Germany/South Italy is a slash pairing in the series Hetalia: Axis Powers, involving the characters of Germany and South Italy aka Romano. The pairing is also referred to as Germano.

First Meeting

When South Italy first meets Germany, he tells him to eat bullets, calling him a "potato bastard". But right before that he looks and acts really shy. In further confrontations he threatens to use violence, though he never does and is probably not even able to. He seems to hate Germany with a passion, but he is probably just hoping to protect his brother from the outside world and the "bad influence" of Germany.

Fan Speculations

Also discussed is the possibility that Romano is jealous of all the love Veneciano gets. After being always the second choice, Romano built a shell around him to protect him...unfortunately he doesn't notice that this is just the "I hurt you so you can't hurt me"- way.

Hate?

After all the threats, insults and verbal bullying, Germany still feels mostly neutral about the southern part of Italy and doesn't fight back when talking to him. So you cannot write their relation off as "hate". With this couple you can choose every genre. Angst, fluff and horror fit well with them, though angst or hurt/comfort is most common.

Probably the most important "Germano"-episode besides Episode 07 is Episode 53. Romano shares the habit of his brother, not knowing how to throw a grenade and throwing the pin instead of the grenade itself, leaving it stuck in his mouth. Germany freaks out completely, showing that he is really concerned about South Italy's well-being. We don't know how it ends and therefore have no idea as to how Romano survived.
