Spain/South Italy is a popular slash pairing in the series Axis Powers Hetalia, involving the characters of Spain and South Italy (also referred to as Romano).

The pairing is also referred to as Spero by some fans, from the first syllables of Spain and Romano in Japanese. It is also called Spamano, combining Spain and Romano.

Childhood
Spain and Romano grew up in the middle of the Roman Empire, though after Grandpa Rome vanished, Spain and the other children began to bully Romano and his younger brother Veneziano (also referred to as Ita-chan, or Chibitalia) for their land and art.

Soon after this, Austria and France went to war over ownership of Chibitalia. After a long period of war (The Italian Wars), Austria claimed Chibitalia as his own, on behalf of the Holy Roman Empire.

Austria proceeded to hand custody of Romano over to Spain, marking the beginning of his control over Southern Italy.

The Era Of Boss Spain
Though Spain at first was overjoyed to get his own servant, he quickly found that the younger Romano was disobedient, lazy, and had problems with wetting the bed, as well as being a challenge to handle in general. France insisted that he take care of Romano instead, but Spain refused to give him up.

After seeing how careless Romano was at handling chores, Spain begged Austria to exchange Chibitalia with him (due to seeing that the child was more obedient, polite, and "cuter" than his Italy), though he wasn't successful. In Axis Powers Hetalia volume 1, it is revealed that Romano also had the disease Chorea, though he eventually was cured of the disease shortly after Spain made him dance the Tarantella.

The younger Romano often felt weak and useless, and was jealous of the attention his brother got in comparison to him, as well as his brother's natural talents. He also believed France and Spain were only using him to get a claim on his late grandfather's inheritance. However, Spain was unaware of his feelings and simply believed that Romano hated him.

When the time came for Romano to go on a trip back to his homeland, he insisted that he go alone, though unbeknownst to him, France still had the intention of becoming his boss. Romano subsequently wound up kidnapped by Turkey, who was planning to conquer Europe to begin with. Spain managed to rescue Romano, but the war with Turkey was far from over.

In order to protect his servant, Spain wound up throwing himself further into poverty by selling most of his assets to Turkey.

Though Romano would often claim that he hated Spain, he had the tendency of becoming extremely jealous when his boss was in the company of others, especially in the case of a German soldier (where he believed Spain was also in danger). Spain remained oblivious as to why the child treated him harshly, and only wound up upsetting him more by comparing his face to a tomato when he was angered (due to it being red and chubby).

Spain also found that pulling Romano's haircurl would garner a violent reaction, though Romano secretly enjoyed it, finding that it "felt nice". But after France told Romano about "teasing play", Romano became disturbed by the hair-pulling and thought of Spain as a pervert.

When Spain proposed the idea of marriage to Chibitalia, Romano became noticeably upset at the idea of being left alone.

The War Years
After the unification of Italy (an event which has yet to be covered in the series), Romano had long since left Spain and went back to his homeland to live with his brother. However, he was shown to still be in contact with Spain by the time of the "Great Depression", when the two attended a meeting and blamed America for the rapidly-spreading financial crisis.

When both of the Italy brothers wound up kidnapped by England during the Spanish Civil War, Romano attempted to call Spain to bail them out of the situation, though he was unable to rescue them (due to his boss ordering him to make hundreds of roses).

Due to the high cost of the war, both wound up having to spend a lot of money. As a result, Spain wound in debt by the start of WWII, and refused to get involved.

Modern Life
As Romano grew into an adult he continued to be close to Spain, and is rarely seen spending time with other characters. Whenever he gets in trouble he calls Spain for help, like the time he was captured by England in WW2, or when he ran out of pasta and refused to accept anyone's food but Spain's (only to receive Spain's 'cheer-up charm' instead of pasta in the end).

When Spain became ill due to his poor economy and was near-death, Romano attempted to go out on a quest to help cure him, even going as far as fighting the mafia directly (who he feared and always ebeyed) and trying to buy more imports form Spain (even though he was dealing with his own cold at the time). But by the time he returned, Spain had completely recovered due to his people adopting the euro as their currency.

After gay marriage became legalized in his country in 2005, Spain proposed to Romano, who answered that he wanted a minimum of three meals a day and a nap with pasta. Spain took the answer as a rejection, and felt depressed that nobody wanted to marry him (he had unsuccessfully tried to propose to the younger Italy brother as well, as he was trying to marry both of them).

