Nero (ネロちゃん Nero-chan?) is the fifth emperor of the Roman Empire. He is nicknamed "The Tyrant", though other aspects of the character are more emphasized in his portrayal in Hetalia, focusing on his younger years before the death of his mother Agrippina.[17] He is the emperor that appears most frequently in the manga, and appeared in banner artwork alongside Italy advertising the production of Hetalia: World☆Stars.

Seneca

Seneca the Younger.png

Seneca (セネカ Seneka?) is a philosopher, playwright, scientist, and politician who served as Nero's tutor after Anicetus was fired. After Nero becomes emperor, Seneca continues to support him as an adviser.

Born in Córdoba, he is described as a "super old man" who has really accurate prophetic dreams. He is depicted with gray hair and wears a colorful toga and sandals. A chibi illustration depicts him surrounded by a publication that he had written on a scroll.[18][19] Prior to becoming Nero's tutor, he was exiled to an island because he was good at so many things and people were scared of him. After Nero becomes emperor, Seneca continues to patiently support him and act as a supervisor of sorts, though he babies Nero quite a bit too. Nero himself describes Seneca as Money Hungry, and as someone who eats all of his sweets whenever he visits his house.[20]

After Agrippina was successful, she cursed Nero and his "Mother Complex" and paid her, much to Nero's horror.[17] Later on, it is explained that Agrippina harasses "the girl he [Nero] likes" all day long, at one point sending her a letter cursing bad luck and deep wrinkles on her unless she stays away from Nero.[20]

Nero (ネロちゃん Nero-chan?) is the fifth emperor of the Roman Empire. He is nicknamed "The Tyrant", though other aspects of the character are more emphasized in his portrayal in Hetalia, focusing on his younger years before the death of his mother Agrippina.[1]

Attributes

A 'chibi' version of Nero from the Shonen Jump+ website.

Appearance

Originally, he was depicted as a larger, muscular man with dark hair.[2][3] After doing some research on his appearance, however, Himaruya changed his design. In his new design he is shown as a "subculture dude with bright hair and light-blue eyes,"[4]. He is on the chubbier side,[5][1] though his hands and feet were slender.[6] Similar to the character designs of the Italian nations, he is depicted with a hair curl. He is shown wearing a crown, a toga, and sandals.[5]

Personality and Interests

Growing up while his mother was in exile, he developed a love of Greek culture and art,[1] and wanted to be a poet and join a theatre company when he grew up. However, when he began living with his mother again, she began bullying him into striving for the position of emperor. At age 17 he successfully became emperor, though he did not give up his dreams of being a poet, and is shown in various strips writing poems and playing music.[7] According to his profile, the hardest blow for him is when someone makes fun of his poems and he likes to be the center of attention.[1] At one point when he is knocked unconcious, he dreams that he is being welcomed into a theater troupe.[6]

Despite his negativity about being emperor, he's hopeful he'll make a good one with the help of those around him, though he openly admits he's not very good at it.[1][8] Character notes say that he's the type who wants to be ordered around by his girlfriend. He is shown to have an infatuation with a woman named Poppaea.[1] However, in a discarded strip, he says that he's afraid of Roman women and is worried he won't find a lover ever again. He says lately has been thinking that a cute boy wouldn't be bad instead, before leaning towards Anicetus.[3]

While his future as the Tyrant is only alluded to briefly, an earlier cameo details how late in life he competed in the Olympics, using his power and influence to win seven categories including a singing competition where he had an awful voice. As a result the singing competition was abolished following his death.[2]

Relationships

Main article: Ancient Roman historical characters#Nero (54-68 CE)

Agrippina

His relationship with his mother is largely fear based, as she is regularly shown tricking and intimidating him.[1][7] Upon getting drunk, he begins to talk about how she's scary and has a death grip on his life and he's sick of it.[6]

Anicetus

Anicetus shows very little respect to Nero, despite his being emperor, calling him a brat and openly telling him that his poems are bad. [8] However, he does respect Nero to a certain extent, it just doesn't show in his attitude. Nero on the other hand is very friendly towards his former teacher and frequently calls him by nicknames including "Ani" and "Anice", much to Anicetus' annoyance.

Burrus

Burrus' job is to protect Nero and is usually strict with him, though he occasionally indulges him as well. Nero has a high opinion of Burrus, telling Anicetus that he is "highly talented". [8]

Seneca

Seneca is another of Nero's former tutors who patiently supports him and babies him. Nero however appears to think of him simply as being greedy. [8]

Appearances

Manga

Nero originally made a cameo appearance several years before his official debut in France and the Olympia Romance in a footnote about his participation in the 67 CE Olympics.[2] This strip was later collected as a part of Volume 2. He makes his official debut in the second serialized chapter of World☆Stars, beginning an ongoing storyline following his early exploits as emperor of Rome.[1] Further storylines in the serialization involve him trying to deal with his mother Agrippina, who in many ways has become more of an emperor than he has, and becoming reacquainted with his childhood tutor Anicetus, whom he meets after getting into a fight with some men on the street.[7][6][8] In a strip using his old character design posted to Bamboo Thicket, he has difficulty remembering how old Anicetus is because his memories of his childhood were largely focused on himself.[3]
