Hetalia: The World Twinkle, based on the webmanga Hetalia: Axis Powers by Hidekaz Himaruya, premiered on July 3, 2015^[2]^[3]^[5] for streaming on the Docomo Anime Store, though the first three episodes received an early release for paying Docomo subscribers on June 27, 2015.^[6] It is also the sixth season overall of the anime series Hetalia. It follows the adventures of anthropomorphic countries as they live through historical events and interact with one another with a focus on differences in culture and positive and negative Japanese stereotypes of other countries.

Like the previous season, the majority of the episodes adapted one chapter or story from the original source material rather than spreading them out over a number of episodes. Multi-episode storylines include England and America trying to cooperate with one another as they face off against Italy and Germany on the African Front of the Second World War, The Nordic countries showcasing their eccentricities, and Sealand and his friends searching the world to find more micronations to become friends with.

Three DVD Volumes containing episodes from the sixth season were released in Japan between October 28, 2015 and December 25, 2015. Each volume contained five of the originally broadcast episodes along with an additional unstreamed episode, and were originally released as limited edition packages containing a special CD with 2-3 alternate versions of the Hetalian☆Jet theme song sung by a different character. An additional unstreamed episode was included in the The World Twinkle Extra Disc which was released in Japan on February 24, 2016.^[7] The entire sixth season will be released in one box set on August 23, 2017.^[8]

On June 29, 2015 Funimation announced they had obtained streaming rights for the series in North America,^[9] and on July 6, AnimeLab announced they had obtained streaming rights for the series in Australia and New Zealand^[10], with Viewster beginning their simulcast in the UK on July 31, 2015.^[11] Funimation revealed at Otakon 2016 that they acquired the Home video rights for the series,^[12] and released the complete sixth season on November 8, 2016.^[13] This release was distributed by Madman Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand.^[14]

Development

It was announced in the January 2015 edition of Comic Birz released in November 2014, with more information to follow. The announcement suggests that it will use the same visual style employed in the previous season, Hetalia: The Beautiful World.^[15] On December 9, 2014 it was announced that the staff and cast from Hetalia: The Beautiful World would reprise their roles in the series.^[16] The series will also feature a new theme song, Hetalian☆Jet, sung by Daisuke Namikawa as Italy.^[17]^[18]

Advertising producer Tomoko Sakaino revealed information about the season in the April 2015 issue of OTOMEDIA, including that it would primarily be centered on content from Axis Powers Volumes 5 and 6. This included an episode about the Micronations, an episode about the Nordics, a Nekotalia episode, an episode about Prussia being a noble character, a silent episode, and an episode with content not found in the original comics.^[19]