At some other point in time, Spain had a dream in which both Italy brothers were his servants and Romano was warmer and nicer to him. But the dream quickly turned into a nightmare once his idealized version of Romano, in an attempt to wake him up (as he had done when he was a kid), jumped down on him and crushed his "vital regions". After suddenly waking up from his nightmare, Spain sees Romano waiting for him to wake up and make lunch, and comes to the conclusion that he prefers Romano as he is.

In another strip, Spain and Romano had to deal with an influx of turtles in Romano's home. Romano was dismayed and annoyed about the situation, but Spain was cheerful about the whole thing, asking Romano what names they should give to the turtles.

In a strip from volume four, Romano is shown reading a book about Spanish history and reading about how Spain spent all its money on SOuthern Italy in the past. Somewhat embarrassed upon having just discovered this fact, Romano tries to tell Spain something that could be interpreted as an attempt to say thank you, but only for Spain to answer that he used to spend his money without thinking in the past, but now he knows the importance of saving money. Of course this led to Romano becoming really annoyed, and Netherlands saying that "he was always like this" (referring to Spain's thick-headedness).

During the Halloween Event 2011, Spain called Romano cute several times despite his appearance and unsettling aura, and stated that "he's so cute I just can't help but want to protect him".

Also during the Christmas Event 2011, Spain was surprised to see Romano working hard for once, and even after being told by Romano that he didn't need to help, he decided to crouch behind him so that he didn't disturb him and used his 'cheer-up charm' with him, which only succeded in making Romano lose his patience.

Fan Speculations
Going by a line from part 2 of Boss Spain's Control Of Southern Italy, it is believed that part of the reason why Romano treats Spain so coldly is due to him fearing that Spain only wants him for his grandfather's inheritance, and that his childhood fears have possibly carried over into his adulthood.

Another speculation and long-held fanon belief is that Romano is a strong Catholic and tries to deny any strong feelings he may have for Spain, remaining "closeted" as homosexuality and/or bisexuality wouldn't be approved of by his people's religion. One other belief is that Romano considers Spain to have been the cause of most of his childhood grief, and therefore has a hard time showing that he cares.

Romano's inferiority complex is also believed to have carried over to his adulthood to some extent, with him being lonely and resenting the attention and popularity that his brother gets and the idea that his brother has someone to confide in (who he happens to hate).

It is also speculated that Romano has an abandonment complex, which may have stemmed from his grandfather having left him in his youth in favor of taking Veneziano to live with him, and later dying. Spain was shown to fantasize of having both brothers living with him under his roof on two occasions, and expressed interest in having the younger Veneziano eventually marry him, which Romano objected to (as he would be abandoned).

Alternatively, some believe that Romano does not hold any real affection for Spain and simply tries to lead him on, but fails due to Spain's oblivious nature. In this interpretation, his answer to the proposal is seen as sarcasm or Romano simply having wanted to manipulate Spain into thinking he actually cared. His motivation is seen as either revenge for having been under Spain's control, or that he tries to use Spain's personality flaws to his own advantage (though it doesn't work).

Due to his affections shown to both younger Italies and his fantasies, some speculate that Spain was a shotacon (or had the tendencies of one), though he would have been unaware of it due to his problem with "reading the atmosphere". Spain is either seen as the one who is unaware of Romano's true feelings, or the one who actually holds more affection but is unknowingly manipulated and lead around.

In 2008, Hetalia creator Hidekaz Himaruya assigned some characters names. Since then, they have not been utilized fully. They were brought up again in a 2011 blog post, in which he listed theoretical names for some characters suggested by fans. However, he later noted that they were not official, and that fans should feel free to create their own names for characters.

History and usage
Since their creation in 2008, the names have fallen out of use, and new characters do not receive definitive names.

Names
America
America received the name Alfred F. Jones (アルフレッド・F・ジョーンズ, Arufureddo F. Jōnzu). "Jones" is one of the most common surnames in the United States. His last name could also refer to the action movie hero Indiana Jones, as America once stated that one of his own hobbies is archaeology.

