the anime and manga. It also appears in Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White. In the dub, Italy also refers to it as 'Pooky', or spelled as 'Pookie', and mentions that it is female.
Norway's Magical Creatures
Norway is shown to have creature companions from Norse mythology. He's often drawn with a troll or a chubby green pixie/fairy, but is said to also have a nisse.

Pict Aliens
*Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi

A species of aliens that appear in the film Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White. They are all white and featureless figures with an antenna protruding from their heads, with no discernible differences to tell them apart as they act as a hive mind; their princess, however, can take a more defined, human-like shape. Those exposed to the light produced by the Pict are transformed into them and become part of the hive, though the stronger a person's happiness is, the more resistance they have to being fully converted.

Tony
*Voiced by: Hiroki Yasumoto (drama CD), Ai Orikasa (anime)

An alien who came to live with America after the Roswell Incident. He seems to have hated England ever since they first met, going as far as to call him a "fucking limey" but in the dubbed version, tony said "limey bastard" ('limey' being a negative slang term for 'British'). He seems to be quite fond of Lithuania, though, trying to abduct him with a spaceship and getting jealous whenever he spends more time with America's whale. In one of the mini dramas, he ends his sentences with "bubu". He also appears to have knowledge about other planets and aliens, as shown in Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White .

Turtles
When Spain was out at a restaurant with Romano, he attempted to cheer him up by exclaiming that even the turtles were worried over him, causing Romano to discover that turtles were inside the restaurant. Spain then wondered what they should name the turtles, though a policeman ordered him to give them back.

The turtles have appeared in a short clip of Episode 92.