"Alfred F." is most probably an allusion to Alfred E. Neuman; the "F" in his middle name possibly inspired by John F. Kennedy, one of the most recognized presidents of the United States. To some fans the "F" would stand for freedom, considering that is one of his obsessions, however, according to Himaruya, his initial plans for the F were to stand for "Franklin", "Foster", or "Fuck". It is also possible that his name is a reference to the USS Alfred, the first ship to fly the Grand Union Flag. The man who hoisted the flag was John Paul Jones. Another likely reference would be Alfred Hitchcock, who is famous for his suspense films, which would explain America's video game and movie preference.

Australia
Himaruya listed Ralph, Christian, Kyle, and Jett to be potential names for Australia.

Austria
Austria received the name Roderich Edelstein (ローデリヒ・エーデルシュタイン, Rōderihi Eederushutain). The inspiration behind Austria's given name, Roderich, may have come from Roderich Mojsisovics von Mojsvár, an Austrian composer and opera writer. The name may also be a reference to "Republik Österreich", the local term for the Republic of Austria. Edelstein literally means "gemstone", and is a predominantly Jewish surname of Germanic origin.

The name appears to be half from the national flower of Austria (Edelweiss) and half from the glass or mug used for beer (Stein). For that matter "Edel" stands for "stainless/noble/pure," and is derived from the word "Adel" or "shield" as in coat-of-arms, which also alludes to an Austrian affinity for titles. While a conjugation of it to mean 'noble stone' might be possible it is not likely.

Belarus
Belarus received the name Natalia Arlovskaya (Natal'ya Arlovskaya). Her surname is often rendered and translated as Alfroskaya, but the more accurate spelling would be Arlovskaya, since Alfroskaya would be rendered as Arufurosukaya. Another version of the name is Arlofskaya. If read as Arlovskaya, the surname would correspond to Arlovski, like the Belarusian Andrei Arlovski. It is probable that he was not Himaruya's specific inspiration, though the other two surname spellings cannot be found outside of the fandom.

While her name is Natalia, Natasha is alternatively used for her as an informal variant of the girl's name and is also considered to be valid. Her first name may have also been intended to be spelled as Natalya.

Canada
Canada received the name Matthew Williams (マシュー・ウィリアムズ, Mashyū Uiriamuzu). There is no definite source for his first name, Matthew. Across Canada, Matthew has been a greatly popular name for newborns in recent decades, often in the top three most frequently given first names. Coincidentally or not, the caravel sailed by John Cabot from Bristol to North America in 1497 was named Matthew. John Cabot and his crew are thought to have reached somewhere in Newfoundland (which was not a province of Canada until 1949). 'Matthew' is also the name of a prominent character in 'Anne of Green Gables', a popular Canadian novel. In fanworks, his name is occasionally spelled Matthieu or Mathieu, acknowledging past and present French influence on Canada.

China
China received the name Wang Yao (王耀, Wanyao or Ouyou, 王耀, Wáng Yào). The Western order for his name is Yao Wang, while the Eastern order is Wang Yao. Wang is a common Chinese surname that means "king", while Yao is a common given name that means "brightly shining". A common rendering of his first name in fandom is Wong. Another alternate spelling of his name (that quickly fell out of use) was Wong Hwei. According to an old blog post by Himaruya, his name can be rendered in Japanese and in English as either Wang Yao or Wang Yue.

Cuba
Himaruya listed Máximo, (Juan), Ericemdo, and Carlos Machado as theoretical names for Cuba.

Denmark
Himaruya listed Andersen, Christensen, Arnesen, Simon Densen, Abel, Mikkel, Magnus, Bertram as theoretical names for Denmark, and Densen as a possible surname.

Egypt
Egypt received the name Gupta Muhammad Hassan (グプタ・モハメッド・ハッサン, Guputa Mohameddo Hassan; Arabic: غوبتا محمد حسن). Muhammad and Hassan are both common Arabic names; however, Gupta is actually an Indian surname as well as the name of an Indian empire (The Gupta Empire). Interestingly, there is no true 'p' sound in Arabic.

England
England received the name Arthur Kirkland (アーサー・カークランド, Āsā Kākurando). The name Arthur is likely to be a reference to Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes series, who was famed for his obsession with fairies. It could also refer to the legendary King Arthur. Before fans settled on the Kirkland rendering (which was more accurate from the katakana), some early fanworks referred to his last name as Clarkland.

Estonia
Estonia received the name Eduard von Bock (エドァルド・フォンヴォック Edoarudo fon Vokku). Both Eduard and the surname von Bock are actually of German origin, though Eduard is also a common name for Baltic, Slavic and Russian males.

Finland
Finland received the name Tino Väinämöinen (ティノ・ヴァイナマイネン, Tino Vainamainen). Though his name is rendered as Tino in katakana, some fans opt to use the more common Finnish name Timo when referring to him by his human name, as Tino is rarely used in Finland. His surname Väinämöinen seems to have been inspired by the Finnish folklore character of the same name, who was sometimes thought of as a deity as well.

France
France received the name Francis Bonnefoy (フランシス・ボヌフォア, Furanshisu Bonufoa). France's surname, Bonnefoy (alternate spelling: Bonne-Foi), means "good faith" in French, "foy" is an old-fashioned way to write "foi" (faith). His given name, Francis (which means "Frenchman"), is a common French name, though an alternative rendering in the language would be François.

When Hidekaz Himaruya originally listed the nations' human names, he noted that the original name he had in mind for France was Jean. The surname Epine was also considered.

Greece
Greece received the name Heracles Karpusi (ヘラクレス・カルプシ, Herakuresu Karupushi). The surname Karpusi is not in fact a real name, but the Greek word for watermelon. His given name Heracles is thought to have been inspired by the Greek demigod of the same name. Although Heracles Karpusi is the most commonly accepted spelling of his name, the alternate rendering of Herakles Karpossi can sometimes be seen in fan translations, with his surname sometimes being rendered as Karpsh or Carpus.

Germany
Germany received the name, Ludwig (ルートヴィッヒ, Rūtovihhi). He is notable for being the only character with a human name who was not given a surname. Hidekaz Himaruya, in his original listing of the names, stated that there was a reason he did so and that fans would eventually find out. As the human names and most references to them were later discarded, it appears that this is moot. However, the name Ludwig used to be a very common name that happens to have been shared by various German historical figures, most notably Ludwig II of Bavaria and Ludwig Van Beethoven.

Hong Kong
Himaruya listed Wang Jia Long (Wong Kha Loung in Cantonese), Li Xiao Chun (Lei Siu Chun in Cantonese), and Leon as potential names for Hong Kong.

Hungary
Hungary received the name Elizabeta Héderváry (エリザベータ・ヘーデルヴァーリ, Erizabēta Hēderuvāri). Her first name (Erizabeeta), due to not being rendered in romaji, is often a subject of debate as to how it should be spelled. Elizabeta is the most accurate spelling of her name according to the characters, though some fan sources use Elizaveta, as well as Elisabeth and Elizabeth (although the actual Hungarian equivalent of Elizabeth would be Erzsébet). Using the spelling of Elisabeth could be an allusion to Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, who was the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary. She was married to Austrian Emperor Franz Josef, who is mentioned in the anime briefly.

Iceland
Himaruya listed Emil Steilsson, Sigurður, Eiríkur, and Egill as potential names for Iceland.

Italy
Italy received the name Feliciano Vargas (フェリチアーノ・ヴァルガス Ferichiāno Varugasu). The exact inspiration behind his human name was not stated by Hidekaz Himaruya, though it is to be noted that Vargas is a Spanish surname and not Italian (though it has Latin roots, like both languages) but it is believed that Vargas may have been derived from the artist Alberto Vargas, who was famous for his WWII "Vargas Girls" pin-up art. Likewise, Feliciano (which comes from "felice", happy one) is an uncommon given name in Italy, and is more common as a surname. It is possible that it might have been inspired by the Italian calligrapher Felice Feliciano.

Japan
Japan received the name, Honda Kiku (本田菊). The Western order for his name would be Kiku Honda, with the Eastern being Honda Kiku.

Kiku comes from the Japanese word for the Chrysanthemum flower, which is also the family crest of the Japanese Imperial family. Honda is a common Japanese surname that includes the kanji 本 hon, as in 日本 Nihon (Japan).

Latvia
Latvia received the name Raivis Galante (ライヴィス・ガランテ Raivisu Garante). While Raivis is an actual Latvian name, his surname Galante is actually of Italian origin. Whether it is intentional or not, Latvia's human last name corresponds with that of the well-known opera singer Inessa Galante, who happens to be from Latvia herself.

Liechtenstein
Himaruya listed Liechtenstein's potential names as Erika, Sisia, Elise, and Eva, with Vogel as possible surname.

Lithuania
Lithuania received the name Toris Laurinaitis (トーリス・ロリナイティス Tōrisu Rorinaitisu). While his human name is usually rendered as Toris or Tolys, other spellings such as Taurys and Thoris have been used in both the Japanese and international fandoms. Toris is often the most popular rendering of his given name, though Tolys exists as an uncommon Lithuanian name. The Laurinaitis spelling for his surname is also in existence (as opposed to the non-existent "Lorinaitis" often used by fandom), though Thoris is also a surname. It seems the inspiration behind the entire human name remains a mystery.

Netherlands
Himaruya listed potential names for Netherlands as Tim, Govert, Abel, and Morgens.

Norway
Himaruya listed Lukas Bondevik, Børre Thomassen, Bjørn, Kjetil, Knut, and Sigurd as potential names for Norway, with Bondevik and Thomassen as potential surnames.

Poland
Poland received the name, Feliks Łukasiewicz (フェリクス・ウカシェヴィチ, Ferikusu Ukashevichi). The exact inspiration behind his human name is unknown, but it is believed that Hidekaz Himaruya may have had either Jan Łukasiewicz (a philosopher) or Ignacy Łukasiewicz (a scientist) in mind. The name Feliks is spelled as so because the letter "x" does not exist in the Polish language. It is not common in Poland today but was a popular name among the Polish elite in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His surname is pronounced Wook-a-shye-veech in Polish.

Prussia
Prussia received the name Gilbert Beilschmidt (ギルベルト・バイルシュミット, Giruberuto Bairushumitto). His surname was also often rendered as Weillschmidt, though it has fallen somewhat out of use as it doesn't exist as a German surname, while Beilschmidt does. Beilschmidt also means "axe smith" and there is speculation that the jumper Rolf Beilschmidt may have been inspiration.

Russia
Russia received the name Ivan Braginski (イヴァン・ブラギンスキ, Ivan Buraginsuki, Russian: Иван Брагинский). His given name is believed to have come from Ivan the Terrible or, equally as likely, Ivan The Great. Ivan happens to have been a common name for Russian czars (there were six Czar Ivans, including two Romanov Ivans), as well as being a common name for Russian males ("Ivan" is the Russian equivalent of "John"). Ivan has frequently been used as a stereotypical slang name for a Russian male. It is pronounced 'EEVAHN', not 'EYE-VAN', in Russian (with emphasis on the second syllable). The Russian diminutive of Ivan is Vanya, and is frequently used in fanworks.

His last name is actually somewhat politically incorrect; traditionally the '-ski' suffix indicates Polish ancestry, while '-sky' is used for Russians instead, and specifically Russians with far-reaching familial roots in Poland.

Sealand
Sealand received the name Peter Kirkland (ピーター・カークランド, Pītā Kākurando). While the exact origin of his human name is unknown, Peter means "rock" and could possibly be a reference to the fact that the actual Sealand is simply a "rock" itself, or more accurately, a small concrete military fort. Another common assumption is that his name is referencing Peter Pan, due to his inability to grow up.

South Italy
South Italy received the name Lovino Vargas (ロヴィーノ・ヴァルガス, Rovīno Varugasu). Though the exact inspiration behind his human name remains unknown, Lovino is not a given name in Italian, instead used as a surname; in Italian, it simply translates to "the wine". However, it may be a masculinized form of "Lovina" which comes from the name "Lavinia" which was the name of the legendary mother of the Roman people. Vargas is a common Spanish surname but in this case it's believed to have come from the artist Alberto Vargas. Alternatively, Rovino exists as an Italian word, and derives from a tense of the word "rovinare", which means to "collapse" or to "wreck", thus the name literally means "I ruin". He is also known as "Romano" which he is called in the anime. "Romano is the Italian form of the name "Romanus" which means "Roman".

South Korea
Korea received the name Im Yong Soo (任勇洙, Imu Yon Su; Korean: 임용수). The Western ordering of his name would be Yong Soo Im, while the Eastern ordering is Im Yong Soo.

Though the correct Korean rendering would be Im Yong Soo, the variants Im Yonsu, Im Yong Su, and Im Yun Soo have been seen in some Japanese fanworks. Some spellings of his human name included Ren Yong Soo, Lim Young-soo, and Lee Young-soo (derived from how the name is spelled out in katakana). The full human name Im Yong Soo means "brave and great" in Korean.

Spain
Spain received the name Antonio Fernández Carriedo (アントーニョ・フェルナンデス・カリエド, Antōnyo Ferunandesu Kariedo), though it may have been originally spelled Antonio Hernández Carriedo (アントーニョ・ヘルナンデス・カリエド, Antōnyo Herunandesu Kariedo, see "Name" section for details). There is debate over whether his first surname is Fernández or Hernández, due to possible mistranslations. When Himaruya first gave him a human name, the katakana resembled the characters for the latter more (ヘルナンデス, Herunandesu, though the real spelling should actually be エルナンデス, "Erunandesu", due to the Spanish 'h' being mute), though it later appeared with the kana for Fernández (フェルナンデス, Ferunandesu) and became Romanized as such.

There is a noticeable debate over which spelling is the correct one in both the Western and Eastern fandom, though both fandoms tend to use Fernández more often. The slight difference becomes more apparent as Fernández is a patronimic that comes from the first name "Fernando" like Ferdinand II Of Aragon, and Hernández comes from "Hernán", like the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés . Both are common surnames in Spain.

Sweden
Sweden received the name Berwald Oxenstierna (ベールヴァルド・オキセンスシェルナ Bēruvarudo Okisensusheruna). It is assumed that his surname, Oxenstierna, came from the Swedish statesman Axel Oxenstierna (Oxenstjärna), and that his given name Berwald came from Franz Berwald, a Swedish Romantic composer, for whom Berwaldhallen in Stockholm is named after. Berwaldhallen also happens to be near Oxenstiernsgatan (Oxenstjärnsgatan).

Switzerland
Switzerland received the name Basch Zwingli (バッシュ・ツヴィンクリ, Basshu Tsuvinkuri). An alternate name is Vash Zwingli. However, the kana for Switzerland's human name uses "バ" (ba). In German, a "v" sounds close to an English "f", making Basch a more appropriate Romanization. Additionally, the character Basch from Final Fantasy XII shares the same katakana. Early Japanese fanworks rendered his name in English as Bache Zwingli. Though proponents of the alternate "Vash" spelling theorize that it could be descended from the French word vache, meaning cow. As Switzerland is known for its domestic dairy industries and products, and French being one of its official languages, some believe in this spelling having basis. His human surname is believed to have been inspired by Huldrych Zwingli, the leader of the Swiss Protestant reformation.

Taiwan
Himaruya listed Lin Yi Ling or Xiao Mei to be potential names for Taiwan.

Turkey
Turkey received the name Sadık Adnan (サディク・アドナン, Sadiku Adonan). Adnan is an Arabic male name and generally used by Muslims, and comes from Adnan, the ancestor of the Adnani Arabs. Sadık (meaning "loyal") is usually used as an Arabic surname, rather than a given name. Sadiq is an alternate version of his name, although this is less accurate as the Turkish alphabet does not contain the letter "q" and since the name sounds a bit deep, its used with the letter "ı".

Ukraine
Himaruya listed Irunya Chernenko, Maria, and Sofia as potential names for Ukraine. Irunya, however, is a petname of sorts, and her name would more accurately be Irina, Iryna being the Ukrainian variant.
In 2008, Himaruya gave human names to some of the characters, and he received the name Antonio Fernández Carriedo (アントーニョ・フェルナンデス・カリエド, Antōnyo Ferunandesu Kariedo), though it may have been originally spelled Antonio Hernández Carriedo (アントーニョ・ヘルナンデス・カリエド, Antōnyo Herunandesu Kariedo, see "Name" section for details).

Appearance
He has somewhat curly brown hair, green eyes, lightly tanned skin, and wears a khaki-colored uniform with his sleeves rolled up to his elbow. He is often depicted with his favorite food, tomatoes. In the profile image at the right, he is wearing a bullfighter uniform (from the Children's Day sketch series).

Spain's skintone has alternated between fair and olive. He's said to always look happy, even without reason.

Personality and Interests
A cheerful country bumpkin, Spain was once a super powerful nation and traveler until he was tormented by England and Netherlands, beaten by a younger America, and thrown into war and poverty. Despite all his hardships, he remained optimistic and passionate. The source of his constant happiness is the sunshine that casts over his land.

Although he means well, he happens to come off as insensitive and clueless at times because of his inability to "read the atmosphere" (it is said that he does not even try to assess the situation). Spain speaks in the Osaka-ben variant of the Kansai dialect in the Japanese version of the manga and anime.

He is also very fond of children, especially the Italy brothers. It is shown that his ultimate dream is for both of them to live with him.

Spain is often shown spending time with either Romano, France, Prussia, Belgium and Netherlands.

It has also been stated that he tends to get sentimental if he drinks, but when he gets completely drunk he "becomes so scary he can even change Sweden's facial expression".

He was conquered by Austria before the Italian Wars. The two were married within the union of the other countries in the House of Hapsburg.

The two remained in close contact as allies until the War of the Spanish Succession. Spain would later ally himself with France and Prussia in the War of the Austrian Succession.

Belgium and Netherlands became a member of Spain's household when the Burgundian-Hapsburgs acquired the crown of Spain. Although Netherlands does not seem to get along well with Spain at all, Belgium seems to. In the Boss CD, Spain helps Belgium with laundry and with Romano. They enjoyed friendly meals together, as well, including the churros that he and Romano made together.

The Christmas 2007 Event revealed that when her brother left to become independent she not only stayed with Spain but also fought along side him.

In the 2010 Christmas Event she is attacked by Parallel Spain and stops him by giving him her scarf. He falls in love with her, although she doesn't seem to notice he looks exactly like Spain.

France
Main Article: France

The two get along rather well, having grown up and fought in wars together, though Spain remains oblivious to France's more perverted tendencies and cannot see why Romano hates him. It is said in production notes by Himaruya that their relationship is actually undesirable, yet the two remain inseparable. Recently, it seems Spain is aware that France is a bad influence on him, calling him "despicable" before defeating him in The Battle of Garigliano with the help of his pet bull. France's first bird named Pierre is used for communication with him.

Netherlands
Main Article: Netherlands

Netherlands was a member of Spain's household for some time. Their relationship became very difficult up till the point where Spain believed Netherlands hated him. Eventually he left and later beat Spain up to be recognized as an independent country.

In the 2010 Christmas Event they are seen together during Christmas. Netherlands perpetually tells Spain to go home. When the strange figure approached Netherlands, he appeared to be defending Spain. Finally when he got held down by the figure, Spain attempts to help free Netherlands. By the end of the event, a half-naked, sleeping Spain is on top of Netherlands, and his only comment was, "What the hell? This sucks."

South Italy (Romano)
Main Article: South Italy

Spain is rather affectionate to Romano (this affection being described as somewhat abnormal in character notes), having raised him from the time he was a child and under his rule. As a result, Romano takes after him in his culture and customs, and both share a deep love for tomatoes.

After defeating France in the 'Batalla del Garellano', Spain took control over South Italy and made him his henchman (since he was the self-proclaimed 'boss' of his colonies). In the years of having raised him, Spain often had difficulty trying to get Romano to do chores and when he did, he often ended up breaking things, making him wish that he could have acquired North Italy instead, due to the younger brother's obedience and "cuteness". After Spain's attempt to trade him for his younger brother, Spain couldn't help feeling guilty and often spoiled Romano in an attempt to make Romano like him more and be more obedient, but with few results.

Even though he found Romano's frequent bed-wetting and harsh attitude to be annoying, Spain remained affectionate to him, and was determined to save him when he was captured by Turkey and from France's frequent attempts to take Romano from him. Even though their kingdom wound up thrown into debt due to all the money spent on South Italy's protection, Spain refused to let go of him since he was 'special' to him, even after being scolded several times by his boss. Seeing this made Romano realise how much Spain truly cared for him, and after (very shyly) thanking his caretaker for rescuing him, Spain changed his view on him as well, saying he 'also had a cute side after all' and that 'it would be so cute if he was so honest all the time'. After that their relationship improved a bit, but Romano also grew more jealous around Spain. In one strip, Romano tried to attack a German soldier who was talking to Spain, mistaking him for an enemy, which Spain mad at him for being rude to a visitor. Known by his inability to read the mood, Spain didn't know about Romano's true intentions until he asked him directly, which frustrated Romano to no end.
Romano's tendency to blush and turn completely red whenever he was embarrassed or angry as a kid often made Spain comment on how much he looked like a tomato. Unaware of its effects on Romano, Spain also had the habit of pulling on and twirling Romano's curl, causing Romano to headbutt him and call him a pervert.

At one point Spain spent all his money on buying Chibi-Romano new clothes, while he himself was dressed in rags. Then in the same strip we're shown Romano (adult) reading a Spanish history book in the present, about how Spain spent lots of money in South Italy back at the time. However, while Romano is trying to say something that could be interpreted as an attempt to say thank you, in the end Spain doesn't get what Romano wants to say and says that 'he used to spend all his money without thinking in the past, but now he knows the importance of saving money'. This results in a very annoyed Romano, and the Netherlands stating that "he was always like this".

As Romano grew into an adult he continued to be close to Spain, and is rarely seen spending time with any other characters besides Spain and his own brother (and sometimes Belgium). Spain is one of the few characters to be on good terms with Romano, as they often appear spending time together. Whenever he gets in trouble he calls Spain for help, like the time he was captured by England in WW2, or when he ran out of pasta and he refused to accept anyone's food but Spain's. Even though he retains his harsh attitude throughout the series, in one strip he tried to save Spain from dying from a severe cold (caused by the great economic difficulties Spain was going through), and went as far as fighting the mafia (which he fears and always obeys) and trying to buy more imports from Spain, even though he was still dealing with his own cold (for economic reasons as well). During the Halloween Event 2011, Spain called Romano cute several times despite his appearance and unsettling aura, and stated that "he's so cute I just can't help but want to protect him".
Trivia
*According to a note by Hidekaz Himaruya, Spain was only originally going to speak in the Kansai dialect whenever he was excited or around people that were close to him. In addition, Himaruya also revealed that Spain might as well have "two faces" like Russia. He also stated in another note that while Spain treated Romano kindly, he was stern to his other colonies. Himaruya himself wondered why Spain was "historically stuck on Italy" that much, as it was stuck spending so much money to protect it and struggled to try to get it back after losing it in the War of the Spanish Succession.

*Himaruya stated that Spain was also based off a friend of his, which inspired him to give him the Kansai dialect. In addition, it is said that all of the Spanish-language nations will speak in some variant of Kansai. Though Belgium is not one of them, she speaks in the Shiga-ben variant, presumably since she used to be one of Spain's territories.

*A separate character for Castile was originally planned as Spain's older sister, but it is speculated that Himaruya may have forgotten about this idea, as he later drew a child version of Spain that seemed to hint at the Reconquista. Fans speculate that the younger Spain may have represented Castile, or alternatively Aragon (in the case of Castile being a separate character). It originally seemed more likely that he represented Castile due to the above sketch, as well as the Castilian culture being the dominant culture of Spain. In the original webcomic, his boss was also shown to be Joanna of Castile in the Boss Spain strips. However, in volume 3, Spain was used to represent the Crown of Aragon, throwing doubt on to this theory. In most fanfiction, he is used to represent the entirety of Hispania, especially during its days as a Roman province.

It has also been stated in various blog posts by the author that he tends to get sentimental if he drinks, but when he gets completely drunk he "becomes so scary he can even change Sweden's facial expression".

France
The two get along rather well, having grown up and fought in wars together, though Spain remains oblivious to France's more perverted tendencies and cannot see why Romano hates him. It is said in production notes by Himaruya that their relationship is actually undesirable, yet the two remain inseparable. Recently, it seems Spain is aware that France is a bad influence on him, calling him "despicable" before defeating him in The Battle of Garigliano with the help of his pet bull. France's first bird named Pierre is used for communication with him.
Netherlands

Anime
Spain cameos in Episode 01 at the world meeting, asking Russia if he is going to say something to stop the quarreling that is going on. He then makes his official appearance as a young Spain appearing in the Chibitalia segments offering Italy churros in Episode 02, but later in the episode is shown to be one of the other children that bullies the Italy brothers.

Episodes 60-62, Episode 68, and Episode 75-77 adapt Boss Spain's Control of Southern Italy. This shows the time from when Spain firsts acquires Romano to where he begins fighting France and Turkey for Romano.
